Stealing Otherwise than from the Person or from Dwellings.

Jack Gallager is charged, on warrant issued by the Hunterville Bench, with the larceny, as a copartner, at Rangitikei, on the 7th ultimo, of a cheque for £4O on the Bank of Australasia, Marton ; the joint property of William Grice, Henry Horne, and James Vickery. Description : A native of Ireland, a bushman and labourer, about forty years of age, about sft. Sin. high, slight build, fair complexion, dark-brown hair beard whiskers and moustache, moustache heavy ; wore dark-tweed suit, large black soft-felt hat, silver watch, and a silver chain, long-link pattern. Ho was a patient in the Wanganui Hospital three or four months ago, and is well known to the navvies in the North Island. Offender and complainants had a contract from Mr. Price Jones for felling bush, and received the cheque in payment for the work done. The offender was sent to Marton with the cheque to cash it and bring back the money. He cashed the cheque, but has not returned with the amount or forwarded it. He is supposed to heve come to Wellington with the intention of going to the Middle Island.

Henry Boland Rowlatt is charged, on warrant issued by the Masterton Bench, with the larceny as a bailee, on the 28th ultimo, at Masterton, of a cheque for £5 on the

Bank of New Zealand, Masterton, the property of Phillip M. Reynolds. Description: English, an architect, about thirty years of age, sft. 9in. or lOin. high, stout build, fair fresh complexion, light-brown hair, nearly bald on top of head, clean-shaved except thin light moustache and small side whiskers, a large space between two upper front teeth ; dressed in grey-tweed suit and a grey-tweed fore-and-aft hat, or a brown hard-felt hat; walks quickly, smart active appearance. He was in business as an architect at Masterton, and called for tenders for the erection of a cottage at Rangitumau. Complainant tendered for the building of the cottage, and on the 23rd ultimo handed the offender his tender with the cheque for £5, but his tender was not accepted. Offender cashed the cheque at the Bank of New Zealand on the 28th ultimo, and left Masterton on the same daj' for Wellington, and has not since been heard of.

£SO Reward. —Larceny by Trick : Wanted, charged with stealing, on the 9th instant, $2,485 in American greenbacks and Canadian notes, from a bullion-dealer, in this city, consisting of American notes, $1,704 (pinned in seventeen packets of 100 each, chiefly 20s, 10s, and ss) ; American gold, $295 ; Canadian notes, S4BO (consisting of a SIOO note, and the remainder in 10s, ss, and smaller); and silver, $6: total English value, £510; by a man calling himself Father McDonald, who stated that he was taking a number of youths to Canada, and wanted between £SOO and £6OO in American and Canadian money, and requested that that amount be brought to the presbytery of a Roman Catholic church in this city, which was done, and the money was handed to the so-called Father McDonald, ho then leaving for the purpose of obtaining from the rector in charge the £5lO in exchange, but instead of doing so decamped, and upon inquiry it was ascertained that he was not known to any one connected with the presbytery. Ho is about thirtyfive to forty years of age, sft. 9in. or lOin. high, pale-looking, rather long face, square build, clean-shaved, high cheek-bones, heavy dark eyebrows, small piece of flesh in the centre of upper lip, thick lips, large mouth, spoke with a slight American accent, and was dressed as a priest, and carried a small black bag. Please cause every possible search and inquiry to be made at all likely places. The above reward wiil be paid by Messrs. Thomas Cook and Son, of Lord Street, in this city, upon the arrest and conviction of the thief, together with the recovery of the money stolen, or in proportion thereto. Stolen between the 25Lh ultimo and sth instant, from a shed at Somes Island, Wellington, a pair of oars about 12ft. long, blades painted white and bound with hoop-copper, about twenty-five fathoms of manila rope, and two blocks and pulleys (one single and one double), the property of the Government; also a pair of oars about 14ft. long, blades painted white and bound with hoop-copper, a split about 18in. long in the blade of one, the property of William Achison; all value about £3. Oars identifiable. Petone fishermen suspected.

Stolen about the 25th ultimo, from a building in course of erection in E Street, Timaru, a glaziers’ diamond, value 12s. 6d.; a fringe scissors, value 3s. 6d.; three paint-brushes, value 9s. 6d. ; a size-brush, value 6s. 6d.; and a paperhangers’ brush with TWF marked on handle, value 2s. 6d.; the property of Thomas William Fyfe. Identifiable.

Stolen on the Ist or 2nd instant, at Paikakarild, Wellington District, a nearly-new block-tin wash-hand basin, in diameter and 4in. deep ; the property of James Davidson \ f value 2s. Identification doubtful.

Stolen on the Ist instant, from Vivian Street, Wellington, a brown-and-white St. Bernard dog with dark-brown ears and blaze down face, two months old; the property of O, W. Clayton; value £l. Identifiable.

Stolen between the Ist and 20tli ultimo, from near the raihvay-works at Hastwell, Wellington District, two timberjacks, no maker’s name, but are supposed to have one of the following numbers on the spear and stub where the handle fits, 7,8, 11, or 12, the handle of one is broken close to the socket, and will have to be repaired by a blacksmith before it can bo used; the property of Martin Danaher; value £7 10s. each. Identifiable. Mr. Danaher guarantees £5 reward on conviction of the offender.

Stolen on the 21st ultimo, at Norman by, fourteen £1 notes ; the property of James Bailey. Mr. Bailey states that he lost his pocketbook containing the money, a dishonoured cheque, &c., between the railway-station and his shop, and when the pocketbook was found on the following day near the Normanby Hotel the money was missing from it. This is considered a doubtful case.

Stolen between tbe 10th November, 1887, and tlio 12th ultimo, from a box at Napier, or on board the steamer “ Maitai,” between Napier and Wellington, or on board the steamer “ Huia ” between Wellington and Wanganui, a gun-case covered with black American cloth, JO painted on lid, and “J. Ostle, Lemars, lowa, U.5.A.,” written on a card attached, containing a double-barrelled breech-loading fowling-piece, No. 12 bore, maker Parker, Chicago, value £l2, and a Winchester rifle, 22-repeater, No. 44 bore, maker Parker, Chicago, value £7 ; also an American six-chambered revolver, value £1; a silver scarf-pin, round flat head about the size of a sixpence, a cross engraved thereon, value 65.; and a gold scarf-pin, round flat head about the size of a shilling, scroll-work round edge, a small diamond in centre, value £1 2s. ; the property of Jonathan Ostle. All identifiable.

Stolen between the 11th and 20th ultimo, from the stable of Michael Erskine, Totara Flat, Westland, a colonial-made saddle, torn on off side near crupper-staple, relined, and two dark-red web-girths; value £2. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to James Creagan, alias Treacy, Irish, a labourer, about twenty-eight years of age, about sft. Gin. or 7in. high, medium build, fair complexion and hair, light moustache only ; wore grey-tweed coat and hat, and corduroy breeches and leather leggings, hersey appearance. He is supposed to have gone towards Greymouth.

Stolen about the 20th October last, on board the barque “ Conference,” at Lyttelton, a gold hunting three-quarter-plate watch, American make, maker’s name not known, No. 3290, the outside of the case looks like brass, caused through being in salt water; and a 9-carat gold chain, round-link pattern, the ring connecting the chain to the watch was broken, and a steel ring substituted ; the property of Edwin Lusher ; value £l6. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 22nd or 23rd ultimo, from the stable of the Queen’s Head Hotel, Roxburgh, an old saddle, medium size, a small patch on near side of seat scratched or cut, no rings on front, a small strap supposed on front, rusty stirrupirons, in good repair; the property of James Smith; value £2. Identifiable.

Stolen in November last, from Hastwell railway-works, Wellington District, four coils of No. 6 black-enamelled fencing-wire ; the property of Martin Danaher ; value £2los. Identification doubtful.

Stolen between the Ist and 6th ultimo, from the stable of Richard Ford, Otautau, Southland, a dandriff brush and two leading-chains of a dray, a large hook at the end of one; value 7s. Identification doubtful.

Stolen between the Ist and 6tli ultimo, at Otautau, Southland, the hand-lever of a double-furrow plough, bent near the end that connects with the plough ; the property of Denis Crow ; value 15s. Identifiable.

Stealing a box containing £l5O in silver, from the Greatford Railway-station, the property of the Bank of New Zealand : William Finlay, arrested by Constable John Coyle, Bull’s Police, was sentenced on the 28tli ultimo, at the District Court, Wanganui, to twelve months’ labour for the offence. The stolen money has not been recovered.

Supposed stolen between 4.20 p.m. on the 6th and 10 a.m on the Bth ultimo, from a railway-wagon, at Auckland, or between there and Te Awamutu, a box containing 20£lb. of tobacco, double thick pocket-pieces weighing seven to the pound, each piece bearing a yellow elliptical label, inscribed “ David Dunlop, Successor of D. B. Tennant and Co., DERBY, Petersburg, VA;” the property of the Government ; value £5 ss. Box supposed identifiable.

Supposed stolen on the 9tli ultimo, from a railway-wagon at Auckland, or between there and Te Kuiti, a square box marked like JDH in black, containing 301 b. of tobacco, Derby brand, flat pocket-pieces, seven pieces to the pound ; the property of the Government; value £7 12s. Gd. Box identifiable.

Stolen between the Ist and 10th instant, from a shod in Hill Street, Wellington, an oil-drum with RM and star painted in white on top, containing 5 gallons of raw linseed oil; the property of Frederick Robin ; value 17s. 6d. Identifiable.

Stolen during November last, from a new building in Marjoribanks Street, Wellington, a packet of ultramarine blue paint, about 21b. of black paint in a copper tin, two square 1-gallon tins containing 2 gallons of turpentine, a round tin with RM on top containing 561 b. of red lead, a quantity of scrim, tacks, and tape, putty and white lead taken out of kegs, and raw and boiled oils taken out of drums ; a square tin, with “ Manders, Varnish Maker,” on a green label thereon, containing a gallon of terrabine ; and two round tins, with handle and patent lid, each containing 141 b. of yellow ochre and 141 b. of burnt umber; the property of Frederick Robin; value about £7. The tins of ochre and umber identifiable, but the identification of the tin of terrabine is doubtful.

Stolen on the 3rd instant, from the coat-pocket of Peter Taylor, at Sumner, near Christchurch, a pocketbook containing two £1 notes and 4s. 6d. in silver. The pocketbook was subsequently found on the same day on the Sumner beach, but the money was missing from it.

Stolen on the 14tli ultimo, from off a horse at Clarkeson’s Run, Harewood Road, Christchurch District, a very long brown-check-tweed overcoat, slightly worn at sleeves, “ New Zealand Clothing Factory ” on tape at collar, dark-bone buttons, value £1 55.; and a ncarly-new small black-handled whip with long lash, value Is. 6d.; the property of Edward Higgs. Coat identifiable ; identification of whip doubtful.

Stolen on the 21st or 22nd ultimo, at Mount Roskill, near Auckland, eighteen fowls, about two months old, mixed breeds, black Spanish and Langshangs, &c.; the property of Frank Nicholas Andrews ; value 15s.

Stolen on the sth or 6th instant, from the clothes-line of Harry Price, at St. Albans, Christchurch, a black and mauve shirt, a pair of men’s swansdown drawers, a girls’ flannel singlet, and two pairs of women’s stockings (one pair black and the other dark grey); value 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the sth or 6th instant, from the clothes-line of Robert McClure, St. Albans, Christchurch, a pair of men’s corded cotton drawers, and a Crimean shirt with red and white stripes and white square spots; value 13s. Identifiable.
