Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person, &c.

Auckland. William Thrner, contractor, Mercury Bay, reports stolen from him in Grey Street, Auckland, on the 17th ultimo, two cheques drawn on the Bank of New Zealand by the Kauri Timber Company (Limited), one for £5, the other for £9, both in favour of complainant; £4 in gold, about £1 in silver, one £5 note, seven £1 notes; a purse containing two receipts from the Ponsonby Orphans’ Home; and a silver lever hunting-watch, makers Stewart Dawson and Go., value £5 ss. Suspicion attached'to Lizzie Black, a prostitute, well known to the Auckland police. [Note. —This is inserted in lieu of the notice in page 114 of last Gazette, wherein complainant’s name was erroneously tated as William Murphy.]

Auckland.— Eliza Kino (Maori), Great Barrier Island, reports stolen, on the 17th ultimo, an English silver lever hunting-watch, No. 290532, maker unknown ; a gentlemen’s gold chain, wide links; a wedding-ring, a dress-ring, two gold-plated bracelets set with greenstone, and a greenstone ear-ring ; value, in all, £l6. Suspicion attached to a man, name unkown, who was employed as a labourer by complainant, and left suddenly for Auckland on the above date. Description : About twenty years of age, 5 ft. 5 in. or 6 in. high, dark hair, curly in front, small moustache only, figures of two women tattooed on the inside of left arm ; wore a dark suit, and hard hat.

Auckland. —Joseph Weston, labourer, reports stolen from him, at the Clarendon Hotel, on the 21st ultimo, an English silver lever hunting-watch, No. 92742 or 92142, maker’s name not known, value £7 ; and a silver chain, value 10s.

Auckland. —James Coster, chemist, Waihi, reports stolen from him in Queen Street, Auckland, on the 24th ultimo, a gold rosette scarf-pin, set with seven small diamonds ; value, £7.

Thomas Longhurse, pensioner, McElwain Terrace, Grey Street, reports stolen from him, on the 20th ultimo, a silver lever hunting-watch, maker Abbott, Largeson, Tasmania, number unknown, “ Thomas Longhurse ” and “ C.K.” engraved on the inside of front case; and a hair guard with silver-mounted greenstonependant, on which a masonic emblem is engraved. Suspicion attached to a girl, name unknown, about eighteen years of age, 5 ft. 2 in. or 3in. high, fair complexion, slight build; wore dark clothes. Can be identified.

Papakura. — John Sutton, platelayer, Drury, reports l dfsl&*ipctyn his dwelling, about the 15th ultimo, an English /GjlvJrCever double-cased hunting-watch, No. (supposed) 358, inam’s name unknown, jewelled in four holes, small dent V'--, on back of case; with a silver chain, old twist pattern, at- ( tached : value, £5. Suspicion attached to Edward Harris, a labourer, about fifty years of age, about 5 ft. 10 in. high, stout build, grey hair whiskers and moustache, shaved on chin, fair complexion, well educated. He is supposed to have gone to Hamilton or Pukekohe.

Woodville. —Jases Malkin, alias Malcolm, alias Woods, is charged on wafr&nt with having, between 8.30 p.m. on the 22nd aiidi.7 a,M.-ion the 23rd ultimo, burglariously entered the 'of Tffomas Alexander Jamieson Nicholson, 1 m(4i2>

chemist, and stolen therefrom about 7S. in silver. Offender is also wanted for breaking into and stealing from the shop of John Brown, watchmaker, Manners Street, Wellington. (See Police Gazette, 1897, pages 107, 111, and 115.)

Nelson. —Timothy Devine, licensee Globe Hotel, reports stolen from his bedroom, on the 22nd ultimo, a cash-box, containing about seventy £1 notes, £l4 in gold, and £l2; in silver; and a child’s money-box, containing about £3 in notes, some silver, small gold-hoop earrings, and silver finger-rings; value, in all, about £IOO. Suspicion is attached to a man who called at the hotel on the above date, and gave his name as Dixon. Description : Supposed colonial, about thirty-five years of age, 5 ft. 5 in. high, fair hair and complexion, round features, fair moustache only ;. wore a light-striped coat and hard black hat. He went to Westport by the s.s. “Charles Edward.’’

Oamaru. —John Liddle, alias Keeling, alias Hobart Towu Jack, is charged on warrant with havingLm flie 23rd ultimo, stolen from a tent at Tokpsahi the .nipper ty of Adam Dennison. Dunedin.— Frederick Watkins, ploughman, reports stolen from him while under the influence of liquor, on the 21st ultimo, an old silver lever hunting-watch, No. 6059, maker J. D. Williams, “ Simon Watkins, Merthyr-Tydvil,” engraved on inside of case, old brass chain, curb pattern, attached; value, £3. It was snatched from him by a young man of whom no description can be given except that he is tall and thin, and dressed in a dark coat and very light trousers. Complainant’s address is, care of Messrs. Ross and Glendinning, runholders, Barewood.

Dunedin. Angus Cameron, marine superintendent, Union Steamship Company, reports stolen from his dwelling, on the 13th ultimo, a red Russian-leather bag-purse, containing three £1 notes, two half-sovereigns, an old unmounted cameo, and an old valueless cheque drawn by complainant on the Colonial Bank of New Zealand, Dunedin, in favour of Mrs. Cameron : value, in all, £4 2s.
