The sum of £5 lias been awarded by the Customs Department to Constable Alexander Cruickshank, Dunedin Police, in recognition of his services in connection with the prosecution of Wilson and Co., McGavin and Smith, and J. Briggs, for breaches of “ The Beer Duty Act, 1880.”
The sum of £1 has been awarded by the Customs Department to Acting-Detective William Maddern, Invercargill Police, in recognition of his services in connection with the prosecution of D. J. Kaveney, of Wrey’s Bush, for a breach of “ The Beer Duty Act, 1880.”
The sum of £2 has been awarded from the Reward Fund to District Constable John Patrick Ward, Kamo Police, in recognition of the special services rendered by him in the arrest of Thomas Armstrong, sentenced at the late sittings of the Supreme Court, Auckland, to five years’ penal servitude for indecently assaulting a girl eleven years old.
The sum of £1 has been awarded to Sergeant Thomas O’Grady, Oamaru Police, in recognition of his services in connection with the prosecution of William D’Esther, fined £2 and costs for the illegal sale of liquor.
A record of merit has been noted in favour of Constables Alexander McGilp and William Scfton, Russell Police, in recognition of their energy in connection with the arrest of Daniel Bailey Orchard, sentenced at the late sittings of the Supreme Court, Auckland, to seven years’ penal servitude for forgery and uttering.
A record of merit has been noted in favour of Acting" Detective William Maddern, Invercargill Police, in recognition of the smartness shown by him in the arrest of Charles Lesurer, for stealing £4O from the Gridiron Hotel, Dunedin, for which offence he was sentenced at the late sittings of the Supreme Court, Dunedin, to six months’ labour.
