Collection of Money for Subsistence of Children sent to
Industrial Schools
The Education Department having represented that great difficulty is experienced in collecting the subsis-tence-money for children sent to industrial schools, the Minister in charge of the department has been pleased to order that the police shall in future collect such moneys and pay them in to the nearest Clerk of the Court. In when any person is directed to pay a sum for the maintenance of his or her child or children in an industrial school, the local constable will collect the same weekly .and pay it to the Clerk of the Courts The "police will keep a careful check on these persons, and report their movements from one district to another to the head-quarters of the district to which they have moved or are about to move ; and the Inspector of the district concerned will at once issue the necessary orders for the recovery of arrears and the future payment of sums as they become due.

Rewards
Sergeant P. F. Carlyon and Constable A. Reddell, Gisborne Police, have been awarded £3 each from the Reward Fund for their energy and ability displayed in tracing up a case of arson, in which the offender, J. B. Lane, was sentenced to twelve months’ labour. (91/425.) The following awards have been made to the Christchurch Police for arresting deserters from Her Majesty’s ship “Curapoa:” Constable J. Dillon, £l2; Chief Detective M. O’Connor, £8 ; and £4 each to Detective L. D. Benjamin and Constables T. O’Brien and T. O’Connor. (91/360.)
The sum of £5, equally divided, has been awarded to Constables D. Smart, J. D. Crockatt, and A. Morgan, Ashburton and Methven Police, by Mr. H. Friedlander, for the arrest of James McCrenor for a breach of “The Chattels Transfer Act, 1889.” (91/392.)
The sum of £1 has been awarded by the Customs Department to Sergeant M. D. Stagpoole, Kawakawa Police, for securing the conviction of R. Marshall for a broach of “ The Beer Duty Act, 1880.” (91/152.) The sum of £5 ss. has been awarded by the Clive Road Board to Constable J. Kennedy in recognition of his services in keeping the roads free from wandering cattle. (91/404.) (See Police Gazette , 1891, page 29.) Re conviction of Marco Haravitch and Albert Bartell for smuggling tobacco from the ss. “ Doric ” at Port Chalmerß. The sum of £1 10s. was awarded by the Customs Department to Constable 11. Willis in error; it should have been to Constable Hugh Chisholm. (91/369.)
The sum of £1 10s. lias been awarded by the Customs Department to Constable J. A. Ferguson, Gore Police, for securing convictions under “The Boer Duty Act, 1880.” (91/453.)
