Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

(See Police Gazette, 1885, page 127, and 1886, page 71.) The warrant issued by the Dunedin Bench for the arrest of James Exley, for stealing a purse and money from the dwelling of King Lee, at Anderson’s Bay, has been cancelled, on account of the prosecutor having left the colony.

James Bloomfield is charged, on warrant issued by the Auckland Bench, with breaking into the dwelling of James Cartmill, Auckland Domain Garden, about 8 p.m. on the 3rd March last. Description: English, a gardener, sixty-three years of age, sft. 4in. high, square build, swarthy complexion, brown eyes, grey hair, grey beard whiskers and moustache worn full; dressed in short grey-tweed paget-coat, light corduroy trousers, no vest, and black soft hat. He was sentenced at Auckland, on the 3rd January, 1876, to five years’ penal servitude for stealing in a dwelling, and on the 3rd April, 1882, to seven years’ penal servitude for burglary. (See Police Gazette, 1879, page 213, and 1887, page 149.) He is supposed to have gone to Otahuhu.

Patrick Loughran is charged, on warrant issued by the Napier Bench, with breaking into the warehouse of Robert Holt, Thackeray Street, Napier, on or about the 16tli March last, and stealing twelve door locks and keys, two dozen patent sash-fasteners, and two dozen sash-pulleys, value about £4 10s., since recovered. Description: A native of the North of Ireland, a cooper, forty-one years of age, sft. sm. high, medium build, fair complexion, light-brown hair and whiskers, hair on front of chin and on centre of upper lip very light colour resembling grey, beard whiskers and moustache trimmed, bald on top of head; dressed in dark fancy worsted morning coat and vest about half worn, coarse brown-tweed trousers, black soft-felt hat with low crown, and elastic-side boots ; when walking twists his left foot in a peculiar manner. He was discharged from Lyttelton Gaol on the 12th March last, after undergoing a sentence of five years’ penal servitude for breaking into and stealing in a warehouse. (See Police Gazette, 1888, page 68.) Supposed gone to Gisborne, Auckland, or Wellington.

(See Police Gazette, 1888, page 90.) The gun stolen from the tent of Bernt Berg, at Eketahuna, has been recovered. It was found by Constable Thomas Leitch, Taradale Police, in the possession of Charles Gray, of Moawlianga, who purchased it in September or October last from George Ewart. Ewart was at Eketaliuna on the Bth instant.

Stolen on the 10th or 11th instant, from the dwelling of John Clarke Seymour, Ridgeway Street, Wanganui, eight £1 notes, two sovereigns, and 15s. in silver.

On the 3rd instant the hut of John McDonald, Ardmore Station, near Tapanui, was broken into, and a box therein broken open and seven £1 notes, a half-sovereign, and 14s. in silver stolen.

On the 26th ultimo the whare of William Gough, Kumeu, Auckland District, was broken into, and a sack marked “ William Gough, Kumeu,” in large letters with black paint, containing about 1151 b. of scraped kauri gum, stolen ; value £1 15s. Sack identifiable.

Stolen on the 13th ultimo, from the dwelling of James Craig, Hunterville, a £5 note, sixpence in silver, and twopence in coppers.

Stolen on the sth instant, from a bedroom in the Anchor Hotel, Wanganui, two £lO notes; the property of John McLaren.

Stolen on the 9th instant, from the shop of Jemy Wong Lee, Taranaki Street, Wellington, about £3 in silver and coppers.

Between 6.30 a.m. on the 6th and 8 a.m. on the 7th instant the shop of George Applegate, Okaiawa, near Normanby, was broken into and about lib. tobacco and two small packages of cigars, value 10s., stolen.

Stolen on the 14th instant, from the shop of George Jones, Thorndon Quay, Wellington, an engineers’ iron racket-

brace, round handle about lin. in diameter and 15in. long, the part which holds the drill is about 6in. long and 2in. thick, and tapers slightly at the top and bottom, in the centre of the piece which holds the drill is a cog-wheel which is turned by the handle when drilling, all about 101 b. weight; value £1 ss. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 10th instant, from the dwelling of Alexander Yule, The Camp, Featherston, 9s. in silver, a grey Crimean shirt, check-pattern with dark stripe, value 10s. 6d. ; a greyflannel shirt, value 4s. 6d. ; an old pair of brown-cotton drawers, value 4s. 6d; and a pair of knitted socks, value 3s. Identifiable except money. A warrant has been issued by the Featherston Bench for the arrest of a man, name unknown, for this offence. Description: A Dane, about twentytwo years of ago, sft. 7in. high, fair hair and complexion, no hair on face ; dressed in dark coat, brown trousers, and soft dark-felt hat; carried a blue-blanket swag tied with a red band. He went towards Lower Valley, Martinborough.

Between 5 p.m. on the 2nd and 7 a.m. on the 3rd instant the railway-station, Te Aroha, Tauranga District, the property of the Government, was broken into, and the safe removed from the office and taken about 33 yards away into the scrub, broken open, and two £1 notes, a halfsovereign, £6 13s. in silver, and 2s. in coppers stolen. A sledge-hammer and two pieces of iron used in breaking open the safe were taken from Cannell’s blacksmith’s shop, near the station; £2 of the stolen silver was found at the place where the safe was broken open.

Stolen between 10 p.m. on the 6th and 7 p.m. on the Bth instant, from the whare of A. Buckley, Leeston, a blackleather pocketbook with four compartments, “ A. Buckley ” written on inside flap, containing three £1 notes and Bs. in silver.. Pocketbook identifiable.

On the 7th instant the dwelling of Neil Henderson, Waikaia Flat, Waikaia, was broken into, and the following stolen : Three £1 notes, a plain gold ring, value £1; a silver brooch with pin, value £1; and £lb of tobacco. Identification of ring and brooch doubtful.

Stolen about the Ist ultimo, from a bedroom in the Central Hotel, Lambton Quay, Wellington, a gold brooch, about lin. broad and ljin. long, comes to a point at bottom, with a thread of gold-fringe pendant, two pearls set in it about lin. apart; the property of Jane Ormsby; value £4. Identifiable.

Between the 9th and 15th instant the dwelling of Allan Tolmie, Glenlin, near Kereru, Hawke’s Bay District, was broken into, and a maroon-leather case, lined with blue velvet, containing a nickel-plated aneroid, a little longer than a large-sized watch, stolen; value £2 10s. Identification doubtful.

Stolen on the 17th ultimo, from the shop-door of Thomas Austin, Lyttelton, a plain-blue black-cloth overcoat, size 4; value £1 ss. Identifiable.
