Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person, &c.

Auckland.— Mrs. Emily Duthie, Vincent Street, reports stolon from her at the cemetery, Takapuna, on the 4th instant, a black-leather purse, two compartments, containing six £1 notes 16s, in silver and two receipted accounts.

Tauranga. —Anthonia Abraham, Italian hawker, reports stolen from the Yorkshire Grey Hotel, Te Puke, between the Ist and 3rd instant, seven large white-silk handkerchiefs, hems about 2in. deep, flowers worked in each corner, and “ Good luck ” in centre ; value, 10s. each.

New Plymouth. —Mrs. J. Petrie, Mangorei, reports stolen from her dwelling, about the latter part of April or beginning of May last, a small tortoiseshell box, bound in gold, about 4in. by 3in. by l£in., having a gentleman’s medallion set in gold on the lid; a small octagonal-shaped mother-of-pearl box, set in silver, containing a dried specimen of the Hippocampus ; two albums containing stamps, and a large collection of loose ones : value, £l3l. Suspicion attached to Ernest Warrick, a youth who was staying at complainant’s at the time above-mentioned. He is a native of London, sixteen years of age, about sft. 4in. high, slender build, dark complexion, no hair on face; usually wears dark clothes, and hard black-felt hat with low crown ; is now residing at Waitara. The boxes are over a hundred years old, and, as most of the stamps are very rare, it is thought they will be offered for sale to collectors in the larger towns.

New Plymouth. —Frank Eaynes reports stolen from his bedroom at the Imperial Hotel, during the night of the 29th ultimo, seven sovereigns and 15s. in silver. Suspicion attached to Arthur George Hinge, alias Thompson (see Police Gazette, 1894, pages 115, 136, and 160), and two other “ spielers,” of whom no description can be given. They left for Hawera on the following day.

Wellington. —James B. Kidman, “ Whitehall,” 21, Bolton street, reports stolen from his dwelling, on the 28th or 29th ultimo, two pearl-handled electro-plated knives, with ferns on blades, and five forks to match ; a silver knife, with monogram “ G.R.W.”; a silver sifting sugar-ladle ; a silver mug, engraved “J.M.W.”; a silver cream-jug, ferns engraved on sides ; nine electro-plated egg-cups, ribbed, with holes on bottoms; a large fish-slice, handle loose ; a wooden pipe, with silver band and curved amber mouthpiece, in case; a ladies’ rain-coat, brown material with dark stripe ; and a gentlemen’s blue-serge ulster with cape, brown and blue lining: value, £lO.

Christchurch. —Emma Ingles, barmaid, Central Hotel, reports stolen from her bedroom, on the 7th instant, a gold ivy-leaf brooch, with a fly on it; fly has red head, green eyes, and diamond-spangled wings : value, £4 10s.

Christchurch. William Kerr Morrison, storekeeper, Opawa, reports that, on the sth or 6th instant, his dwelling was broken into, and tbe following stolen : Seven £1 notes ; three half-sovereigns; £1 15s. in pence and halfpence; £1 11s. in silver ; an Italian silver coin, one lira, about the size of a shilling ; and a Russian coin, bent, about the size of a sixpence, having a spread-eagle with shield on breast on one side, and figures 10 with a Greek word on the other.

Dunedin. —George Harrison, carter, reports that, at 1 a.m. on the 4th instant, in Duke Street, a man, name unknown, stole from him a silver lever double-cased watch ; value, £8 10s. Offender is described as about twenty years of age, sft. 6in. or 7in. high, slender build, clean-shaved except small dark moustache, dressed in dark-grey clothes and soft dark-felt hat. His identification is doubtful.

Invercargill. —Henry Howells, licensee, Imperial Hotel, reports stolen from his bedroom, on the 27th or 28th ultimo, a cash-box containing twenty-three £1 notes ; £7 10s. in gold and silver, cheques, &c.; and a basket containing four £1 notes, and 7s. in silver, papers, &c. Box and basket, both minus the money, since found. Suspicion attached to Robert McGill, a native of the north of Ireland, twenty-six years of age, sft. 7in. high, stout build, grey eyes, dark hair and moustache only, fresh complexion, a labourer or goldminer, doubtful character, well known at Invercargill and Preservation Inlet.

Invercargill. —James McNulty, Waiau, reports stolen from him, while asleep in the Public Gardens, Invercargill, on the 27th ultimo, a silver lever hunting-watch, No. makers G. and T. Young, Dunedin; and a silver chain, cable pattern : value, £9.

Wyndham. —Ellen McNally, servant, Railway Hotel, reports stolen from her bedroom on the 4th or sth instant, five £1 notes on the Colonial Bank. Suspicion attached to Benjamin Barker, English, a music-teacher and pianofortetuner, twenty-eight years of age, sft. Bin. or 9in. high, light build, light-brown hair, light moustache only, pale face. Living in Wyndham.
