Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person, &c.

Kamo. —Breaking into and stealing from Joseph Hannam s dwelling: The suspect’s name is George Hayward, and a warrant for his arrest has been issued by the Whangarei Bench. He expressed his intention of going to Masterton to work for Charles Waylan, by whom he was formerly employed, but no trace of him can be obtained, and it is supposed he has gone to Sydney. The two postal notes reported stolen have been found.

Auckland. —Samuel Marks, boardinghouse-keeper, Lower Queen Street, reports that on the 9th instant his premises were broken into, and tobacco and cigarettes, value £l6 Bs. 9d., stolen.

Napier.- —James Johnstone, licensee Star Hotel, reports stolen from his bedroom, on the Bth instant, a very large double-breasted pilot-cloth overcoat, nearly new, trimmed with rather wide dark braid, lined with Italian cloth, value £4; and a grey-tweed coat, with cape, light-check lining, value £2. Suspicion attached to James Murphy, alias Frank Mitchell, &c., who offered the overcoat for sale to a second-hand-dealer on the date of the theft. He has since been arrested on a charge of breaking and entering a store at Fernhill. (For description, see Police Gazette, 1896, page 26.)

Masterton. —Miss Maud Renall reports stolen from her dwelling, on the 12th instant, a ladies’ heavy 18-carat gold

dress-ring, with large diamond in four-claw setting, and a ladies’ light 18-carat gold engagement-ring, with three small diamonds in a square, close gipsy setting; value, £l2.

Upper Hutt.— John Millar Southee reports stolen from his dwelling, during the night of the 30th ultimo, a silver lever double-cased watch, maker Jenness, Wellington, number unknown; a silver chain and a star medal, marked “F. Hill ” : value, £5. Suspicion attached to John Keefe, a colonial, eighteen years of age, sft. 7in. high, dark complexion, medium build, stoops when walking; dressed in a dark suit, and brown-felt hat ; jockey appearance. Has been seen in Wellington.

Wellington. —Henry F. Davis, draper, 41, Brougham Street, reports that on the 23rd or 24th ultimo his dwelling was broken into, and the following stolen : An old-fashioned silver bracelet, set with Scotch pebbles ; a ladies’dark-green cashmere cloak, lined with fur; a dark-brown sealette jacket with fur collar, tight-fitting; a girls’ new pale-green serge dress; a white marcella quilt, extra large size; a white blanket; a feather pillow, with new tick cover and pillowslip; a pair of sheets; two ladies’ calico night-dresses, trimmed with Swiss work, marked “ J. M. Davis ” ; a pair of grey trousers, invisible stripe ; a table-cover, fringed, red-and-black pattern, heavy thread; a large white-damask tablecloth ; a veneered work-box, 14in. by Bin. by 6in., musical box at bottom, inside fittings taken out; a black-lace even-ing-dress skirt; a ladies’ brown-tweed dress-body ; 8 yards of Kidderminster carpet, bed-room pattern, nearly new; two yards of Kidderminster carpet, worn ; a pair of dark navyblue uniform trousers : 2J yards of white-feather trimming ; a sterling silver butter-knife ; a gold safety-pin brooch with bird set in pearls; a cream-coloured silk sash; a silver pencil-case ; child’s silver bangle; one or two infants’ flannels; a ladies’ flannel singlet; two boys’ ditto; one or two white shirts ; a large bath-towel; hand broom ; 4 yards of Turkey-red twill; a knitted tea-cosy, pink and dark-grey wool; an old dark purse, containing machine needles, &c.; a gold safety-pin brooch, lily in front; a child’s white calico petticoat; a heliotrope cheffon tie; child’s woollen cape; silver spoon; two chambers—one white and gold, the other pearl with inlaid silver ; a cut-glass salt-cellar ; and two dozen bottles of jam and preserved fruits ; value in all, £36 Bs. 6d.

Pahautanui (Wellington). raumu, reports that on the 10th instant his dwelling was broken into, and one £5 and seven £1 notes stolen. Suspicion attached to three men; names unknown. Description : First, about forty years of age, grey moustache ; dressed in an old brown-tweed coat, light-tweed pants, and soft brown hat; carried a sack swag. Second, about nineteen years of age, about sft. llin. high, slight build, fair complexion; wore a grey-tweed suit and soft grey hat; carried an oilcloth swag. Third, about sft. 6in. high, large mouth; dressed in a black coat, grey trousers, and soft black hat; had a brown-blanket swag. They were seen going towards Wellington.

Lyttelton. —Emily Oatherew, Grant Road, Wellington, reports stolen from her at Lyttelton, on the 2nd instant, a brown-leather purse, containing a half-sovereign, a saloon ticket per s.s. “ Penguin,” in her own name, and a gold ring with diamond set in claw, two hearts, and true-lovers’ knot; value, £ls. Reported to the Wellington police.

Rakaia.— Thomas Rooney, charged with stealing Robert Stewart’s property from the Railwav Hotel, has been arrested by Constable D. Jackson, Ashburton police, and remanded to Rakaia. Boots only recovered.

Coalgate.— Patrick Doyle, farmer, reports stolen from a travelling-hut at Waireka, between the 4th and 7th instant, a yellow-leather purse, containing three £1 notes, 4s. 6d. in silver, and a receipt for 15s. signed by Dr. Ingles.

Dunedin.— Bridget Diggs is charged on warrant with the theft, on the 7th instant, of a black-silk skirt, and a brown jacket, value 10s. 6d., the property of Jane Jones, Walker Street. Jacket since recovered. Offender is Scotch, a prostitute, about forty-three years of age, sft. 2in. high, stout build, sore eves; wore a black dress and black-straw hat. (See Police Gazette, 1893, page 84.) Is accompanied by a man named Robert Owen, about thirty-five years of age, sft. 7in. high, stout build, heavy brown moustache; dressed in a light-tweed suit. They are supposed to be walking towards Oamaru.

Seddonville. —Stealing from the dwelling of Thomas Johnstone Jones : One of the hopper-plates, and the pieces of timber, have been recovered from Thomas Davidson, a boy, aged twelve years. Complainant declines to prosecute.
