Napier. —John Andrew is charged with having, on the 22nd May, 1896, obtained the sum of £6O from Stubbs, Paterson, and Co., commission agents, by false representations. Description: Scotch, a cattle-dealer, between fiftyfive and sixty years of age, about sft. 9in. high, stout build, florid complexion, fair hair turning grey, clean shaved, one /eye has a slight cast in it and is bloodshot; has a slight halt in one leg, and is slow in motion. Accused borrowed the amount by falsely representing that he had purchased a lot of cattle, and that they were grazing at Patoka, at the same time giving a bill of sale as security. He spoke of going to Oamaru. Warrant issued on the information of Robert Lamb Paterson.

Foxton. —Michael Welsh, charged with assaulting John Rainbow Stansell, has been arrested by Constable P. Minogue, Palmerston North police.

Wellington.— Benjamin Saville is charged on warrant with the theft, on the 19th January, 1897, of £59, money of William Smallwood, plumber, Manners Street. Offender is English, thirty-six to thirty-eight years of age, about sft. 6in.

high, stoutish build, fair fresh complexion, round features, light-brown hair, clean shaved, said to have prominent teeth ; dressed in a grey-tweed suit, hard drab-felt hat, and waterproof coat with cape. Supposed to have a brown-leather portmanteau with him. He was a contractor for erecting some buildings, and received the above amount for payment to complainant, to whom he let a sub-contract, but failed to pay it to him. His father lives at Stratford.

Wellington. —John McKenzie, alias William Ernest John McKenzie, alias Morrison, alias Williams, is charged on warrant with the theft, at Johnsonville, on the 21st ultimo, of 12s. 6d., money of Frank Hurd, labourer, Kilbirnie. Description: A native of New South Wales, a spieler, twenty-six years of age, sft. 6Ain. high, dark blotchy complexion, clean shaved, dark-brown hair, blue eyes, thick nose, scars on left hand and on left side of head; dressed in a dark sac-suit, and hard black-felt hat. Photographed at Wellington on the 7th August, 1891. (See Police Gazette, 1896, page 204.) Offender, in company with a man named Arthur Poulson, was laying totalisator odds, and complainant gave them 12s. 6d. on a horse that won, but after the race accused could not be found. Poulson has been arrested and sentenced to one month’s labour.

Christchurch. —William White, coal and timber merchant, reports that between 6 p.m. on the 26th and 6 a.m. on the 27th ultimo his horse, value £2O, was maliciously stabbed in the neck and killed while running in a paddock.

Oamaru. Michael Hannon is charged with disobeying the terms of his release under the First Offenders’ Probation Act. Description: A native of New Zealand, a labourer, nineteen years of age, sft. Bfin. high, slight build, swarthy sunburnt complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, long nose, small mouth and features, small blue dot on right wrist, several warts on each hand; dressed in a faded, brown suit, and soft black-felt hat; slovenly appearance. He was convicted at the Supreme Court, Oamaru, on the 15th September, 1896, of theft from a dwelling, sentenced to six months’ probation, and ordered to pay £3 in monthly instalments of 10s. towards the costs of prosecution. He carried out the conditions for the first two months, but has since ignored them, and left the district without informing the probation officer. His arrest is therefore requested.

Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person, &c

Thames. —William Ross, miner, reports stolen from a whare at Pupi, on the 23rd ultimo, a silver lever huntingwatch, No. 204797, maker W. Finlay, Thames; and a silver chain, link pattern, with silver Maltese cross medal attached: value, £4 18s. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, who slept in the whare. Description: sft. 6in. or 7in. high, medium build, dark hair, dark whiskers cropped short, heavy moustache; dressed in a blue-serge coat, grey-tweed vest, black shirt, slate-coloured moleskin pants, and dark slouched hat; carried a gum-spear attached to a spade-handle. He went towards Coromandel.

Auckland. —Richard Alfred Moore, miner, reports stolen from him, in the dwelling of Charles Diez, barber, Upper Queen Street, on the 16ih or 17th ultimo, au English silver lever hunting-watch, maker Bevan, Birkenhead, No. 4495 ; and a gold albert, curb pattern ; value, £l7.

Hawera. —Martin Lee, platelayer, Eltham, reports stolen from a bedroom in the Hawera Hotel, on the 16th ultimo, a silver lever double-cased hunting-watch, maker N. J. Rein, Invercargill, No. 180495, “ Martin Lee ” engraved inside; and an American-gold chain, cable pattern ; value, £3 ss.

Wellington. —John Halford, actor, reports stolen from a bedroom at Bodley’s Private Hotel, on the 15th ultimo, a brown-leather brief-bag with plated fittings, containing a Bengal razor, nearly new, in black case ; an old shavingbrush with white-bone handle ; scenic artist’s brushes; dry colours in bottles and tins; a brown-leather pocketbook ; a new meerschaum pipe with straight fiat stem ; and an old one with broken curved stem : value, £4.

Wellington. —Reihana Tifcore, Lower Taueru, Masterfcon, reports stolen from the Thistle Inn, Wellington, on the 16th ultimo, a brown - leather portmanteau with complainant’s name in black letters on one side, containing a white shirt, a quantity of women’s underclothing, and a brown woollen petticoat with a scalloped border of purple crochet; value, £2.

Carterton. John Conroy, alias Thomas Connelly, charged with the theft of Peter Peterson’s clothing, has been arrested by Constable J. Forster, Wellington Police, and remanded to Carterton. Stolen property not recovered.

Blenheim. —James Cassie, wagoner, Starborough Station, reports stolen from him, at Blenheim, on the 18th or 19th ultimo, a cheque for £4 7s. 6d. on the Union Bank of Australia, Blenheim, No. U. 8396, drawn by F. W. Foster in favour of G. Mortimer; three sovereigns, a £1 note, and about £1 in silver. Suspicion attached to a man who gave the name of P. Miller. Description : About thirty-five years of age, about sft. 4in. or sin. high, stout build, small moustache only, very dark complexion, has the appearance of a Maltese or half-caste Indian ; dressed in a light-tweed coat, and dark soft-felt hat. Complainant gave him a ride from Awatere to Blenheim. He was searched at Picton, but no money found on him.

Greymogth. —Charles O’Donnell, miner, reports stolen from him, on the 13th ultimo, six £2O notes on the Bank of New Zealand, numbers unknown.

Greymouth. Arthur Castles, ■ engine-cleaner, reports stolen from a bedroom in the Criterion Hotel, between the 31st December last and 13th ultimo, a gentleman’s plain gold ring, having H.S.C. engraved on shield, value £3 ; and a silver Waltham hunting-watch, No. 1419783, value £5. Suspicion attaches to spielers, some of whom left by the s.s. “ Mawhera ” for Wellington on the 9th ultimo.

Christchurch. —Stolen from a tent at Sumner, on the 10th ultimo, a gold Waltham hunting-watch, No. 4501602, to which was attached a black-braid guard having a gold band at each end and one in the centre, the latter engraved F.E.A. on one side and L.E.G. on the other, value £11; a silver match-box with monogram F.E.A. on side, value 10s. ; a £1 note, and 17s. 9d. : the property of Frederick Asquith, compositor, Cashel Street, Christchurch.” A silver Waltham hunting-watch, No. 4321970, A.W. in monogram and “ A. Walker ” on outside, and “ A. Walker, Lauriston, Canterbury,” inside, value £4 10s.; a 15-carat gold albert chain, curb pattern, with greenstone Maltese cross and

small metal match-box attached, value £lO : the property of Atha Walker, Lauriston. A ladies’ new silver Waltham Tiunting-watch, number unknown, value £2 10s. ; the property of Thomas George Ashman, warehouseman, Lichfield Street, Christchurch. And ss. in silver, the property of Frank Taylor, draper’s assistant, Cashel Street, Christchurch.

Christchurch. —Edward Foster, 174, Kilmore Street, reports stolen from a tent at New Brighton, between the 19th and 23rd ultimo, a nickel-plated open-faced watch, No. 700646, “ E. Foster ” scratched on inside of case, steel chain attached ; value, £1 ss.

Dunedin. —Thomas Snell, alias Baker, alias Stewart, charged with the theft of Ambrose William Wellsford’s bicycle (recovered), has been arrested by Constable T. Donovan, Coromandel police.

Dunedin. —Charles Smeaton, Leith Valley School, reports that, on the 16th ultimo, his dwelling was broken into, and the following stole«i; A gohfbjfcoch with crossbar, set with a brilliant iuvthe A diamond at each side, value £8 ; six hanikercfnrcpq marked N. L., value 6s. ; a pair of claret*goiOu/ed s/ippers, size 10 or 11, three or four soap stains on the upper of the left one, value Bs. 6d.; a brownflannel singlet, with three or four moth-holes in it, value 55.; a piece of a ladies’ gold guard, about 16in. long; and a piece of silver chain, about 4in., links much worn. Value of the latter two articles not stated.

Lawrence. —John A. Drury, labourer, Tuapeka West, reports stolen from a room in the Masonic Hotel, Lawrence, during the night of the 20th ultimo, a silver Waltham hunt-ing-watch, No. 2638403; and a steel chain, long links, with a threepenny-bit of the year 1837 attached: value, £4 10s. George Taylor, a spieler, who slept in the same room, is suspected. He resides at Gore, and is well known to the police there.
