Stealing Otherwise than from the Person or from Dwellings.

Stolen between 7.30 p.m. and 8.30 p.m. on the 2nd August last, from a letter pillar-box at Okain’s Bay, Canterbury, a letter posted by William Robinson, addressed to the manager of the Union Bank, Lyttelton, containing a £5 note, supposed on Bank of New Zealand; a cheque No. 8189674, dated the 29th July, 1889, for £4 10s., drawn on the Union Bank of Australia, Lyttelton, by J. Milnes in favour of E. W. Harris (this cheque was made out on a cheque form of the Christchurch branch of the bank, and Christchurch struck out and Lyttelton substituted); a cheque No. 20836, dated the 22nd July, 1889, for £lO 10s. 5d., drawn by C. Moore on the Bank of New Zealand, Akaroa, in favour of F. Chapman; a School Committee, Okain’s Bay, cheque, No. 4397, dated the 11th July, 1889, for£l 13s. 3d., on the Bank of New Zealand, Akaroa, drawn by C. Moore in favour of E. W. Harris; a

Walker, one addressed to the Manager, National Bank, Christchurch, containing a crossed cheque No. A 4399, dated the Ist August, 1889, for £l7 ss. 9d., drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Akaroa, by the Okain’s Bay School Committee, and the other a letter from his wife, A. M. Walker, addressed to Mrs. Robinson, Office Road, Christchurch. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 22nd or 23rd ultimo, on board the ship “ Lady Jocelyn,” at Lyttelton, a silver-hunting three-quarter-plate lever watch, “ Wm. Terry, Smithlin’s Lane, City,” on plate, No. 3105, value £5; a silver chain, round-link pattern, thick in centre and tapering towards ends, attached were a sixpenny piece with two hole:: in it, and a fifty-cen-time French or German piece, value Cl ; the property of Alexander Singleton. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to some of the crew of the ship.

Stolen on the 14tli or 15th ultimo, from the garden of James Laird, Glasgow Street, Wanganui, four American Rymer apple-trees, two years old ; value Bs. Identifiable.

Stealing a watch and gold guard at Cobden, the property of Samuel Johnston: The guard has been recovered. It was found on the 20th ultimo in a water-closet near where stolen from.

Stolen on the 23rd or 24tli ultimo, from the yard of James Shepherd, North Street, Timaru, two 4-gallon tins of kerosene oil, branded “Domestic” 888 and trident on the top of the tins ; value 17s.

Stolen on the 21st or 22nd ultimo, from the front of the residence of Oliver Wilton Clayton, Vivian Street, Wellington, a plaster-of-paris image of a Maori, natural colour, about 3ft. high, and about lewt. weight; value £l. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 22nd ultimo, on board the brigantine “ Circe,” at Bluff Harbour, a silver lever hunting-watch, not much worn, maker Ehrliardt, London, No. 116652 ; the property of Ernest Juress; value £5. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to John Collins, a seaman employed on board the vessel. Description : Supposed English, about twenty-seven years of age, sft. Gin. high, active build, sallow complexion, dark eyes, dark hair, clean-shaved except moustache ; wears dark clothes. The vessel left Bluff Harbour on the 23rd ultimo for Lyttelton.

Stolen about the 22nd ultimo, from a shed at Cricklewood, Canterbury, five long-wool sheepskins branded B, and about five long-wool fleeces, one of them very much matted and smeared nearly all over with red ruddle, the fleeces are also branded B ; the property of William G. Inman ; value about £2. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 13th ultimo, from a railway-carriage between Port Chalmers and Dunedin, a nearly-new dark-grey waterproof mackintosh - coat, buttons on collar for cape, check lining ; the property of William McDonnell; value £2. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 17th or 18th ultimo, from the smokehouse or the salthouse of Hellaby Brothers, Chancery Lane, Auckland, five hams, about 151 b. each, newly smoked and cured, “ 18 Augt., 89 ” written in ink on each ; value about £3. Identifiable by ink-mark.

Stolen on the night of the 25th ultimo, from the Blue Peter Gold-mining Claim, Tokatea, Coromandel, a small bag containing about 401 b. of rich specimens ; the property of John Mayne, R. Mullins, and A. Wheelan; value about £SO. Identification doubtful.

Stolen on or about the 28th March last, supposed on board the steamer “ Kina,” between Kaipara and Helensville, a varnished box with black-iron handles, containing two rugs, a bundle of soiled clothing tied up in a towel, two pairs of tweed trousers, one a little worn on left leg, a pair of moleskin trousers, a serge coat and vest, two woollen undershirts, an old pair of cotton drawers, a new pair of cotton drawers, two towels, one large and one small, two pairs of woollen socks, a pair of heavy lace-up boots, a pair of sheepshears, a 2ft. rule with JF cut thereon, and sundry other articles; the property of James Finnagan ; value £7. Nearly all identifiable.

Stolen on the 22nd or 23rd ultimo, at Oliaeawai, Bay of Islands District, from over a saw-pit, a sawyer’s pit-fly measuring G 1 yards of double-width calico, rope-holes about lin. in diameter and Ift. apart worked in sides, two holes of the same size in the centre of both ends to fasten it to the ridge-pole, stained in places with red ochre, a calico-band about Sin. wide sewn at sides; the property of Samuel Coombes ; value £7. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 3rd or 4th August last, from Gummie’s Bush, Southland, a black-and-tan sheep-slut, five years old, a tan spot over both eyes, a little tan on fore legs from breast to knees, from knees to paws white, a very small streak of white down face, a large wart on right leg between shoulder and knee, answers to the name of “ Lady ; ” the property of Alexander Cunningham ; value £5. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 30th ultimo or Ist instant, from the goldmining claim of Kong Fun, Round Hill, near Orepuki, about 2oz. gold ; value £7 15s.

Stolen on the 6th ultimo, believed from the letter-rack in the University, Dunedin, a letter addressed to James M. Beattie, Otago University, Dunedin, containing a cheque for £ls, drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Wellington; the property of James M. Beattie. The cheque was subsequently cashed at the shop of Charles Johnson, draper, Maclaggan Street, by a man, name unknown, who indorsed it J. M. Beattie and T. W. Murray, both of which are forgeries. Description: About twenty - three years of age, sft. Bin. or 9in. high, dark hair, and small dark moustache.
