Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

Between 2 and 6 p.m. on the 18th ultimo the dwelling of Evan Jones, Bannockburn, Lake District, was broken into, and four £5 notes on the Bank of New Zealand, Nos. 133780, 294787, 270858, and 269073, stolen. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a Mrs. W. Jones, who was seen at the house on the day the robbery was committed, during complainant’s absence. Description : A native of Wales, thirty-eight years of age, sft. lin. high, stout build, fresh complexion, dark hair and blue eyes; is fond of riding. She is at present residing at Carrick Range.

Between 3 a.m. on the 17th and 7 p.m. on the 20th ultimo a dwelling at Tuna Bay, Pelorus Sound, was broken into, and the following stolen: A pair of watertight boots, size 8, value 17s. 6d. ; a grey check-cotton shirt, value 3s. ; a blue-serge hat, value 4s. 6d.; a blue-cloth monkey-jacket with velvet collar and bound with braid, three outside pockets and an inside pocket, value £1 55.; a silver-mounted greenstone pendant, value 155.; a brown necktie with lightblue stripes, and a blue-and-white check necktie, value Bs.; the property of Charles Leov. Identifiable. A brown-mole-skin trousers, size 5, value 10s. 6d.; a flax-coloured shirt with zig-zag stripes, value 4s. ; 2Jib. tobacco, value 155.; and a grey-tweed vest, value 7s. 6d.; the property of Michael Aldridge. Identifiable, except tobacco. Also a sheath-knife and case, a tomahawk, a fishing-line, about 201 b. flour, lib. tea, and about 101 b. honey; the property of Peter Archer; value 18s. 6d. Knife identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, and a boy, who gave his name as William Delauney. Description: First, supposed Irish, about thirty-five years of age, sft. 6in. high, slight build, roundshouldered, stooped when walking, dark hair and beard turning grey, sunken eyes ; wore grey - tweed frock - coat, dirty white-moleskin trousers, and old shoes ; carried a large tentswag. Second, ten or eleven years of age, stout build, red hair, face very much freckled ; wore grey coat, which is much too large for him, white-moleskin trousers, and leather leggings. He carried a swag rolled in a tent-fly.

Stolen on the 14th or 15th ultimo, from a whare at Poukawa, Hawke’s Bay, eighteen £1 notes; the property of James Corless.

Stolen on the 15th or 16th ultimo, from the dwelling of John Gregory, Brown Street, Thames, a ladies’ 18-carat new gold ring, plain pattern, JW engraved on inside; value £1 ss. Identifiable.

Stolen between 9.30 p.m. on the 11th and 10 a.m. on the 13th ultimo, from the Golden Age Hotel, Waiotahi Creek, Thames, a woollen rug, red white and blue square pattern; the property of Thomas Clarke; value £1 ss. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a Mrs. Kane, alias King, a native of Scotland or the North of Ireland, about forty years of age, sft. 3in. high, stout build, fair complexion, brown hair, red face, fond of drink. She left the Thames on the 12th ultimo by the steamer “ Rotomahana ” for Auckland.

About 11.35 p.m. on the 18th ultimo, at Lyttelton, Samuel Brealey was assaulted by three men, names unknown, whom he can neither describe nor identify, and robbed of a common pocket-knife, value Is., and a leather purse containing a £5 note on the Bank of New Zealand and 15s. in silver. Purse and knife identifiable.

Stolen on the 19th ultimo, from a bedroom in the Hurunui Hotel, Hurunui, ten £1 notes; the property of Henry Cooper.

Stolen on the Bth or 9th ultimo, from a bedroom in the Gladstone Hotel, Gladstone, Southland District, two £1 notes and ss. in silver ; the property of Bridget Ryan.

Stolen on the sth or 6th ultimo, from a whare at the Puniu Railway-works, near Kihikihi, three £1 notes, 7s. 6d. in silver, a pair of dark Mosgiel tweed trousers, value £1; a pair of woollen socks, value 25.; and a pair of sleeve-links, value 25.; the property of Stephen T. Hyde. Trousers identifiable.

Stolen on the 13th ultimo, from the shop-door of William James White, at Waipawa, a single-breasted light-grey-tweed sac-coat, size 4, four buttons on front, sleeves lined with red-and-white silesia, and body with drab material; value 12s. 6d. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, supposed a German or Dane, about forty years of age, about sft. 7in. or Bin. high, stout build, beard and moustache turning grey, cheeks shaved.

Stolen about the 13th ultimo, from the hut of Henry Ure, Otepopo, Oamaru District, a silver chain, ends twisted, two small imitation-lockets in centre, with blue and green stars on sides and on two small plats between the lockets, value 15s. ; a white-cotton singlet, an under-flannel, and a Crimean shirt with red stripes mixed with white, all very much worn; value 7s. 6d. Identifiable.

Between the 24th and 28th December last the whare of Michael Mullooly, at Puatai. East Coast, was broken into, and the following stolen: lib. candles, a diary for 1884, and a bundle of receipts and other documents. Identifiable, except candles.

Stolen on the 10th ultimo, from a whare at Mohaka, Hawke’s Bay District, a pepper-and-salt-coloured overcoat, a grey-tweed coat, a pair of grey-tweed trousers and vest, two boys’ grey-tweed suits, and six regatta-shirts; the property of Edward James and James Ford; value £6. Identification doubtful. Maoris suspected.

Between 7 p.m. on the 15th and 8 p.m. on the 16th ultimo the shop of John Coogan, Manners Street, Wellington, was broken into, and a valueless cheque for £4 10s., dated January, 1884, and drawn by McLashan on a bank at Nelson, stolen. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 2nd or 3rd ultimo, from the Albertown Hotel, Albertown, Lake District, a silver Geneva hunting-watch, No. 45150, main-spring broken; the property of Thomas Greenfield. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 12th ultimo, from the Northern Hotel, Oamaru, an old single-breasted brown-tweed overcoat with light-grey-tweed lining, two outside pockets with flaps and an inside breast-pocket, brown-composition buttons, a slit at back with buttons ; and a pair of old dark-tweed trousers, which has been reseated with material of a similar colour but of a coarser description ; the property of Thomas Bunting ; value £2 10s. Identifiable.

Breaking into and stealing from the dwelling of John Henry Sellars, at Pihama: A Maori, named Iwi, has been arrested for this offence by Sergeant John Duffin, New Plymouth Police, and committed for trial. Stolen between the 28th January last and the 6th ultimo, from the dwelling of Andus Raynes, at Dargaville, a brownleather portmanteau, medium size, “ Tom Easterbrook ”

written in ink on top, value £2 10s., containing a white shirt, a nearly-new small-square-check-pattern tweed-cloth-mixture suit, coat frock or morning make, value £5 155.; and three photographs ; the property of Thomas Easterbrook. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Alfred Clune, a native of Onehunga, abushman, about twenty-eight years of age, sft. Gin./ or 7in. high, sandy complexion, clean-shaved except small fair moustache ; wore dark clothes and a straw or wideawake hat with large puggery. He loft Dargaville on the 28th January last by steamer for Helensville.

f Stolen on the 24th ultimo, from Banks’s boardinghouse, Pukerua, Wellington District, a sack containing ;a red-white-and-yellow-striped woollen rug, value 19s. ; a pair of white bedford-cord trousers with a piece of coloured tweed sewn on left leg over a burn 1 hole, value 10s.; a pair of canvas shoes, size 6, value 6s. ; and a pair of blucher boots, size 8, nailed, value 7s. 6d. ; the property of John Moessner. Stolen on the 18th or 19th ultimo, from the Clarendon Hotel, Palmerston North, a pair of elastic-side boots, size 9, considerably worn, the property of Colonel Stapp ; a pair of shooting-boots, English make, the property of Thomas Carroll ; and a metal case for holding half-sovereigns, in which was a half-sovereign and three or four shillings in silver; the property of Sergeant-Major Henry. Identifiable, except money.

Stolen on the 24th ultimo, from a tent at Smith’s railwaysiding, Makotoku, Hawke’s Bay, a double-cased silver Geneva watch, maker T. E. Cooper, London, number not known, engraved cases, a bull carved on front case ; a ladies’ silver chain with red stone in centre, a locket containing a photograph, like JAC in monogram on locket; the property of Angus Cunningham ; value £3 10s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to J. H. Cullimore, a native of Melbourne, a shoemaker, about twenty-one years of age, sft. 4in. high, medium build, dark complexion and hair, no hair on face ; dressed in blue-cloth paget-coat and vest, light-striped-tweed trousers, light-tweed stitched hat, and low shoes ; stammers ; carries a violin in a wooden case. He travels through the country playing the violin. Supposed to have gone towards Woodville.
