Stealing Otherwise than from the Person or from Dwellings.

A man who gave his name as John Scanlon is charged, on warrant issued by the Patea Bench, with stealing on or about the 22nd ultimo, at Patea, a razor and shaving-brush, a shoemakers’ bench-hammer, and forepart iron ; the property of James Rhodes ; value 10s. 6d.—since recovered. Description : Supposed Irish, an itinerant cobbler, about forty-five years of age, sft. Sin. or Oin. high, medium build, sallow complexion, hazel eyes, dark hair and moustache turning grey, about three weeks’ growth of beard ; wore old grey-tweed paget-coat, faded moleskin trousers, blue-and-white cotton shirt, and black slouched hat; erect gait, dirty appearance, fond of drink, carried a small blue-blanket swag. He was seen on the evening of the 24tli ultimo at Kai-iwi going towards Wanganui on foot, and spoke of seeking employment at a flax-mill. He was in complainant’s employment for a few days.

Stolen on the 14th ultimo, at Whataupoko, near Gisborne, a single-rein bridle with blue forehead-band, plated buckles, and racing-bit ; the property of Thomas Curtis; value 7s. Identifiable.

Stolen about the 23rd ultimo, from a railway-truck at Te Awamutu, a piece of Bin. by 2in. scantling, 20f(i. long ; a 9in. by fin. board, 20ft. long ; and two boards 9in. by Jin., 16ft. long, newly sawn ; the property of John William Ellis; value 3s. 6d. Identification doubtful.

Stolen on the 21st February last, from the waiting-room at the railway-station, Auckland, a parcel containing a pair of woollen bootees, 3 yards of grey or white flannel, three skeins of grey wheeling wool, 12 yards of white calico, 3 yards of drab moleskin, a pair of corsets, 12 yards of homespun slate-coloured dress material, and three dozen buttons to match the dress; the property of W. Meikle; value £1 11s. 9d.

Stolen between the 17th and 21st ultimo, from Otipua Reserve, near Timaru, a saddle and bridle and a set of cart harness; the property of J. T. Warren; value £7 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 26th ultimo, at Nelson, a liver-and-white-coloured Clumber spaniel dog, answers to the name “Dandy;” the property of John Walker; value £25. Identifiable. The dog was seen in Wirth Brothers’ circus ground, Nelson, on the 27th ultimo, and was seen on the 29th ultimo on board the steamer “ Grafton,” by which the circus went to Westport.

Stolen on the 25th or 26th ultimo, from the garden of John Job Holland, City Road, Auckland, a black indiarubber garden hose, between 30ft. and 40ft. long, with nozzle and coupling, two pins broken off the coupling ; value £1 10s. Identifiable.
