Miscellaneous Information.

Appointments as Constables. Skinner, John William, No. 874. Tonkinson, Charles Walter, No. 875. Services Dispensed with. Constable Woodbury, Frederick, No. 841. Rewards. Constable J. J. Cassells, No. 697, Christchurch police, has been awarded £1 10s. from the Reward Fund for energy and ability displayed in arresting George Hawkins, alias William Wilson, convicted of indecent exposure and sentenced to twelve months’ labour. (98/1953.) Constable J. Andrew, No. 693, Christchurch police, has been awarded £1 from the Reward Fund for special services rendered in the arrest and conviction of Thomas Sutton for breaking and entering. (98/2067.)

(Circular No. 27/98.) Pay. Consequent on the abolition of classes and the adoption of the increment system in lieu thereof, the following scale will take effect as from the Ist December, 1898 : Inspectors. To commence at £3OO per annum, and advance to £4OO by increments of £25 every three years. Sub-Inspectors. To commence at £250, and advance to £2BO by increments of £lO every three years. Sergeants-Major. To receive their present rate of pay—viz., 11s. 6d. per diem. Sergeants. All men at present holding this rank, who have not been retarded for misconduct while in the rank, will, if under three years a sergeant, receive 9s. 6d. per diem ; those over three years and under six years, ,10s. per diem ; over six years and under nine years, 10s. 6d. per diem ; and over nine years, 11s. per diem.

Constables. The rate of £lO per month is abolished, and, if not retarded for misconduct, constables will be paid as follows : Those under five years’ service, 7s. per diem ; over five years’ and under ten years’ service, 7s. 6d. per diem ; over ten years’ and under fifteen years’ service, Bs. per diem; over fifteen years’ and under twenty years’ service, Bs. 6d. per diem ; and over twenty years’ service, 9s. per diem.

Detectives. All men at present holding this rank who have not been retarded for misconduct while in the rank will, if under three years a detective, receive 9s. 6d. per diem; those over three years and under six years, 10s. 6d. per diem; over six years and under nine years, 11s. 6d. per diem; over nine years and under twelve years, 12s. 6d. per diem ; over twelve years and under fifteen years, 13s. 6d. per diem; and over fifteen years, 14s. 6d. per diem.

General. Long-service pay will no longer appear in the acquittance rolls.

Sergeants, constables, and detectives who, prior to the Ist December instant, were in receipt of pay (inclusive of Is. per diem for long service) in excess of the amount their services entitle them to under the new scale will continue to receive the old rate, and an explanatory note—“ Rate prior to abolition of classes ” —must be placed opposite their names in the column for “ Remarks ” on the acquittance rolls until they attain sufficient service to enable such explanation to be dispensed with. A supply of acquittance rolls (revised form) will be forwarded at an early date, and the various ranks and names are to be entered in the same order as they appear in the following list. Training Depot. The following rules are to be observed at the Mount Cook Depot:— P ro^ ati p ners will be provided with free lodgings at Mount Cook Station, but will have to provide their own sheets pillow-cases, towels, boot-brushes, &c. 2. They will be provided with food from the station-mess of which they will be members, and will each pay his share of the messing expenses. 3. All probationers must be in station by 10 p.m., except under special circumstances, when, on application to the sergeant in charge of station, leave may, at the sergeant's discretion, be granted till 11.30 p.m. The roll will be called

by the sergeant at .10 p.m., and all men absent without leave will be reported to the Inspector of the district. At 10.30 p.m. all men not on duty or on leave will retire for the night, and lights extinguished. 4. No man will absent himself from the depot without leave from the Inspector until 6 p.m., after the work of the day is finished, and then only on receiving the permission of the sergeant in charge. 5. The sergeant in charge is responsible that the strictest order and regularity i 3 maintained at the depot, and that the utmost cleanliness prevails. 6. During summer (from Ist October to 31st March) all probationers not performing night duty will rise not later than 6 a.m., and in winter 7 a.m., daily (except Sunday, when they will rise not later than 7.30 a.m.), and parade for drill half an hour later. They will have at least one hour’s drill before breakfast. 7. The bedding must be neatly folded and bedrooms prepared for inspection by 10 a.m. 8. The hours for meals will be arranged by the Inspector of the district so that as many men as possible belonging to the mess may sit down together. All men when sitting down to meals must be neatly and properly attired. 9. During the first month’s probation the curriculum will be : Instruction in simple foot - drill, not less than three hours daily, and the study under the Sergeant Instructor of the police regulations and the numerous Acts of Parliament, by-laws, &c., which bear on police work. Each probationer will be supplied with a copy of the regulations, statutes, &c., for his own private study, and in addition the Sergeant Instructor will explain the regulations and statutes, and will give lectures on practical police work, preparation of reports, &c. After the first month, in addition to the above, the probationers will attend the Magistrate’s Court during the hearing of the police cases, and will each patrol with a constable on beat at least four hours out of each twentyfour hours. 10. The Inspector of the district will arrange the hours for the classes, lectures, drill-parades, &c., but care must be taken that the men are kept fully employed throughout the whole day. 11. In addition to the foregoing the police regulations relating to barracks, so far as applicable to the Training Depot, are to be observed. 12. Any probationer acting in disobedience of the foregoing regulations, or in any other way misconducting himself, will be liable to instant dismissal. J, B. Tunbridge, Commissioner of Police.
