Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person, and from Dwellings.

Thomas Gillon, alias Gallin, alias Dillon, alias Maurice O’Conner, &c., is charged, on warrant issued by the Kaiapoi Bench, with breaking into the dwelling of James Laine, at Kaiapoi, on the 20th ultimo and stealing a silver lever hunting-watch, maker’s name and number not known, “ McCallum ” scratched on case, value £5; a silk pockethandkerchief, and a chamoise purse with brass clasp, containing £2 25.; all value about £B. Purse and handkerchief identifiable. Description : Scotch, a blacksmith by trade but generally works as a labourer, about forty-three years of age, sft. llin. high, stout build, dark complexion, dark hair beard whiskers and moustache, large broken nose, cast in eyes, slovenly appearance. Breaking into and stealing from the dwelling of John Morgan, Upper Spreydon: George Miller, alias Charles Miller, alias Duffy, has been arrested for this offence by Detective Maurice O’Connor, Christchurch Police, and committed for trial. The gold locket, the pair of plain gold earrings, and the chain have been recovered and traced to his possession.

Stolen between 7 p.m. on the 18th and 7 a.m. on the 20th ultimo, from the tent of Walter John Stevens, Omakare, Hawke’s Bay District, four £1 notes and a half-sovereign.

Between the Ist and 21st ultimo the dwelling of C. McK. Gordon, at Port Moeraki, Oamaru District, was broken into, and the following stolen : A new American axe, a hair-brush and comb, two teeth out of one end of comb, a leather strap 3£ft. long, a striped turkish towel, two common knives and forks with bone handles, two door-keys, and small quantities of tea, sugar, and cocoa; value 15s. 6d. Hair-brush and comb, strap, and keys identifiable.

Between the Ist and 21st ultimo the dwelling of Thomas Sime, at Port Moeraki, Oamaru District, was broken into, and a hair-brush and comb, value Is. 6d., stolen. Identifiable.

Between the Bth April last and the 12th ultimo the dwelling of Ellis Williams, Bannockburn, Lake District, was broken into, and the following stolen : A single blanket, value 155.; a jar containing 301 b. of plum-jam, value £1; two pairs of gum boots, value 155.; a set of gold shirt-studs, value 65.; a hair-broom, value 2s. 6d.; a knife-board, value 2s. 6d.; a large kerosene-lamp with white-stone stand and flowered globe, value 155.; and a white-frosted-glass butter-dish with a piece broken off cover, value ss. Lamp and butter-dish identifiable.

Stolen on the 15th or 16th ultimo, from the dwelling of Tanner Brothers, Rotorua, a purse, with brass clasp at top and flaps at each side, containing a cheque dated the 6th ultimo, No. 4933, for £4 35., on the National Bank, Tauranga, drawn by Joseph Wylie in favour of Tanner Brothers or order, and about £ls in bank-notes, gold, and silver. Purse and cheque identifiable.

Stolen on the 24th ultimo, from a bedroom in the Princess Theatre Hotel, Tory Street, Wellington, a dark pilot-cloth overcoat, considerably worn, value £1 10s.; a black operaglass sin. or 6in. long, two small stars in one of glasses as if it had been broken, value £3 ; and a set of gold studs, value £1; the property of Benjamin Oxner. Identifiable.

Stolen between the 13tli and 22nd ultimo, from a bedroom in the Commercial Hotel, Palmerston North, a gold scarfpin with a diamond in claw-setting, a small black spot in stone near apex ; the property of Maurice Cohen; value £lO. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 15th ultimo, from the billiard-room at the Palace Hotel, Rotorua, one red- and two white-ivory billiardballs ; the property of Robert King ; value £3 3s. Identification doubtful,

Stolen between 6 p.m. on the 10th and 8 a.m. on the 14th ultimo, from the dwelling of David Trim, at Tairua, an order for the payment of £5 on the Union Sash and Door Company, Auckland, drawn by James Harden in favour of David Trim. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 27th or 28th ultimo, from a house at Thorndon Quay, Wellington, a quantity of ready-made clothing, consisting of coats, trousers, and vests, a black Scotch cap with red tassel, and a black-cloth cap with peak ; the property of George Jones. Caps identifiable.

Stolen on the 26th ultimo, from the shop of James Ramsay Macdonald, Lambton Quay, Wellington, a volume entitled “ Christian Year,” value 55.; three volumes entitled “ Bible Heart Ease,” “ Golden Grain,” and “ Bible Eorget-me-not,” bound in morocco, and in a case, value 7s. 6d.; a volume entitled “ Angel Whispers,” value 3s. 6d. ; a volume entitled “ Golden Treasury,” value 25.; and a volume entitled “ Holy Living,” value 2s. 6d. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a woman, name unknown, between thirty and thirtyfive years of age, about sft. 3in. high, slight buifd, pale complexion, dark eyes, dark-brown hair, frizzled in front; wore dark dress and bonnet. Identifiable.

Stolen about the 28th April last, from a hut at Upper Waiau Eerry, Christchurch District, a silver lever huntingwatch, No. 11225, “ Alexander Hunter ” on dial, and a silver albert chain with greenstone pendant; the property of Thomas Holmes ; value £9. Identifiable.

Stolen between the 16th and 21st ultimo, and on the 24th ultimo, from Pern Hill Club, Dunedin, a brown-tweed waterproof coat with cape, value £2 10s.; and a grey-tweed overcoat with flat seams and light-check lining, “ Holtham and Welsh ”on loop at back of collar; value £3 ; the property of David Crawford. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 25th ultimo, from a bedroom in the New Zealand Restaurant, Princes Street, Dunedin, a new pair of dark Mosgiel-tweed trousers, with small red spots through material, and white leather round inside of bottoms; the property of James Clayton; value £1 ss. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 22nd ultimo, from the person of John McLachlan, while drunk, at the Eorbury Racecourse, a silver lever hunting-watch and a silver chain; value £6. The watch and chain were subsequently pawned at A. Myers’s pawn office, Princes Street, Dunedin, by a man who gave his name as Henry Reid, which is believed to be a fictitious name. He can neither be described nor identified.

Breaking into and stealing from the dwelling of Daniel McCorkindale, South Dunedin: The gun has been recovered, and traced to the possession of Robert Kidd, whom complainant declines to prosecute. Kidd was at the time a partner of complainant’s, and had permission to go into the house. He hss gone to Melbourne.

Stolen on the 25th ultimo, from the dwelling of William Farnie, Water Street, Dunedin, a black-cashmere polonaise, trimmed with brocaded silk, a black-satin bow at back; value £l. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 29th April last, from a bedroom in McCoy’s boardinghouse, Shakespeare Road, Napier, two £1 notes and about 15s. in silver; the property of John McWilliams.

Stolen on the 16th ultimo, from the person of Denis Regan, while in a brothel in Nelson Street, Auckland, an old black-leather purse, containing two £5 notes on the Bank of New Zealand, a £5 note on the Union Bank of Australia, and three £1 notes.

Stolen on the 15th ultimo, from the bar of the City Hotel, Hobson Street, Auckland, a japanned-tin cash-box, about 2ft. by Ift. by 10in., containing a tin cash-box, 6in. by 4in., which contained a £5 note, a half-sovereign, 10s, in silver, a cheque-book on the National Bank, a bank pass-book, a daybook, sundry letters, and two photographs of Fijian natives suffering from elephantiasis; the property of Alfred John Tapper ; value £B. Identifiable, except money.

Between 7 and 10 p.m. on the 27th ultimo the dwelling of Edward Monaghan, Karori, near Wellington, was broken into, and the following stolen: A ladies’ gold open-face Geneva

watch, chased; a ladies’ gold chain (small-link snake-pattern), a small gold cross about lin. by Jin., and a small round gold locket containing a man’s photograph, attached to the chain; a 9-carat gold ring with bloodstone, a sovereign, and a half-crown. Identifiable, except money. Suspicion attached to David Brennan, who is in complainant’s employment. Description: Irish, a farm-labourer, about twenty-seven years of age, sft. Gin. or Tin. high, medium build, sallow complexion, brown hair, very little hair on face.

Stolen on the 23rd or 24th ultimo, from the Greenmeadows Hotel, Taradale, a swag consisting of a rug with red, blue, and green stripes across it; three cotton spotted shirts, one with collar, the other two without collars; a pair of darktweed trousers strapped round the bottoms and up a part of the legs with material of a similar colour, a Roman Catholic prayer-book with “ Hugh Fitzpatrick, a present from Mrs. Innis, Dunstan, Otago,” written on fly-leaf; the property of Hugh Fitzpatrick ; value £2. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 21st or 22nd ultimo, from the person of Campbell McDonnell, while drunk, at Auckland, a silver lever hunting-watch, makers Croft and Son, No. 13220, a gold twist-pattern chain, very much worn, and a gold-mounted greenstone pendant, attached ; value £lO. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 17th or 18th ultimo, from a bedroom in the Governor Browne Hotel, Auckland, a double-cased 14-carat gold Geneva lever watch with brass dome, gold face, black figures, and steel hands, a small dent in front case, which is only visible on inner side; a brass chain, curb-pattern, washed with gold, thick in centre and tapering towards ends, steel bar, and a brass watch-key as pendant; value £7 10s. Identifiable.

On the morning of the 24th ultimo the Palace Hotel, Eotorua, was burglariously entered, and the following stolen: A pair of white blankets, two white turkish towels marked “ W. Kelly,” two bottles of Hennessy’s brandy, two bottles of Walker’s Scotch whiskey, several small flasks of whiskey, a bundle of cigars, three bottles of schnaps, and 3s. in silver; the property of Robert King ; value £4 4s. Towels identifiable.

Between 10.30 p.m. on the Bth and 7.30 a.m. on the 9th April last the shop of Henry Franklin, Waimate, was broken into, and the following stolen : Three bottles of tricopherous, nine small bottles of mixed scent, two hair-brushes, three bottles of limejuice and glycerine, and a cribbage-board; value £1 10s. The cribbage-board has since been recovered.

Between 10.30 p.m. on the Bth and 7.30 a.m. on the 9th April last the shop of Joseph Williams, Waimate, was broken into, and five pairs of children’s boots stolen ; value £1 ss.

Stolen on the Ist or 2nd instant, from the shop of Thomas Green, Willis Street, Wellington, 10 yards of West of England brown tweed, single width ; value £3. Identifiable.

Between 3 p.m. on the 16th and 9 a.m. on the 19th ultimo an unoccupied < hut at Roache’s Gully, near Naseby, was broken into, and a sluicing-hose, 42 yards long, had been in use about six months, the property of Hep San Tong, stolen; value £4. Identifiable if complainant’s name, which is written thereon in Chinese, is not worn off.

Stolen on the 31st ultimo or Ist instant, from the sampleroom of John A. Fothergill, Ridgway Street, Wanganui, two brown-paper parcels containing two bright-coloured striped Austrian rugs, three bright-coloured check-pattern shawls, three or four dozen pairs of childrens’ taffeta and cashmere gloves, about two dozen cream, sky-blue, and black-silk lace mitts, eleven pairs of men’s tanned dogskin gauntlet gloves, four pairs of girls’ No. 1 lace-up leather boots with high tops, and about a yard of Brussels carpet; value £lO. Boots and gauntlet gloves identifiable.

Boots and tobacco identifiable. Suspicion attached to a swagsman, name unknown. Supposed a native of the colony, about twenty-two years of age, sft. 6in. or Tin. high, medium build, dark complexion and hair, no hair on

face; wore light-drab coat and trousers, very old boots, and black-felt hat; carried a tent-swag and a billycan. He went towards Palmerston South.

Between 9.30 p.m, on the Ist and 7 a.m. on the 2nd instant the shop of George Watkins, Tuam Street, Christchurch, was broken into, and the following stolen: A gold nugget-pin, diamond-shape, a pair of gold earrings about the size and shape of a fourpenny piece, two pairs of small silver earrings with round drops at ends, a ladies’ silver albert, small-link pattern, with silver tassel pendant; a steel albert with a half-dollar silver piece attached, two silver rings (one a plain thick band, the other is narrow at the bottom, wide at top, and has a cross on top), two half-dollar silver pieces, a quarter-dollar silver piece, an Indian coin, six amber mouthpieces, a silver-mounted pencil-case with bone handle, odd shirt-studs and sleeve-links, an oxford cotton shirt, and a red-cotton singlet; value £4 10s. Curtis ; a cheque for £4 155., drawn by T. Kilgour ; a cheque for £2, drawn by Albert Walker ; a cheque for £l, drawn by James Cocks; a cheque, dated the 29th ultimo, No. 219578, for £3, druwn by J. Muir in favour of J. Duggan ; a cheque for £4 7s. 6d., drawn by Charles McLever in favour of C. Curtis, all drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Thames ; a cheque for £2 10s. on the Union Bank of Australia, drawn by J. Hickey in favour of C. Curtis ; an American silver dollar, a Hawaiian half-dollar, a Chillian half-dollar, a quarter-dollar with a hole through it, two half-dollars, a spade-ace halfguinea with a hole through it, a five-shilling piece of the reign of George 111., with St. George and dragon thereon; three very rich small quartz-gold specimens, a large quartzgold specimen broken in two, the pieces fit into each other ; a £5 note and a £1 note on the Bank of New Zealand, two £1 notes on the Bank of New South Wales, a £1 note on the Union Bank of Australia, £6 or £7 in silver, and a bottle of Hennessy’s brandy; the property of Charles Curtis.
