Otaki. —Alexander Gillies is charged on warrant with false pretences on George O’Loughlin, hotelkeeper, on the 19th ultimo. Offender is of Scotch parentage, a stationhand, forty-five to fifty years of age, about sft. lOin. high, medium build, fresh complexion; brownish hair, beard, whiskers and moustache, turning grey, blue eyes ; dressed in a dark-tweed sac-suit, and hard black-felt hat with wide rim. Has a brother, named Bob, in the Wairarapa district, and another, Hugh, at Palmerston North. Is probably identical with Alexander Gillies, vide Police Gazette, 1894, pages 82 and 186. He obtained refreshments and cash to the extent of £2, for which he gave his cheque on the Bank of New Zealand, Woodville, but it appears that he has no account there.

Martinborough. —Re John Lunny, George Sanders, H. Hunter, and Michael Ryan, charged with fraud on David Hope Johnston : Lunny has been arrested by Detective R. Neill, Wellington police, and remanded to Featherton, where the information was dismissed. The warrant for the arrest of the other three men has been cancelled.

Wellington. —George Ellis, charged with false pretences on James H. Jackson, Petone, has been arrested by Constable A. Berriman, Taupo police. Offender is identical with George Dale Ellis, vide Police Gazette, 1895, pages 67, 70, and 132, and has been committed for trial at Napier on four charges of uttering forged cheques.

Hawera. —Robert Marr, fraudulent bankrupt, has been arrested by Sergeant Stagpoole, Hawera police, and remanded.

Christchurch. Richard Pape is charged on warrant with false pretences on Walter Stuart Parker, farmer, at Prebbleton, on the 9th October, 1894. Description: German, a farmer, thirty-five years of age, sft. llin. high, slight build, fair complexion, light-brown hair, pale-blue eyes, reddish whiskers beard and moustache worn long, stammers when speaking. Offender sold complainant a wagon for £ls, stating it was free from incumbrance, there being a bill of sale on the same. This is a private prosecution.

Geraldine. —A Mitchell, charged with having forged and uttered a cheque to John Morrison, has been arrested by Constable M. Roche, Amberley police, and remanded to Geraldine.

Oamaru. —H. Webb (name probably fictitious) is charged on warrant with having, on the 7th instant, forged and uttered to Winter Henry Webber, New Zealand Clothing Factory, a cheque for £4 12s. Offender is supposed English, thirty to thirty-five years of age, about sft. lOin. high, medium build, fresh complexion, light-brown hair, clean shaved except fairish moustache, good address, plays the piano and sings, talks about the army ; was wearing a new grey-tweed sac-suit, brown-tweed cap, or drab soft-felt hat; may have a new dark-broyvn waterproof coat. The cheque is drawn on the Union Bank of Australia, Waimate, and purports to be signed by John Fleming Douglas, of Waihao Downs Station, but has been declared a forgery. Other similar charges are pending.
