Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person, &c.

Auckland. —William Cruickshank, ironmonger, Grafton Road, reports that during the night of the 27th ultimo his dwelling was broken into, and the following stolen: A silver Waltham hunting-watch, well-worn, number unknown ; an 18-carat gold chain, long and short links alternately ; and a round gold medal, engraved “W. Cruickshank, Hardware Handicap ” : total value, £lO.

Auckland. —Joseph O’Connor, labourer, care of Mr. Hellaby, slaughter-yards, Ponsonby, reports stolen from him at Auckland, or on the Ellerslie racecourse, on the 26th or 27th ultimo, an English silver lever hunting-watch, No. 52663, maker unknown, seconds-hand broken off ; value, £6.

Auckland. —Samuel McPherson, licensee, Anchor Hotel, reports stolen from him, on the 3rd instant, an English lever hunting-watch, maker and number unknown. “Presented to Samuel McPherson by Mr. L. Ehrenfried ” engraved inside ; and a gold chain, curb pattern : value, £l7.

Auckland. — William Ratcliffe, travelling agent for the South British Insurance Company, reports stolen from him, on the Bth instant, a gold lever open-faced watch, number unknown, W.R on back ; a gold albert chain, curb pattern ; a silver sovereign-case ; and a square gold locket containing hair: value, £Bl 10s. 6d.

Wairoa (Hawke’s Bay). —William James McDougall, Ruakituri, reports that between the 4th and 10th instant his dwelling was broken into and the following stolen : Nine 501 b. bags of Golden Gem flour, three bags of No. 1 sugar, and a bag of rice, all branded W.J.McD.; a new under-flan-nel, pair of socks, small mirror, and a quantity of groceries: total value, £8 Bs. 7d.

Waipawa. —John Ireland, stockman, reports stolen from him, on the 26th ultimo, eight £1 notes. Suspicion attached to Richard Woods, or Wood, who was in complainant’s company, and left for Wellington on the Ist instant. Description : Supposed English, a labourer, about thirty-four years of age, about sft. lOin. high, medium build, brown hair, whiskers and moustache full and rather sandy, fresh complexion, small eyes, rough appearance, slightly round-shoul-dered ; wears a shabby grey-tweed suit and hard black-felt hat; very fond of drink.

Wanganui. —Edward Mooney, compositor, reports stolen from him, on the 11th instant, a silver lever hunting-watch, makSr Rotherham, number unknown, and a heavy gold albert chain, long plain links, no locket or pendant attached ; value, £ls. The offence was committed by two men, names unknown, one described as a big man with a black beard, and dressed in a dark coat and white-straw hat. Complainant, who was under the influence of drink at the time, can give no description of the other offender, and cannot identify either of them.

Reefton.— John Gallagher, storekeeper, Cronadun, reports stolen from his dwelling, between the 30th ultimo and 2nd instant, two £5 notes on the Bank of New Zealand, new; thirteen £1 notes, bank unknown ; and about £5 in silver. Suspicion attached to John Moore, a labourer at Joseph H. Silcock’s farm, Larry’s Creek. Description: A native of Sydney, about thirty years of age, about sft. llin. high, medium build, fair complexion, clean-shaved except small fair moustache, square jaws.

Reefton. -—Robert Davie, labourer, Cronadun, reports stolen from his dwelling, between the 7th and 10th instant, a light-tweed sac-suit, with black thread through material, partly worn, back of vest lined with light tweed, “ Simpson and London ” on tab ; value, £4.

Greymouth. —Thomas Brown, labourer, William Street, reports stolen from his dwelling, on the Bth instant, a silver lever open-faced watch, No. 23362, maker unknown ; a silver albert chain, close round thick links, with steel watch-key attached.

Greymouth. Hugh Burnside, labourer, reports stolen from a bedroom in the Rose of Australia Hotel, on the 9th instant, an improved Waterbury watch, double - cased ; a double silver chain, to which was attached a gold medal, with “ H. 8.” engraved on one side, and “ Presented by A. Francis to H. Burnside, for best amateur boxing,” on the other; and 17s. in silver: total value, £5.

Greymouth. Michael Connors, miner, Brandy Jack’s, Totara Flat, reports stolen from a bedroom in the Rose of Australia Hotel, Greymouth, on the 9th instant, a silver lever hunting - watch, maker Rotherham, No. 8640; an English silver lever watch, maker and number unknown ; and a silver albert chain, flat links, with small silver locket attached : value in all, £ll.

Hampden (Oamaru). —Agnes Stewart, servant, Hampden Hotel, reports stolen from her bedroom, on the 7th instant, a ladies’ heavy gold ring, set with a sapphire and two diamonds at each side, value £4 10s.; a ladies’ thin gold ring set with three diamonds, puce and white colour, value £4 ; and a small tortoise-shell penknife with three blades, value 2s. Suspicion attached to two swaggers, names unknown, who slept in the hotel during the previous night. Description : First, a native of Tasmania, about forty years of age, about sft. 6in. high, medium build, dark complexion, dark moustache only ; dressed in a dark-tweed coat, dungaree trousers and vest, and soft black-felt hat. Second, about twenty-five years of age, about sft. 7in. high, slight build, fresh complexion, dark hair, dark moustache only ; wore a greyishtweed suit. Identifiable. They are supposed to have gone to Oamaru.

Dunedin. —Margaret Morrow, King Street, reports stolen from her dwelling, between the 9th November and 24th December, 1896, a Geneva open-faced watch, number unknown, very much worn; a Scotch pebble brooch with golcjfjinaq a pair of gold-mounted greenstone earrings, dropa,separated from bits; a ladies’ weddingring ; two ladi4aWjtm rings—one with five dark stones and broken in the other having three stones, four pearls, dfrd. a snfrall gold stud in centre; a ladies’ gold dress ripgAvith a hand and two hearts, opens in three pieces; two narrow at top, small ball at bottom ; a tortoiseshell eardrop and brooch to match with gold leaf; a small heart-shaped brooch with white stone set in silver ; a small crystal brooch, oval shape, set in silver, gold back; and a small wooden box, covered with dark morocco leather and lined with dark satin: value in all, £7 17s. 6d. Suspicion attached to E. S. Wardell, who boarded with complainant. Description : Twenty-six years of age, sft. Bin. or 9in. high, medium build, brown hair, fair moustache, red face ; dressed in a navy-blue serge suit and a hard black hat. He is still in Dunedin.

Dunedin. —Donald McKercher, Hokonui, Southland, reports stolen from him in Dunedin, on the Ist instant, a silver lever watch, covered case, maker Summers, London, number unknown, “D. C. McKercher” scratched inside; value £5 ; and five £1 notes.

Dunedin. —Mrs. John Bain, Halfway Bush, reports stolen from her at the Dunedin Railway-station, on the 12th instant, a common leather purse with brass clasp, containing a £1 note, two half-sovereigns, a watch-key, a gold brooch, horse-shoe design, inscribed on back “ From Jennie Lee,” value £5; a threepenny-bit, and two coppers.
