Charles James is charged, on warrant issued by the Christchurch Bench, with forging and uttering a cheque for £2 to William Young, Garrick Hotel, Colombo Street, Christchurch, on the sth ultimo. Description: English, a groom and gardener, between forty-five and fifty years of age, about sft. Sin. or 9in. high, dark complexion, dark hair, dark bushy beard whiskers and moustache turning grey, walks very awkwardly, as if his feet w'ere tender; dressed in dark-tweed sac-coat, small check-tweed trousers, and black-felt hat. He was at one time employed as a wardsman in the Dunedin Hospital, and "was also employed in a livery-stable at Oamaru. The cheque is drawn on the Union Bank of Australia, and purports to be signed by James H. Mclntosh.

William Ross is charged, on warrant issued by the Geraldine Bench, with uttering a forged cheque for £l7 18s. to Thomas Markham, at Geraldine, on the 25th ultimo. Description : Supposed English, twenty-two years of age, sft. 9in. high, slight build, dark complexion, brown eyes, heavy dark eyebrows, black or very dark hair, slight dark moustache, no whiskers, longish features ; dressed in darkbrown and black-check suit, and usually wears a light-grey tweed-cap; active appearance. He knocks about among racehorses. The cheque is on the Colonial Bank, Christchurch, and purports to be drawn by George Edward Fisher in favour of Mr. W. Ross. Offender left Orari on the 25th ultimo by express-train for Christchurch.

James Buckley is charged with a breach of section 9 of “ The First Offenders’ Probation Act, 1886,” in not reporting himself to James Donaldson, Probation Officer, Addington,

on the 24th ultimo. Dscription: A native of Ireland, a labourer, thirty-nine years of age, sft. high, list, weight, medium build, sandy complexion and hair, lightblue eyes, large mouth, a small wart on left side of cheek near nose. He was convicted of larceny at the Supreme Court, Christchurch, on the 9th April last, and sentenced to three years’ probation, and ordered to pay £lO towards the costs of prosecution, in instalments of 15s. per month, and to report himself to the Probation Officer, at Addington, on the fourth Monday of each month. He failed to report himself on the 24th ultimo, and is also five months in arrears with his payments. He was last seen on the road between Waiau and Kaikoura, and said that he was going to Blenheim. The Probation Officer requests that he be rearrested and brought back to Addington Prison, as provided for in section 12 of the First Offenders’ Probation Act.

About 8 p.m. on the 7th instant a stone was maliciously thrown through the sitting-room window of the residence of George Smith, Drummond Street, Wellington, breaking a pane of glass; value 15s.

About 3 p.m. on the 14th instant a stone was maliciously thrown through a window of the 2.30 p.m. passenger-train from Wellington to Plimmerton when about a quarter of a mile north of Johnsonville Railway-station, breaking one of the carriage-windows; value 6s. ; the property of the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company.

Isaac Jonas is charged, on warrant issued at Melbourne, with fraudulent insolvency. Description: A native of London, a Jew, fifty years of age, sft. 3in. high, 14 stone weight, large nose, hazel eyes, dark auburn hair moustache and whiskers. He is believed to have about £3,000 with him. He will likely make for San Francisco. A sharp look-out is directed to be kept for him. His brother is ex-Mayor of Timaru.
