Stealing Otherwise than from the Person or from Dwellings.

A man, name unknown, is charged with stealing, on the Ist or 2nd instant, from High Street, Dunedin, two shovels and a pickaxe, value 13s. 3d., since recovered; the property of James Robertson. Description: Supposed English, a labourer, thirty years of age, sft. 6in. high, medium build, dark-brown hair beard whiskers and moustache; wore a black sac-coat and black soft felt hat. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 22nd or 23rd ultimo, from the gold-mining claim of Thomas Lynch, Moke Creek, Lake District, a quantity of auriferous earth, estimated to contain about 12oz. of gold ; value £43.

Stolen during the night of the Ist instant, from the clothes-line of William George Emeny, Otaki, two white blankets, a grey Crimean shirt, and a striped-cotton shirt; value £1 10s. Identification doubtful.

Stolen between the sth March last and the 11th ultimo, from a case while in transit between Arrowtown and Dunedin, a large counterpane, value £1; two silver cruets, value £1 ; several knives, forks, and spoons, value £1; an old silver watch, maker’s name and number not known, value 10s.; a biscuit-box with silver top, value £2; two Japanese ornaments, value ss. ; and two solid gold masonic past-masters’ jewels with “ John Barlow ” engraved thereon, value £lO each ; the property of the Trustee in the estate of the late John Barlow. Biscuit-box and jewels identifiable. The jewels may be in a box about 2ft. long by Sin. deep, painted black and varnished, which deceased took with him from Arrowtown to Dunedin, by way of Kingston, on the 25tli March last, which cannot now he found, and it is supposed was lost on the journey.

Stolen on the stli or 6th instant, from the slaughterhouse of Alexander Grey, Coal Creek, Roxburgh, a carcase of beef, about 6cwt.; value £9. Identifiable.

The saddle, &c., stolen from the stable of James Ewington, at Opaki, have been recovered, and traced to the possession of Henry Field, arrested by Constable James O’Connor, Masterton Police, and committed for trial. He has also been committed for trial on another charge of larceny.

Stolen about the stli instant, from the garden of Captain C. G. Horne, Nainai, Lower Hutt, three apple-trees, three years old ; value £l. Identifiable.

The money consisted of a £5 note and five £1 notes.

Stolen between the 2nd and 20th ultimo, from the premises of Wyald Stark, Avenal, near Invercargill, a 12in. grindstone with iron handle and wooden stand, one or two hard lumps on face of stone ; value 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the Bth instant, at Winton, a brown or drab waterproof-overcoat, with ventilator-holes at back and armpits, three large buttons on front, the other buttons torn off and the rents sewn up, 3 in circle stamped in black and gold on inside of back; the property of John Tennant; value £1 10s. Stolen on the 15th or 16th instant, from the yard of Alfred Dean, Thorndon Quay, Wellington, an indiarubber mangle, about 16in. long, shaped so as to fit on the top of a tub, with screws to hold it on, a split in lower roller; value £l. Identifiable.
