Waverley. —James Walker, charged with forging and uttering a cheque to W. H. Southcombe: It has been ascertained that this offender is identical with Duncan Calvert Monteith, alias H. M. Brandon, wanted for obtaining money by means of a valueless cheque from Robert T. Batley, Moawhanga, on the 21st December last. (Vide Police Gazette, 1893, page 2.) Amended description: Scotch, a woolclasser, about sixty years of age, sft. sin. high, slight build, grey hair, florid complexion, dark-brown side-whiskers and moustache, chin shaved, small face, lips and mouth disfigured, teeth gone, except a few front ones, which are very black; dressed in a brown-tweed suit, black slouch hat, Zealandia shooting-boots (new), with nails. (See also Police Gazette, 1891, page 99, and 1889, page 191.) He is further charged with having forged and uttered a cheque for £4 2s. to Thomas Ellis, of the Commercial Hotel, Waverley, on the 2nd ultimo. Arrest important.

Wanganui. —Griffith L. Davies, charged with embezzling £2, money of his employers, Dimond and Hart: The following is an amended description of this offender: A native of South Australia, a clerk, twenty-five years of age, sft. Gin. high, fair complexion, long fair curly hair, weak blue eyes, medium build, slight moustache only, large nose, medium mouth and chin, anchor and CD on left arm; dressed in a dark-tweed coat and vest, check-tweed trousers (worn at bottoms), hard black hat, and lace-up boots (worn at sides); gentlemanly appearance. He is identical with David Johnston, alias Griffith Davies, convicted of drunkenness and wilful damage at Palmerston North on the 6th ultimo. Adams, at one time employed in the Railway Department, Wanganui, and who was last heard of at Levin, Wellington District. His brother is a solicitor at Patea.

United States of America. —Albert Mitchell, alias Arthur Austin, is charged with the larceny and embezzlement of #5,000. Description : An American, a fisherman and drayman, sft. Sin. high, weight about 1451 b., about forty-four years of age, stiff iron-grey hair and moustache, may wear stiff grey beard or be shaven, light-grey eyes, bushy eyebrows, Roman nose, slightly deaf, short, thick hands, stubby fingers. Offender left America about twelve months ago ; and, by a cablegram from the Secretary of State at Washington to the American Consul, Auckland, was supposed to be at Onehunga, but cannot be found there. He has probably gone inland, and, if traced, the Inspector of Police at Auckland should be at once informed by wire. Arrest important.

Port Albert (Auckland). —William Fountain is charged on warrant with false pretences on David Jones, storekeeper, Wellsford, Kaipara, on the 2Gth ultimo. Offender is fifty years of age, sft. Gin. high, dark hair turning grey, cleanshaved except goatee. He obtained goods to the value of £5 on promising complainant he would sell him his gum, but went away without doing so. Supposed to have gone to Auckland.

Wairoa. —John Kernehan, alias Monehan, for disobeying an order of Court, has been arrested by Constable D. Shaw, Wairoa, and sent to gaol.

Napier. —C. S. Williams is charged on warrant with having, on the Ist instant, obtained the sum of £4 from Sir William Wasteneys, solicitor, by false pretences. Description: English, about twenty-six years of age, about sft. lOin. high, slight build, brown hair and eyes, small brown moustache (generally waxed to a point) only, pale unhealthy complexion, cut above bridge of nose, and a recent mark on cheek ; walks with a slight limp ; usually wears a dark sac- or serge-suit, and brown-felt hat. Offender obtained the amount by falsely representing that he had been appointed district agent for the National Mutual Life Association of Australasia, and engaged an office, but it appears that he was an ordinary canvasser only. He left by train for Wellington on the above date, accompanied by his wife, about twenty-four years of age, about sft. sin. high, medium build, dark hair ; generally dresses in dark clothes.

Dunedin. —Samuel Berry is charged on warrant with stealing £SOO from Alfred Hunt, his partner, at Stirling, on the Ist instant. Description : Scotch, about thirty-five years of age, sft. 9in. or lOin. high, medium build, light brown

hair beard whiskers and moustache (will likely shave his whiskers off), has a small wart or growth under lower lip; a hawker of drapery ; wore a dark-tweed sac-suit, black waterproof coat with cape, and soft black hat. He took the money in bank-notes, and will probably obtain a draft, and leave the colony.
