Deserting Wives and Families, &c.

James Simpson is charged, on warrant issued by the Oamaru Bench, with deserting his wife and two children, at Livingstone, since the 21st ultimo. Description: Scotch, a labourer, thirty years of age, sft. 7in. high, medium build, fresh complexion, fair hair beard whiskers and moustache ; dressed in old grey-tweed coat, coloured-moleskin trousers, and black soft felt hat. He is supposed to have gone to Dunedin,

Thomas Cleghorn is charged, on warrant issued by the Hampden Bench, with failing to provide his wife and throe children with adequate means of support, at Hampden, since the 22nd December last. Description : English, a saddler, about forty years of age, sft. 6in. or 7in.high, stout build, fresh complexion, auburn hair, reddish beard whiskers and moustache ; dressed in dark coat, grey-tweed trousers and vest, and hard black-felt hat. He drives a trap covered with white calico through the country, and was last heard of going towards Cromwell. He is well known in the Naseby and Wanaka Districts.

James Arnal, charged on a warrant with refusing to contribute towards the support of his illegitimate child by Jane Jackson, has been arrested by Constable Frederick Beattie, Roslyn Police.

Pierce Cazneau is charged on warrant of commitment to Wellington Gaol for twenty-four hours’ labour, issued by the Wellington Bench, in default of paying ss. fine and 13s. costs for keeping an unregistered dog. Description: English, a photographer, about thirty years of age, sft. 3in. high, medium build, fresh complexion, blue eyes, brown hair, fair whiskers and moustache. He is supposed to have gone to Sydney.

Thomas Robinson is charged on warrant of commitment to Dunedin Goal for fourteen days’ labour, issued by the Dunedin Bench, in default of paying £3 fine and £2 ss. costs for assaulting John Brown, at Dunedin, on the 14th ultimo. Description: A native of the colony, a painter by trade, twenty-three years of age, sft. Sin. high, medium build, florid complexion, fair hair, little if any hair on face ; wore dark-tweed suit. He is supposed to have left Dunedin on the 31st ultimo, and to have gone into the country in search of employment.

Charles Hanson, charged on warrant of commitment to gaol for fourteen days’ labour, in default of paying £2 fine and £1 3s. 6d. costs for assaulting his wife at South Dunedin, and on a warrant of commitment to gaol for failing to find a security in £25 to keep the peace for twelve months, has been arrested by Detective Robert Neill, Christchurch Police.

George Stokes is charged, on warrant issued by the Christchurch Bench, with deserting his wife and family, at Christchurch, since the 6th instant. Description: English, a carpenter, about forty-five years of age, sft. 2in. high, slight build, fresh complexion, dark-blue eyes, thin straight nose, top off front teeth, fair hair almost grey, mark of tumour on head, on which there is no hair, no hair on face except fair moustache; dressed in light-tweed coat, dark-tweed trousers, and hard black-felt hat.
