Horse- and Cattle-stealing.
Woodville. —Alfred Gower is charged on warrant with having, about the 17th ultimo, stolen from the Oringi Station, near Woodville, seventeen head of cattle (recovered), value £SO, the property of Monckton Brothers. Offender is a colonial, a farmer, thirty-seven or thirty-eight years of age, sft. 3in. or 4in. high, stiff stoutish build, swaggering gait, smart active appearance, dark-brown hair beard whiskers and moustache cut short, dark complexion, regular features ; dressed in a drab coat and trousers, and hard-bitter hat of the same colour ; wears leggings : will most probably disguise ; well educated ; a good horseman ; very fond of racing. He entered the stolen cattle for sale in Abrahams and Williams’ saleyards, Palmerston North, on the above-men-tioned date, and they were disposed of on the following day. He left Woodville on the 24th ultimo, riding an inferior black mare, and will probably make for some isolated place until he can get away from tho colony.
Wiiangaroa.— Hone Kiri is charged with having, about the month of April, 1894, at Te Mata, near Kaeo, stolen a pony, value £2, the property of William Preston, gumdigger, of Kerikeri. Since recovered. Offender is a Maori, abo°ut forty years of age, sft. 7in. or Bin. high, rather light complexion, several front teeth out. He can be identified by James Reynolds, gum-digger, of Kaeo, to whom he sold the pony during the above month.
(See Police Gazette, 1895, page 123.) Kihikihi. —Stealing Nathaniel Harvey’s gelding: The suspect Tuhatau returned to the Parawera Native Settlement about the Ist instant from Morrinsville, and is supposed to have left or sold the animal in the latter district.
Kihikihi. — William Henry Grace, Tokanui, reports stolen between the 7th and 13th ultimo two milch cows—one red with white patch on forehead, white about the flanks and belly, triangular piece out of under-side of left ear, one horn deformed, indistinct brand like HG on left rump, about ten years old ; the other small, all red, unbranded, piece out of left ear, about five years old : value, £5 each.
Te Awamutu. —Charles Alexander, Mangapiko, reports stolen, between tho 9th and 11th ultimo, a yellowish-red and white cow, branded JGJ on rump, piece out of top of left ear; value, £5.
