Prescribing a Close Season for Seals. GLASGOW, Governor. ORDER IN COUNCIL. At the Government House, at Christchurch, this thirtieth day of December, 1893.

Present: His Excellency the Governor in Council. WHEREAS by 11 The Fisheries Conservation Act, 1884 ” (hereinafter termed “the said Act”), it is, among other things, enacted that the Governor in Council may from time to time make, alter, and revoke regulations (which shall have force and effect only in any waters or places specified therein) for prescribing, among other things, a close season or close seasons for seals:

And whereas it is provided by the third section of “ The Fisheries Conservation Act 1884 Amendment Act, 1887,” that a penalty not exceeding five hundred pounds may be imposed in respect of the breach of any regulations respecting seals, and a further penalty of not exceeding twenty pounds for every seal illegally taken : And whereas it is expedient to make the regulations hereinafter set forth with respect to seals inhabiting or found within the waters of the colony hereinafter mentioned: Now, therefore, His Excellency the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, in pursuance and exercise of the powers conferred by the said Act and “ The Fisheries Conservation Act 1884 Amendment Act, 1887,” and acting by and with the advice and consent of the Executive Council of the said colony, doth hereby make the regulations set forth in the Schedule hereto; and with the like advice and consent doth order that such regulations shall have force and effect throughout the Colony of New Zealand, and in all salt, fresh, and brackish waters of the colony, and on all shores of such waters or any part thereof.

SCHEDULE. Regulations. 1. The months of January, February, March, April, May, and June, 1894, are hereby prescribed as the close season for seals. 2. No person shall buy, sell, or expose for sale, or have in possession any seal, or the skins, oil, or blubber of any seal, taken during the close season hereby prescribed for the same. 3. Any person committing a breach of any of theso regulations shall he liable to a penalty of not less than £5 and not exceeding £SOO, and a further penalty of not exceeding £2O for every seal illegally taken. 4. Every penalty imposed by these regulations shall ho recovered in a summary manner before any two or more Justices of the Peace. PAT BOYLE, Acting Clerk of the Executive Council.
