John Henry Gainge, or Shepherd, is inquired for by Innes and Elliott, attorneys and notaries, Port Elizabeth, Cape of Good Hope, on behalf of his parents, and concerning some property. He left Deptford Green, Kent, in 1875, by a vessel named the “ Clair Helen,” and is said to have been employed in this colony by Messrs. Brogden, railway contractors. (93/1668.)

George Lane is inquired for by Mr. John Frost, 278, Colombo Street, Christchurch. Description : A native of Devonshire, England, a butcher, sixty-four years of age, about sft. lOin. high, thin build, slight stoop, sandy complexion, sandy hair beard and moustache, turning grey; single. Has been about thirty years in the colony, and worked for Mr. Knight, butcher, Lower High Street, Christchurch, up to about eight weeks ago. Was formerly employed on Messrs. W. an,d H. Beetham’s station, Brancepeth, Masterton.

Carl (or Charley) Leopold is inquired for through the Waipawa Police. Description : A German, a shepherd and wool-classer, sixty years of age, sft. Gin. or 7in. high, grey hair and whiskers, slight stoop, dark birth-mark on right cheek-bone ; fond of drink. He left Waipawa in September, 1892, and was in the Wairarapa district about March last. His wife intends to take proceedings unless he voluntarily contributes towards her support.

Mrs. Francis Mitchell is inquired for by the Dunedin Police, with the view of compelling her to support her child in the Auckland Industrial School. Description: A dressmaker, forty-one or forty-two years of age, sft. 3in. or 4in. high, fair complexion, thin face, slight build, genteel appearance. She left her husband in Dunedin in the early part of 1890, and lived with a young man named John Davis, a bootmaker, employed at Mr. McKay’s, Cookham House, Dunedin. They disappeared about June in the same year, and it is thought that they are still living together. As her child is blind, and will probably be a burden on the State for life, it is requested that every effort may be made to trace her. Her husband, Francis Mitchell, is an expressman, now of Tory Street, Wellington; but inquiries there have been without result. Davis is a colonial, twenty-eight years of age, sft. s£in. high, fair complexion, brown hair, light moustache, no beard, about 9 stone weight, a salesman by occupation. He left for Melbourne about throe years ago.

Elizabeth Thomas, who left South Dunedin for Oamaru early in 1892, is inquired for at the instance of the Education Department. She is English, a widow, thirty-five years of age, sft. lin. or 2in. high, dark-brown hair, light-blue eyes. If found, a report as to her circumstances should be sent to the Inspector of Police, Dunedin.

John Tate is missing from Kaikoura (Marlborough) sinca the 28th ultimo. Description : English, a labourer, forty to forty-five years of ago, sft. Bin. high, stout build, brown hair beard whiskers and moustache, a few grey hairs intermixed, round full face. He arrived from Blenheim on the above date, and on the following day his swag, hat, and billy were found on the beach. It is believed that his brother William is employed in the Railway Department, at Auckland.

James Henry Cottam Townson is inquired for by his half-sister, Mrs. Faithwaite, Patchetts, Caton, Lancaster, England. He arrived at Wellington in October, 1890, and worked at Otaki and Paraparaumu as a flax-mill hand aud firewood-cutter up to about April last, and is said to have been in Wellington about three months ago, when he expressed his intention of leaving for England if he could make arrangements with some shipping company for a cheap passage. The following description, furnished by the Otaki police, is the best obtainable: English, about fortyeight years of age, about sft. 9in. high, medium to stout build, sallow complexion, dark or dark-brown hair beard whiskers (long and bushy) and moustache, all turning slightly grey; generally dressed in a dark-tweed coat, coloured-moleskin trousers, and round hard black-felt hat; very quiet and retiring.
