Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person, &c.

Auckland. Julia Fairs, 198, Victoria Street, reports stolen from her, on the Avondale Racecourse, on the 12th ultimo, a ladies’ chased silver hunting-watch, maker and number unknown; and a ladies’ fine gold chain, to which was attached a gold wedding-ring ; a dress-ring set with a ruby, and a greenstone locket: value, £9.

Waiiii (Thames). —-William McWatters, storekeeper, reports that on the 9th or 10th instant his dwelling was broken into, and the following stolen : Three improved Waterbury watches, a silver lever hunting-watch (makers Stewart, Dawson, and Go.), number unknown, three shillings’ worth of tobacco, and 2s. in coin; total value, £7 12s. Gd.

Rawene (Hokianga).— Aporo Cook reports stolen from a whare at Takarae, between the 16th and 19th ultimo, five cheques, drawn by A. G. Yarborough on the Union Bank of Australia, Auckland viz., W 37860, for £2, payable to “ 1867 ”; W 37836, £1 55., payable to “ 1843 ”; W 37837, £1 55., payable to “ 1844 ”; W 3783, for £1 55., payable to “ 1846 ” ; and W 37840, for £1 55., payable to “ 1847 ” ; also, ss. in silver. Four other cheques stolen at the same time have been recovered from storekeepers in the district. Payment of the missing ones has been stopped.

Whitiangi. —Charles Erickson, miner, Kuaotunu, reports stolen from his bedroom in the Royal Hotel, an open-faced English silver level-watch, maker “ Richard Hill ” on the face, “C.E.” scratched on the back, gold minute- and silver hour-hand, number unknown ; value, £5 ss.

Whangaroa. Fred Lupas, gumdigger, Kaeo, reports that on the 26th ultimo his whare was broken into and the following stolen : A steel trunk, containing a suit of black clothes, well worn ; a black sac-coat and vest, nearly new ; a pair of light-coloured tweed trousers, nearly new; a bard black-felt hat, flat top; two pairs of light-grey woollen drawers, two white shirts, two flannel shirts, a flannel undershirt, a new black waterproof coat, two pillow-slips, two neckties, two linen collars, a silk handkerchief (since recovered), two cups and three saucers, several pairs of socks, and a pass-book with “Austrian” writing in it; value, £lO. Also, seven £1 bank-notes. The silk handkerchief has been found in possession of Pere Makarini, since convicted and sentenced to two months’ imprisonment. Suspicion is also attached to Tiaki Hone Ararua, living near Te Mata. (For his description, see Police Gazette , 1893, page 130.)

Napier. —John Montgomery reports stolen from his bedroom at the Cafe, Spit, on the 15th instant, nine £1 notes, and a cheque for £l, No. F 56965, on the Colonial Bank of New Zealand, Napier, drawn by F. G. Smith in favour of complainant. Suspicion attached to William Simmons, who occupied an adjoining room. He has since been committed for trial at Wellington for theft.

Napier. —Robert Anderson, gardener, reports stolen from him, on the sth instant, an old silver Geneva open-faced watch, No. 3058 ; value, 12s. 6d.

Hastings. —James McKenna, hawker, Napier, reports stolen from him in Hastings, on the 7th instant, a metal carbine watch, a silver lever hunting-watch, small piece chipped off face; an order on Wenley and Lanauze, for £3 Bs. 6d., drawn by W. Riddels, payable to “ Hawker”; three cheques on the Union Bank of Australia, Napier, drawn by Leslie McHardy, for £2, £1 7s. 6d., and £1 ss. respectively ; two on the same bank by C. N. St. Hill, for £5 and £2 respectively; two on the Colonial Bank, Napier, drawn by G. W. Busby, for £5 and £1 respectively; and three on the Bank of New Zealand, Napier, by W. and C. Hales —viz., one for £4 ss. in favour of G. Russell; one for £2 9s. in favour of J. McKenna ; and the other for £l.

Feilding. —Albert Mcßeth, sheepfarmer, Kiwitea, reports that, on the 12th or 13th instant, his dwelling was broken into and the following stolen: A ladies’ gold open-faced watch, gold dial, chased case, marked “ VI.” or “ VII.” inside, maker Hugh, Palmerston North ; a gold double-ply chain, about 7in. long, small links, to which was attached, as pendants, a small gold barrel, two short chains with gold balls, and a small gold oval-shaped locket, chased on one side and Masonic emblem on the other ; a gold bar brooch, medium size, dove in centre, set with pearls; a thin goldwire bangle, repaired about the centre, with small gold heart-shaped ornament attached; and a black-leather reti-cule-purse (chain missing), containing three £1 notes on the Bank of Australasia, a half-sovereign, and 9s. in silver: total value, £lB 19s.

Christchurch. Margaret Elizabeth Higgins, matron, Jubilee Home, Woolston, reports stolen from her bedroom, on the 25th instant, a ladies’ gold open - faced watch, “ Mathey ” on dial, “ M. E. Higgins ” on inside of case ; and a ladies’ gold albert chain, with two keys attached, one gold set with two stones, and the other a common key: value, £ls.

Hampden (Oamaru).— Stealing from John Young’s dwelling. Patrick Moore has been arrested for this offence by Detective T. O’Brien, Oamaru police, and sentenced to four months’ imprisonment. Stolen property recovered.

Palmerston South.— John Walker, Dunback, reports stolen from his dwelling, on the 12th instant, loz. 12dvvt. of rough alluvial gold, about the size of split peas; value, £6. Some of the pieces identifiable.

Dunedin. —William Lindhurst is charged on warrant with having, on the 10th instant, stolen from the dwelling of Walter Towler a quantity of bacon, a set of brushes, and an iron plate ; value, 12s. Brushes and plate since recovered. Offender is a native of Dunedin, twenty years of age, sft. 3in. high, sallow complexion, brown hair inclined to curl, very small moustache only, medium build, larrikin appearance ; dressed in an old faded brown tweed suit.

Dunedin. —Mrs. McKenzie, of Queenstown, reports stolen from her at the Garrison Hall, Dunedin, on the 20th instant, a dark-brown Russian-leather purse, blue lining, “ G. McKenzie ” inside flap, containing Bs. or 9s. in silver, a crossed cheque on the Colonial Bank of New Zealand, Dunedin, for £3 3s. 2d., and a second-class return ticket, KingstownDunedin.

Clinton. Frederick Watkins, engine-cleaner, reports stolen from his hut, between the 2nd and 6th instant, a black-leather purse with white lining, patent clasp, nearly new, containing a £5 note, two £1 notes, two sovereigns, and 10s. in silver.

Ross (Westland). — Edward Jones reports that, on the sth.instant, his dwelling was broken into, and the following stolen : A square silver medal, about l£in., cricketer and bat on one side ; a silver 50-cent piece, and a Post-Office SavingsBank book, No. 5748, the property of Charles Jones ; also, a white-handled pocketknife with two blades, and a small tomahawk, the property of Frederick Jones: value in all, £2 2s.

Seddonville (Westland). — Thomas Johnstone Jones reports stolen from his dwelling at Granity Creek, between the 7th June last and the 4th instant, a silver watch-chain, a pair of blue blankets, two hopper-plates, a long-handled shovel (piece cut off handle), a pair of canoe-sculls, a pumpsucker, and some pieces of timber, matches, tea, &c. ; value about £5. Entrance effected by wrenching off a weatherboard, complainant being in the Westport Hospital at the time.
