Miscellaneous Information.

Police Officers dispensed with. Police Department, Wellington, 10th April, 1888. His Excellency the Governor has been pleased to dispense with the services of the under-mentioned officers, on reduction of the police force, at the expiration of the leave granted them on retirement, viz., 30th June next: — Inspector, first class, Bobert Clarke Shearman. Inspector, first class, William Henry James. Inspector, Alfred Buckley. Inspector, third class, Bobert Bullcn. Tiios. FEBGUS.

Discharged on Compensation. First-class Sergeant Alexander Wilson, No. 43, Constable Patrick William Walsh, No. 112. Constable James Smith 80110, No. 145. Constable Hare Takerei, No. 150.

Reivards. The sum of 10s. has been awarded by Mr. W. T. Garratt, Vivian Street, Wellington, to Constable Cecil B. Seymour, Wellington Police, in recognition of his services in discovering the person who broke one of Mr. Garratt’s windows.

The sum of £2 each has been awarded to Constables John Burrows and Hans P. Basmussen, Cromwell Police, in recognition of their services in connection with the detection and prosecution of Elizabeth Morris, fined £2O and costs for sly grog-selling, and the liquors seized confiscated.

The sum of £1 has been awarded from the Beward Fund to Constable Cecil B. Seymour, Wellington Police, in recognition of his praiseworthy action in stopping a runaway horse, with cart attached, at great personal risk.

The sum of £2 each has been awarded to Constable J. W. Moar and Native Constable Piri Baiti, Mangonui Police, in recognition of their services in connection with the prosecution of John Denny, fined £3O and costs on two charges of sly grog-selling.

The sum of £SO has been awarded by the Wellington Fire Underwriters’ Association to Detective William L. Chrystal, Wellington Police, in recognition of the skill and attention shown by him in connection with the arrest and prosecution of Beubin Hind and John Henry George Collins Dunkin, sentenced at the late sittings of the Supreme Court, Wellington, to twenty-one years’ and seven years’ penal servitude respectively for arson.

A record of merit has been noted in favour of Constable Joseph West for zeal and ability displayed by him in investigating a case in which Thomas, James, and Mary Jane Scott were charged with arson at German Flat, Waitahuna.

Committal of Children to Reformatories, dc. The Hon. the Minister of Justice directs that, in all cases where application may be made for the committal of children to reformatories or industrial schools, sufficient notice be given to the local body which may be called upon to defray
