John Ross is charged, on warrant issued by the Wellington Bench, with having, on the 20th April last, at Feilding, obtained from Frederick Bismarck forty-four head of cattle, value £I7G, by falsely representing that he was in partnership with Alick Rutridge, of Kairanga, and wanted them to stock the farm. Description: Supposed English, a cattledealer, about thirty-five years of age, oft. 6in. high, medium build, brown hair, fair beard and moustache, shaved on cheeks; dressed in grey-tweed sac-suit, trousers strapped. Last seen on or about the Ist ultimo at Palmerston North, and then said he was going to Otaki; was riding a grey horse, and had two dogs with him. ftzPp /O

Richard George Peacock is charged, on warrant issued by the Collingwood Bench, with having, at Collingwood, at divers times, fraudulently taken and applied to his own use the sums of £ll 45., £l7 17s. 4d., and 155., the moneys of the Collingwood Public Hall Company, of which company he was an officer. Description: English, about thirty-five years of age, sft. 9in. or lOin. high, medium build, light-blue eyes, sandy complexion, red face, about a month’s growth

of whiskers; generally wears fore-and-aft peak-cap, black knotty - tweed coat, pepper - and - salt coloured trousers ; gentlemanly appearance, fond of drink. Offender left on the 10th ultimo for Waitapu, intending, it is believed, to get away in one of the small timber-vessels. He will probably make for the Tasmania silver-mines.

Sydney Morrison is charged with failing to comply with t the conditions of his release under section 9, subsections 2 and 5, of “ The First Offenders’ Probation Act, 1886.” Description : English, a labourer and sailor, forty-two years of age, sft. Bin. high, medium build, dark complexion, brown hair turning grey, grey eyes, medium nose, heavy dark moustache, “ Rosetta Morrison ” tattooed on right arm, mark of cut on nose, scar on lower lip ; dressed in dirty dark-tweed suit. Convicted at the Supreme Court, Napier, on the 3rd March, 1891, of larceny as a bailee, sentenced to two years’ probation, and ordered to pay £2l costs, but has failed to pay the first instalment or report himself. On the 23rd ultimo he was discharged from Wanganui Gaol, having been committed for twenty-four hours, in default of fine, for drunkenness. Previously worked in the Momohaki Bush for James Leo, of Waverley, and will most likely ship on board some vessel.

Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from. Dwellings.

Stolen on the 22nd ultimo, from the Otakelio Hotel, Otakeho, Taranaki, a case of Hennessy’s one-star brandy, marked GKO and JHC, Nelson; value £3 10s.; the property of George Thomas Kelland. Suspicion attached to a half-caste Maori, named Jackson, forty to forty-five years of age, about 6ft. high, slight build, dark complexion, brown eyes, thin features, high cheek-bones, hollow cheeks, full dark beard whiskers and moustache, hair tinged grey, speaks good English ; living at Taikatu Pa.

Stolen on the 29th ultimo, from a hut at Springfield Station, near Methven, Canterbury, a black-twilled sac-coat, not much worn; a soft grey-felt hat, nearly new, band torn off ; a new hollow-ground razor, notched at heel, in case ; and a pair of elastic braces ; value £110s.; the property of James Harrington. A coloured shirt and flannel singlet; value 65.; the property of Thomas Daly. Also a nair of elastic-side boots, nearly new, strap at back torn off one of them, and a pair of^ocks; value 16s. 6d.; belonging to James Dickie. Identifiable, except the socks. Suspicion attached to a man named Pierce, alias Driscoll, who occupied the premises with complainants, and left on above date for Ashburton during their absence. Description : A Londoner, a sailor, twentyone or twenty-two years of age, about sft. Bin. high, fair hair, small fair moustache only, long features, very long nose, swarthy complexion, figure of a woman tattooed on one arm and a ship on the other, rollicking gait; supposed dressed in the stolen coat, striped-tweed trousers, hard black-, felt hat, leaf turned up and usually worn on one side.

Between 11 p.m. on the 18th and 4 a.m. on the 19th ultimo the Royal Hotel, Timaru, was broken into, and the following stolen: A silver Waltham hunting-watch, No. 1227227, case much worn, with steel chain attached, value £1 10s.; a pair of ladies’ leather shoes, size 5, value 55.; a £5 bank-note, three sovereigns, Bs. in silver, and two silk handkerchiefs, one yellow the other red (the latter recovered); the property of Cornelius Hartnell and others, lodgers. Charles Richard Jones has been arrested and committed for trial on the identification of the red handkerchief, but the other property is supposed to be planted or in possession of an accomplice, who is believed to be Charles Stanton Wedge, alias Charles Wood, described at page 171 of Police Gazette , IS9O. He left for Dunedin per s.s. “ Waihora ”on the 23rd ultimo, and may go to Invercargill. Was dressed in an old grey sac-coat and vest, brown trousers, peak cap, and red tie ; may be shaved, except fair moustache. Photographed at New Plymouth on the 12th April, 1890.

Between 5.30 p.m. on the 30th ultimo and 9 a.m. on the Ist instant an attempt was made to break into the Postoffice at Denniston, Westland, by boring about two dozen auger-holes in a part of the floor, 4ft. from the ground. A small crowbar was left behind.

Between 9 p.m. on the Ist and 3.50 a.m. on the 2nd instant the office of Archibald Hall, tramway proprietor, Adelaide Road, Wellington, was entered by means of a duplicate key, and eight conductors’ bags, each containing 10s. in small change, stolen. The empty bags were found in an adjacent street.

Breaking into and stealing from the shop of James Meehan, Makikihi: The stolen articles have been found in possession of Edward Pratley, who has been arrested by Constable 11. Field, Waimate Police, and committed for trial.

About 11.30 p.m. on the 30th ultimo Thomas Geagan was assaulted by two men, in Dunedin, and robbed of one £5 and four £1 bank-notes, 15s. or 16s. in silver, and a depositreceipt on the Bank of New South Wales, Dunedin, for £538. Complainant, a labourer residing in Walker Street, was drunk at the time, and could not identify or give any description of the offenders.

Stolen on the 2nd or 3rd instant, from a passage in the Albion Hotel, Lyttelton, a black-cloth overcoat, rather short, left-hand pocket torn inside, nearly new; value £4 ; the property of John Belcher, of Dunedin. Identifiable. The pockets contained a white woollen scarf with red edges, and some telegrams addressed to complainant.

Stolen between March, 1889, and February last, from the dwelling of Eugene Sullivan, Upper Molcau, King Country, five pairs T hinges and screws, two pairs of window-sashes, panes lOin. by 12in., twenty-four rolls of wall-paper, four reversible locks, four rim ditto, a Masefield’s timber-jack

with rimu stock, cog near top of spear chipped, six lamps, a clock, eight table-cloths, a set of iron wedges and rings, a crowbar, six dozen knives and forks, a carving ditto, three dozen dinner-plates, three dozen small and two dozen soup ditto, two sugar-basins, a white counterpane, anchor pattern, four axes, a pair of hames, a spade, looking-glass, side dish, two dozen cups and saucers, three dozen dessert-spoons, and three dozen tea-spoons ; value £31195. 9d. Complainant left the dwelling unoccupied during the above period, and lived at Rotorua. Timber-jack identifiable.

Stolen between the 6th and Bth instant, from the hut of John Quinn, Sebastopol, Totara, near Oamaru, a doublebarrelled breech-loading gun, 12-bore, nearly new, maker R. Lees, Perth; value £B. Identifiable.

Stolen between the 26th and 30th ultimo, from the dwelling of Alfred John Wadsworth, Garfield Street, Parnell, Auckland, a black diagonal-tweed sac-coat, black-quilted lining, braided down to lower front button, broad collar; value £1 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the sth instant, from the dining-room of the Empire Hotel, Nelson Street, Auckland, a new brown-cloth overcoat, size 6, dark cross-bars rather wide apart, lined with dark itaiian-clotli, brown-bonp buttons, two outside and an inside breast-pocket, jf/fc

Description: Supposed English, a labourer, station-hand or cook, fifty-five years of age, sft. lOin. high, medium build, dark complexion, dark hair beard whiskers and moustache, weak watery eyes; dressed in dark clothes. He was at Balclutha seven or eight weeks ago, hard up, and looking for work. Amos Booth no longer suspected. Complainant’s proper name is Elias William Dixon Gray.. %

Stolen on the 21st or 22nd ultimo, from the hut of Alexander Kinney, Annett’s Bridge, Hyde, Otago, a bed-rug, blue-and-yellow striped; a flannel undershirt, a single grey blanket, two pairs of drawers, one flannel the other cotton ; a blue shirt, red-and-white stripes, soiled with tar and paint; a tweed vest, red white and brown thread; and a towel; value £3 2s. Identifiable. William Matthews, residing in the locality, suspected.

Stolen on the 7th instant, from the Oxford Hotel, Colombo Street, Christchurch, a sac-coat, since recovered; value £2 ; the property of Robert McKee. Suspicion attached to a man, supposed English, about twenty-seven years of age, about sft. 7in. high, medium build, dark complexion, black hair, none on face ; dressed in light-tweed trousers, dark coat, and soft black-felt hat. The coat was sold at Miss McCormick’s second-hand shop, Sydenham, on same date, by a person answering the above description.

Stolen on the 9th instant, from the Timaru Restaurant, Timaru, a gold breast-pin, in the form of a lady’s hand holding a diamond in the fingers ; value £4; the property of Henry Scarf. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, supposed English, twenty-three years of age, sft. 7in. high, medium build, pale features, Roman nose, small fair moustache only ; dressed in light-tweed sacsuit and soft drab-felt hat.
