The sum of £3 has been awarded to Constable Charles Hogg, Kamo Police, in recognition of his services in connection with the detection and prosection of Matthew Whitelaw, fined £5 and costs for sly grog-selling. Liquors, value about £IOO, seized by the constable, were confiscated.

The sum of £1 has been awarded to Constable Nathaniel Millar, Dunedin Police, for the arrest of Marcus Warnke, a deserter from the brig “ Astrea.”

A record of merit has been noted in favour of Constable Walter H. Haddrell, Christchurch Police, in recognition of the energy and perseverance displayed by him in the prosecution of J. P. Barr, charged with breaches of “ The Branding Act, 1880.”

Instructions for Guidance of Netv Zealand Police Force in connection with Offences which may be dealt with by Borough By-lazvs. 1. Arm offences for which provision is made by any Borough or County Council by-law may be dealt with under such by-law, notwithstanding that the same is also an offence recognised by statute, provided always that information for offences against the person, and those mentioned in sections 19 to 25 inclusive of “ The Police Offences Act, 1884,” shall in all cases be laid under statute. 2. When any act or default is an offence under statute, and is also an offence by virtue of any by-law, it will be the duty of the police to prosecute; and they may, subject to the above section, lay the information under the by-law, obtaining first a general authority from the municipal or other authorities to prosecute in such cases. 3. When any particular act or default is constituted an offence by virtue of a by-law of any Borough or County Council or other corporate body duly empowered to make by-laws, but such act or default is not recognised by statute as an offence, officers in charge of police districts will use their discretion as to whether they will lay informations and prosecute under the general authority previously mentioned, or require the municipal authorities to take the initiatory steps in such prosecution. With reference to the notice in Gazette No. 23, of the 9th ultimo, and circular No. 31, of the 13th instant, regarding James Harkins, attention is drawn to the Queensland Police Gazette, of the 19th ultimo, page 380, by which it will be seen that the offender was convicted in 1885 and 188 G of housebreaking and other offences, in New South Wales, under the name of James Robinson.
