Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

Stolen on the 21st ultimo, from the bar of the Waverlev Hotel, Moray Place, Dunedin, a ladies’ silver hunting Geneva watch, No. 4352; the property of Mary Williamson; value £2. Identifiable. The watch was pledged at the pawn office of Moss Moss, George Street, Dunedin, on the day it was stolen, by a man who gave his name as Thomas Johnson, which is supposed to be a fictitious name. Description: About thirty years of age, sft. 6in. high, medium build, cleanshaved except small fair moustache. Identification doubtful. The watch was redeemed on the 25th ultimo before the loss of it was reported to the police.

Stolen between the 26tli ultimo and 3rd instant, from the dwelling of Mrs. Lockhart Dobbin Easton, Tauranga, a ladies’ medium-sized gold ring set with two rubies, two pearls, and ten emeralds (the pearls are in the centre, five emeralds on each side in rows of three and two, and a ruby at each end of the setting), a place at back of pearls for hair with glass front; the ring has been cut and enlarged; value £4. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Maggie Clarkin, who was employed as servant in the house. Description : Supposed a native of the colony, eighteen years of age, about sft. sin. high, medium build, fresh complexion,

dark-brown, hair. She left Tauranga on the 6th instant by steamer for Auckland, and is now supposed to be living with her mother in Manning Street, Newton.

A woman, name unknown, is charged with stealing, on the 25th ultimo, from the shop of Edward Joseph Walsh, Colombo Street, Christchurch, a grey corset, value 4s. 6d., since recovered. Description : A native of Scotland or the North of Ireland, about thirty-five or forty years of age, rather tall and slight, rather long thin freckled face, dark complexion ; wore dark bonnet and plain grey ulster. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 16th instant, from the shop-window of M. Eller and Co., Willis Street, Wellington, an indiarubber mat, 36in. by 24in.; value £l.

Stolen on the 12th instant, from a bedroom in the Shamrock Hotel, Rattray Street, Dunedin, an open-face silver lever watch, maker’s name and number not known ; the property of Benjamin Giilan; value £3. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, who was staying at the hotel at the time. Description: About thirty-three years of age, sft. 4in. high, stout build, ruddy complexion, light-brown hair, clean-shaved except sandy moustache; wore blue-serge coat, grey-tweed trousers, and black hard felt hat.

On the 15th instant the dwelling of Edward Easterbrook, Roxburgh Street, Wellington, was broken into, and the following stolen: A nearly-new white double blanket with a dark stain in centre, and a white single blanket, not much worn, with several stains about the centre ; value £1 15s. Identifiable.

Stolen between 6 p.m. on the 9th and 11 p.m. on the 12th instant, from the shop of Mary Agnes Lennon, corner of Manor Place and Maitland Street, Dunedin, a 331 b. box of “ Over the Water ” tobacco, fourteen plugs to the pound, box branded ABOB ; value £Blls. Box identifiable.

Stolen between the 20tli and 25th ultimo, from the dwelling of Alexander Chase, Te Puke, Thames District, a ladies’ small silver hunting-watch with AC in monogram on front case, maker’s name and number not known, a steel albert chain attached by two spring hooks to the watch, a small silver heart and a Portuguese coin about the size of a threepenny-piece, with “ Octavo Duo Rupea” thereon, attached to chain as pendants ; value £6. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 12th instant, from a dwelling at Kihikihi, a black-leather Gladstone bag, 20in. long, white metallic fastenings, a strap round each end, value £1 10s.; a cheque on the Bank of New Zealand, To Awamutu, for £2 55., drawn by J. W. Walton in favour of self ; three £1 notes ; a number of letters ; some photographs ; a silver pencil- and pencase with lion and unicorn seal at end, value £1 ; a gold oval locket with imitation rosebud on front, value £2 ss. ; a .silver albert chain, curb pattern, links hall-marked, value 15s. ; three gold-faced studs with ivory back, value 10s. 6d. ; and a singlet and other articles of underclothing ; the property of Alexander G. S. Black. Nearly all identifiable.

Stolen between the 15th and 25th ultimo, from the dwelling of Ralph Heron, Otahuhu, Auckland District, a pair of gold earrings, pear pattern, a small piece of green glass set in ends of hooks which passes through ears ; there had at one time been a small drop at bottom; value £1 15s. Identifiable.

Between 11.15 p.m. on the Ist and 6 a.m. on the 2nd instant the Southern Cross Hotel, Addington, was burglariously entered, and the following stolen from a desk in the bar-parlour: A cash-box containing two £5 notes on the Bank of New Zealand, two £1 notes, £2 17s. in silver, two cheques on the Bank of New Zealand, Christchurch, for £9 2s. Bd. and £2 10s., both dated the Ist instant, and drawn by A. Rose in favour of Bernard Diamond ; a cheque on the Bank of New Zealand, Christchurch, for £4 11s. 4d., dated the Ist instant, and drawn by A. Rose in favour of W. Clulow ; a cheque on the Bank of New Zealand, Lyttelton, for £1 45., dated the 23rd August last, and drawn by S. W. Priest in favour of G. Franks; and a cheque on the Colonial Bank, Christchurch, for £l, dated the 29th August last, and drawn by Bennett Brothers in favour of E. Stephenson ; the property of Patrick Burke. Cheques identifiable. The cash-box has been recovered.

The vest stolen from the shop of Harry Clinch, at Temuka, has been found in the possession of Daniel Bryant, arrested by Constable Denis Guerin, Temuka Police. Suspicion no longer attaches to the man previously described.

Stolen during April last, from the boardinghouse of Alexander McKay, Shakespeare Road, Napier, a pair of large binocular field-glasses in black-leather case, one of glasses cracked, can be used as a night glass ; value £3. Identifiable.

Between 9 p.m. on the 20th and 8 a.m. on the 21st instant the stationery shop of James Whitehead, Kaiapoi, was broken into and the till broken open and ransacked, but nothing was stolen. He is now cleaned-shaved, except moustache.

Stolen about the 12th instant, from the hotel of Andrew McKinnon, Tapanui, a ladies’ silver hunting Geneva watch, No. 9171; a long gold chain, plain-link pattern; a large gold locket, plain on one side and like a star on the other, with rubies, emeralds, and pearls ; a silver necklace, curb pattern; a silver locket, with weak catch ; a light-tweed sac-coat, second and third buttons off; and a wire hair-brush ; value £l6. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Thomas McPherson, who was staying at the hotel at the time. Description: English, a sailor and labourer, about thirty-five years of age, sft. 6in. high, medium build, fresh complexion, brown hair, very light-brown beard whiskers and moustache, an old scar-mark over left eye ; carried a blue-blanket swag, in which he had a long pair of leggings. He left Tapanui after the stolen property was missed, although he had obtained employment in the neighbourhood.
