Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

Edward John St. Edmonds, charged on warrant with stealing money in the St. John Hotel, Wanganui, the property of Edward Hackett, has been arrested by Constable A. Scully, New Plymouth Police, remanded to Wanganui, and discharged for want of sufficient evidence. Ho was rearrested by Sergeant James Anderson, Wanganui Police, and charged with having insufficient lawful means of support, and sentenced to fourteen days’ labour. He is identical with James Paget, suspected of stealing money from the bar of the Ketemarae Hotel, Normanby; the property of Joseph Wilson (see Police Gazette, 1888, page 158) ; and is believed to be identical with Morne Adams Fitzclarence, alias Wilberforce, described in Police Gazette, 1886, page 25, and 1888, page 96.

Peter Jackson is charged with stealing, on the 2nd instant, from the Waverley Hotel, Queen Street, Auckland, a new suit of clothes, value £5, since recovered; the property of John Drummond. Description : A native of the colony, about twenty-three years of age, sft. Sin. or 6in. high, medium build, no hair on face; dressed in blue-serge suit, straw hat, and boots with cloth tops ; looked like a boathand. Identifiable. He pledged tire clothes at Keesing’s pawn office soon after they were stolen.

Between 4 p.m. on the 16tli and 8 a.m. on the 18th ultimo the workshop of Messrs. Sims and Brown, boatbuilders, Customs Street West, Auckland, was broken into, and ten copper bolts, which had been previously used, and about 61b. of copper nails, stolen ; value 16s.

Stolen on the 16tli ultimo, from the person of Thoma s Maher, at the Hill Top Hotel, Barry’s Pass, Little River, between £4 and £5 in silver.

Stolen about the 24th ultimo, from the shop of Joseph Hatch and Co., Dee Street, Invercargill, a 32in. electric corset made by Dr. Scott, value £1 ss. ; and two small bottles of jockey-club perfume, value Is. each. Stolen on the 25th ultimo, from the shop of Reuben Isaacs, Princes Street, Dunedin, a six-chambered pin-fire revolver with plated barrel, rather rusty ; value 15s. Identifiable.

Between the 21st and 27tli ultimo the dwelling of Tom Wright Johnson, situated between Aylesbury and Burnham, Canterbury, was broken into, and the following stolen: A sheet, a pillow-slip, a white blanket with a wide border of a different colour, a mouse-hole in middle near the top edge, which is repaired with white wool, about 101 b. of biscuits, and fib. of tea; value £1 ss. Blanket identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, supposed a German, about forty years of age, sft. Sin. high, medium build, full round face, heavy overhanging eyebrows, not much hair on face ; wore blue-cotton trousers, slovenly gait, dirty appearance. He was seen at the Selwyn Hotel on the afternoon of the 24th ultimo.

Stolen on the 14th ultimo, from the Waiwera Hotel, Waiwera, Auckland District, a book of poems by Milton relative to birthdays, about 6in. long by 4in. wide, bound in brown calf, and gold gilt; the property of Isabella Graham ; value 7s. 6d. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 18th ultimo, from a bedroom in the Waiwera Hotel, Waiwera, Auckland District, a ladies’ gold ring with diamond in gipsy setting; the property of Miss Rav • value £ls. Identifiable.

Stolen about the 20th ultimo, from the whare of George Banks, Ohau, Wellington District, two £5 notes, one on the Colonial Bank of New Zealand, and the other on the Bank of Australasia.

_ Between 9 p.m. on the 15th and 8 a.m. on the 16th "ultimo the shop of Henry Tuck, Victoria Street, Christchurch, was broken into, and about ss. or 6s. in silver, coppers, and tokens stolen.

Between 5.15 p.m. on the 15th and 8 a.m. ou the 16th ultimo the office of Messrs. Johnston, Wood, and Co., corner of Tuam and. Manchester Streets, Christchurch, was broken into, and 3d. in coppers stolen.

About 1 o’clock on the morning of the 24th ultimo the dwelling of David Burnside, Woodside, Auckland District, was burglariously entered, and a double-barrelled breachloading gun, small of stock cracked, and bound with waxed cord, value £5, and two loaves of bread, stolen. Gun identifiable.

Stolen on the 3rd instant, from the dwelling of Edward Jefferd, Owen Street, Wellington, an old black-leather purse with two compartments and clasp, containing 6d. in silver ; the property of Louisa Wilton. Purse identifiable.

Stolen between the 20th January last and the Ist ultimo, from the Occidental Hotel, Masterton, a black-and-brown check-pattern tweed overcoat with cape, striped-tweed lining, slightly worn at the opening at back, a small tear near one corner; the property of Basil Latham ; value £5. Identifiable.

Stolen between the 23rd and 27th ultimo, from the dwelling of J. A. McArthur, Adelaide Road, Wellington, a £5 note and a £1 note.

On the 13th or 14th ultimo the store of William Todd, Otaika, Bay of Islands District, was broken into, and the following stolen : Seven pairs of Mosgiel woollen socks, eight tins of Hellaby Brothers’ preserved meats, 21b. tobacco in small sticks with tin. plates with “ Good luck ” stamped on each, about .five tins of Kaipara mullet, three tins of lobster, and seven tins of herrings ; value about £2 10s. Identification doubtful.

Stolen on the 25th or 26bh ultimo, from the store of William Spencer Whitley, Lower Queen Street, Auckland, a corn-sack, branded W in black, containg 851 b. kauri gum ; value £1 ss. Sack identifiable.

Between 10 a.m. on the 6th and 8 a.m. on the 7th instant an attempt was made to burglariously enter the dwelling of J. C. Nanoarrow, Willis Street, Wellington. All the putty was cut away from a pano of glass in the scullery-window.

Stolen on the 4th instant, from a till in the shop of George Symonds Street, Auckland, a half-crown piece, a twoshilling piece,. two shillings, two sixpences, and a threepenny piece, all with a nick in the milling over the centre of the crown, and ss. unmarked. Marked coins identifiable.
