Samuel McSweeney is charged, on warrant issued by the Timaru Bench, with having, on the 10th December last, at Timaru, uttered a forged cheque for £9 to Josiah Ballantyne and Co. Description : A native of the north of Ireland, a labourer and ploughman, twenty-four years of age, about sfb. 6in. high, rather stout build, slightly bow-legged, dark-brown hair worn short, no hair on face except dark moustache, rather thick lips, mark of cut on left arm; dressed in darkworsted paget-coat and vest, greyttweed trousers, soft blackfelt hat, sometimes wears a white-straw hat with black band ; respectable appearance. He was sentenced at Timaru on the 25th November last to fourteen days’ labour for larceny. (See Police Gazette, 1887, page 253.) The cheque is on the Bank of New Zealand, Timaru, and purports to be drawn by William Angland in favour of William Angland, and was indorsed by the offender in that name. He purchased six shirts, three collars, three pairs of socks, and a tie at complainant’s shop, and in payment tenderedothe forged cheque, receiving £7 9s. 9d. change.

William J. McCavana is charged, on warrant issued by the Wellington Bench, with embezzling the sum of 10s. on the sth October last, and the sums of 6s. and 10s. respectively on the sth December last, at Wellington ; the property of Henry Fielder, by whom he was employed as clerk and

collector. Description : A native of Belfast, a clerk, about thirty years of age, sft. Gin. high, medium build, fresh complexion, dark hair, clean-shaved except moustache; dressed in dark sac-coat and vest, and tweed trousers; respectable appearance. He is supposed to have gone to Christchurch. There are other similar charges pending against him.

A man, who gave his name as W. Jones, which is supposed to be a fictitious name, is charged, on warrant issued by the Christchurch Bench, with having, on the 21st December last, at Christchurch, obtained an overcoat and a pair of trousers from Richard Leaver by false representations. Description: Twenty-eight or thirty years of age, sft. Sin. high, medium build, brown hair, clean-shaved except moustache ; dressed in dark-check-tweed coat and vest, edges bound, two buttons on each sleeve at wrists, light-coloured trousers, and light boots with cloth fronts; said he was a gardener. Identifiable. He falsely represented that he was employed as gardener on Balmoral Station.

At 5 o’clock on the morning of the 15th ultimo, while a dance was being held in the Working-men’s Club, Eketahuna, the property of Maurice Kelliher, a stone was maliciously thrown at one of the windows, damaging it to the extent of ss.

At 11 p.m. on the 3rd ultimo a man, name unknown, of whom no description can be obtained, uttered to Michael Brearsley, Hobson Street, Auckland, a gilt sixpence as a half-sovereign, in payment for a box of strawberries, receiving 9s. Id. change.

On the morning of the 4th ultimo a man, name unknown, uttered a gilt sixpence as a half-sovereign to James Hoffey, boardinghouse-keeper, Hobson Street, Auckland. Description : Supposed English, about twenty-seven years of age, sft. lOin. high, slight build, dark complexion, dark hair and beard worn short. He was accompanied by a man, about forty years of age, sft. Tin. or Bin. high, medium build, round face, dark complexion, brown hair beard whiskers and moustache ; wore dark-tweed suit and black-felt hat; they looked like gum-diggers. They stopped two days at Mr. lioffey’s boardinghouse, and left there together.

John Neilson is charged, on warrant issued by the Lyttelton Bench, with having, at 10.30 p.m. on the 16th ultimo, at Lyttelton, unlawfully stabbed Emill Erikson in the back with a sheath-knife. Description : A Russian Fin, a sailor, twenty-two years of age, sft. llin. high, medium build, stoops slightly, fair complexion and hair, no hair on face except slight white moustache, | HANNA - 1 tattooed on back of one of hands. When last seen wore dark paget-coat, dark trousers, small-check pattern, and white shirt, no vest; usually dresses very respectably and carries an umbrella; is of very quiet manner when not excited ; speaks English imperfectly. He was a member of the Salvation Army at Lyttelton, and at the time the offence was committed he was a seaman on board the barque “ Elizabeth Graham.” The wound inflicted is a serious one, but not considered

dangerous. Since the offence was committed, his box on board the “ Elizabeth Graham ” was broken open and all his clothing taken away. A pair of nearly-new blankets with red stripe are also missing. It is believed that he left Lyttelton on the night of the lGth ultimo. Photograph in Commissioner’s office.

Leonard Price is charged, on warrant issued by the Ashburton Bench, with assaulting Constable Garrett Fitzgerald while in the execution of his duty, at Ashburton, on the 24th November last. Description: A native of the colony, a horse-breaker, twenty-two years of age, about sft. Yin. high, stout build, broad shoulders, broad features, fair complexion, fair hair, and very small fair moustache ; pleasant expression ; generally wears tweed sac-coat and vest, and black hat. Constable Fitzgerald arrested a brother of offender’s and another man for fighting, when the offender caught the constable round the neck and threw him, rescuing his brother, who made his escape, but who has since been rearrested and convicted.

Frank Arthur Gould, charged on warrant with embezzling money, the property of the New Zealand Government : There are two colours supposed to bo blue and brown—in one of the offender’s eyes, which are different colours to the other eye.

John Healy is charged, on warrant issued by the Wellington Bench, with having, on the 21st July and the 6th August last, at Eketahuna, forged the name of George Buckley to two receipts for the sums of 16s. and Bs. Description: A native of Otago, a stockman, &c., thirty-seven years of age, 6ft. high, medium build, fresh complexion, light-brown hair, sandy beard whiskers and moustache ; when last seen wore blue-serge sac-suit and round hard black hat. He was a constable stationed at Eketahuna when the offences were committed. He resigned his appointment in the force on the 31st October last, and soon after went to Dunedin by steamer, accompanied by his wife. He is also charged, on warrant issued by the Wellington Bench, with having, on the 9tli March and the 9th April last, at Eketahuna, forged the name of William Waterson to two receipts for the sum of Bs. each.

William Brown is charged, on warrant issued by the Waipawa Bench, with having, on the 18th June last, at Waipawa, while acting as secretary and treasurer to the Abbotsford Lodge of Oddfellows, embezzled the sum of £1 155., the property of Martin Collett and others. Description : Scotch, a blacksmith, forty-seven years of age, sft. 4in. or Sin. high, medium build, florid complexion, dark-brown hair beard whiskers and moustache; dressed in dark-tweed suit and hard felt hat. He is supposed to have gone to Melbourne.

Between the Ist and Bth ultimo four of the tombstones in the cemetery at Alexandra South were maliciously damaged to the extent of 15s. The stones were chipped and scratched as if with a knife.
