Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

Stolen during the night of the 13th ultimo, from the bar of the Waikato Hotel, Hamilton East, a small cashbox containing eight £1 notes, about £1 in silver, and three cheques for small amounts; the property of Philip LeQuesnc, licensee; cash-box and cheques were found on the door-step the following morning. Suspicion is attached to Albert LeQuesne, son of complainant, living in the hotel. Description: Eighteen years of age, sft. 7in. high, medium build, light-brown hair, none on face; well known in the Waikato District.

Reported stolen between 6.3 U p.m. on the 20th and 5 a.m. on the 21st ultimo, from the store of Charles John Trapp, Alfrcdton, Wellington District, four or five dark-tweed suits, sizes 3 to 6, “ lot ” on labels attached, value £1 13s. each ; seven trousers and vests similar to suits, labels marked “ hat,” value £1 2s. 6d. each ; a bundle of three dozen flannels, value 4s. 6d. to 6s. 6d. each; seven or eight cotton shirts, some striped red-and-white, and three or four ditto different colours, with collars, value ss. each ; about six Crimean shirts, various colours, value 6s. 6d. each ; about 41b. twist tobacco, value 6s. per pound ; an old silver lever huming-watch, No. 37383, maker unknown, "value £lFlDs. ; a new pigskin-seated saddle with leather girth and one stirrup-iron, pocket where frame sits ripped on one side, value £1 10s.; a pair of old blue blankets, value 10s. ; and CZI .

Stolen between 6 and 10 p.m. on the 14th ultimo, from the shop-door of Henry Sawkins, Victoria Street, Auckland, two pairs of ladies’ elastic-side prunella shoes, marked h/s in ink on soles, by which they can be identified ; value 7s.

Stolen on the 18th ultimo, from the person of Archibald Brown, while asleep in the stable of the Cosmopolitan Hotel, Greymouth, a silver hunting lever watch, No. 119660, maker Ehrhardt, nearly new ; value £6. Identifiable.

Stolen between 9 and 11 a.m. on the 25th ultimo, from the bedroom of Elizabeth Anderson, Coquet Street, Oamaru, a small Japanese cabinet, about Bin. x Bin., one drawer at bottom and two at top, containing a gold arrow-shaped brooch with a ruby set on centre of bar, two small silver! bracelets, engraved respectively “ Lizzie ” and “ Polly,” one side plain the other fancy, and a small oval-shaped silver | brooch with raised fancy-work ; value £2 ss. Identifiable.

Between 6 p.m. on the 24th and 8 a.m. on the 26th ultimo the shop of Robert Walker, plumber, Stuart Street, Dunedin, was broken into, and three pieces of lead about lOin. square, lin. thick, and 251 b. each stolen ; value 10s. each. Identifiable. Entrance gained by breaking a pane of glass in the back window, probably by boys.

Stolen between noon and 8 p.m. on the 2nd instant, from a safe in the shop of George Aldous, tobacconist, Lambton Quay, Wellington, about £3O, consisting of one £5 note, a cheque on the Bank of New South Wales for £2 55., signed “H. Barber,” and the balance in £1 notes. Payment of cheque stopped. Stolen on the 21st or 22nd ultimo, from the dwelling of Margaret Hawkins, Gibson’s Quay, Hokitika, a small blackleather purse with clasp, one compartment, containing a £1 note, bank not known, a Jubilee 2s. piece, Is., and 6d., also jubilee coins and Is. 6d. in silver; purse value Is. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Bridget McLaughlin, residing near complainant, and whose house was searched without effect. She is well known to the district police.

Stolen on the 26th ultimo, at 11 a.m., from a bedroom in the Seacliff Hotel, Seacliff, Dunedin District, a pair of dark-check-tweed trousers, slightly worn, value £1 ; and a grey double blanket, value 18s. ; the property of John Parker, licensee. Trousers identifiable. Suspicion attached to Arthur Armstrong, who stayed at the hotel the previous night and left for Dunedin at 11 next morning. Description: Supposed'English, sft. 6in. or 7in. high, slight build, dark complexion, dark hair, none on face; wore dark sacsuit and soft black-felt hat, carried a swag, looks like a sailor.

Stolen from the verandah of Alfred Smith’s dwelling, Elgin Road, Mornington, Dunedin, on the 28th ultimo, a cane bird-cage in form of a church, containing a mule canary ; value £4. Identifiable.

Between 8 p.m. on the 27th and 8.30 a.m. on the 28th ultimo the shop of James Alexander Haslet, chemist, Newmarket, Auckland, was broken into, and Bs. stolen. Entrance gained through a broken window.

The velveteen skirt was found in her possession ; jacket and bracelet not recovered.

Stolen on the 26th ultimo, from the tent of James Jackson, navvy, Squaretown, near Reef ton, an old £5 note on Union Bank of Australia, and a gold ring, pick and shovel pattern, nearly new ; value £llss. Ring identifiable. John Doherty, residing at Reefton, suspected.

Between 5.50 p.m. on the sth and 8 a.m. on the 6th instant the shop of Wilfred Higgenbottom, cutler, Willis Street, Wellington, was broken into, and the following stolen: A packet containing half a dozen tlnee-bladed pocketknives with buckliorn handles, maker Blyde, value £1 135.; a small white-handled razor, value 55.; and 2s. in coppers. Entrance gained by breaking a pane of glass in the back window and opening the catch.

Stolen between 8 and 9 a.m. on the 4th instant, from a bouse in Leith Street, Dunedin, a pair of ladies’ lace-up boots, value Bs., the property of Martha White ; and a striped merino skirt, value 10s.; belonging to Kate Cober. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Henry Bransgrove, a colonial, nineteen years of age, sft. 6in. high, fair hair, none on face, blue eyes; dressed in black coat and vest, greytweed trousers and cap ; son of a butcher residing in King Street, Dunedin. He stayed in the house the previous night, and brings fowls from Outran! for sale twice a week.

Stolen between 5 and 8 p.m. on the Ist instant, from a bedroom in the Racecourse Hotel, Forbury, near Dunedin, six small white bath-towels, a blackthorn walking-stick, about fin. diameter, a plain brown varnished ditto, and a green-hide riding-whip with leather loop, which has been repaired with black thread ; value £1 10s. ; the property of Daniel Hart, licensee. Whip and blackthorn stick identifiable. Suspicion attached to Alfred Price, who occupied the room. Description: A jockey, about seventeen years of age, sft. high, slender build, fair hair, blue eyes, about 7 stone weight; dressed in blue-serge suit and black fore-and-aft cap ; still in Dunedin, but will probably return to his relatives at Ashburton, where he is well known. Was detected pilfering on a previous occasion, and bears a bad character. His effects were searched without success.
