Miscellaneous Information.

Appointment as Constable. Charles Findlay, No. 730.

District Constable, Cheviot, appointed. William James Whatman has been sworn in as a district constable at Cheviot, Canterbury, and North Otago District, from the 7th instant. (96/71.)

Dismissal. Constable David Reidy, No. 586

Station reopened. Normanby, Wanganui and West Coast District, 10th instant. (95/987.)

Station closed. Southbridge, Canterbury and North Otago District, 7th instant. (96/73.)

Forage. (Circular No. 6/96.) Attention is drawn to Circular No. 15, of the 26th November, 1888, which appears to have been frequently overlooked. It is also observed that the full ration is issued daily at many stations where the mounted duty is not large. At some of these places police paddocks are already formed, and, where there are none, grazing should, if possible, be obtained, and a saving effected thereby. Inspectors in charge of districts are therefore requested to give this matter their special consideration, and report fully thereon, with the view of strict economy in this item of expenditure. A. H. Hume, Commissioner of Police. Wellington, 15th February, 1896. (96/144.)

Return discontinued. Thb monthly “ Return of Fines ” (Form No. 29) is no longer required.

Rewards. Detective Robert Neill, No. 245, and Constable F. S. Cox, No. 714, Wellington police, have been awarded £4 and £3 respectively for special services rendered in the prosecution of Annie Brown and John Henry Brown, who were convicted of procuring abortion. (Vide Police Gazette, 1896, page 15.)

Constable D. Jackson, No. 622, Ashburton police, has been awarded £2 from the Reward Fund for zeal and ability displayed in the detection and prosecution of William Cobeldick, convicted on two charges of sheep-stealing, and sentenced to six months’ labour. (96/173.) Sergeant J. Slattery, No. 7, and Constables P. Minogue, No. 496, and J. C. Griffiths, No. 673, Palmerston North police, have been awarded £3 each for services in securing a conviction against Hetty Crop, fined £SO and costs for sly grog-selling. (95/1609.) Constable D. Lloyd, No. 402, Picton police, has been awarded ss. by the Customs Department for obtaining a conviction under the Beer Duty Act. (96/37.) The sum of £3 has been awarded to Constable C. Stanyer, No. 567, of Otorohanga, and £1 10s. to Native Constable Hoponi, of the same place, for services rendered in obtaining a conviction against William Bond for sly grog-selling at Te Kuiti. (96/128.) Constable J. Riordan, Waipawa police, has been awarded £6 by the Hawke’s Bay Acclimatisation Society for services in securing a conviction for fishing without a license, (96/37.)
