Deserting Wives and Families, &c.

John Whelan is charged, on warrant issued by the Lyell Bench, with having made use of obscene language, at Lyell, on the 15th ultimo. Description: Irish, a goldminer, forty-nine years of age, Q feet 2$ inches high, stout

build, grey eyes, sallow complexion, clean-shaved except a tuft of grey hair on chin. Supposed to have gone to the Brunnerton coal-mines.

Samuel Corney is charged, on warrant issued by the New Plymouth Bench, with disobeying an order to pay 15s. per week towards the support of his children. Description : English, a cabinetmaker, thirty-two years of age, 5 feet G£ inches high, medium build, dark complexion, dark-brown hair beard whiskers and moustache, erect gait, walks with a quick step ; when last seen wore dark-tweed suit and black hard felt hat, but he may now be dressed differently, and be cleancd-shaved for the purpose of disguise. Supposed to have gone to Waitara or Auckland. He was £5 10s. in arrears on the 27th October last.

(See Police Gazette, 1884, page 45, and 1885, page 55.) Jeremiah Donohoe, charged on warrant with neglecting to support his illegitimate child by Johanna Carroll, has been arrested by Constable William Hilliard, Fairlie Creek Police, and remanded to Waimate.

(See Police Gazette, 1885, page 214.) John Larkins, charged on warrant with disobeying a summons to answer a charge of assaulting the police and making use of obscene language, has been arrested by Constables Nixson Scott and John Haddock, Aratapu and Dargaville Police, and remanded to Kawakawa.

John Maher is charged, on warrant issued by the Timaru Bench, with failing to pay 10s. 6d., due for his maintenance, in October last, while in Timaru Gaol, suffering from the effects of drunkenness. Description : Irish, a labourer, fortyfive years of age, 5 feet 5£ inches high, fresh complexion, grey eyes, largo nose, dark hair; usually wears dirty darktweed suit. (See Police Gazette, 1884, page 33.) He was seen in Waimate early last month, and is now supposed to be working on a station in South Canterbury.

William Smith, alias Cox, alias Cocky, is charged on warrant of commitment to Wellington Gaol for seven days’ labour, issued by the Wellington Bench, in default of paying £1 fine and £1 9s. costs for having, on the 4tli ultimo, at Wellington, committed a nuisance in a railway-carriage on the Wellington and Masterton Railway-line. Description : English, a plasterer, sixty-t)iree years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, medium build, fresh complexion, grey hair, clean-shaved except short grey moustache, grey eyes with tender lids; usually wears faded light-grey tweed-suit and small black soft hat; slightly stooped when walking.

Thomas O’Brien is charged on warrant of commitment to Wanganui Gaol for seven days’ labour, issued by the Wanganui Bench, in default of paying £1 fine and 7s. costs for being drunk in a railway-carriage, at Eastown, on the 24th ultimo. Description : About thirty years of age, looked like a labourer, about 5 feet 7 inches high, medium build, fresh fair complexion, fair hair beard whiskers and moustache ; wore dark-grey tweed suit and white soft felt hat.

Henry Stewart is charged on warrant of commitment to New Plymouth Gaol for seven days’ imprisonment, issued by the Patca Bench, in default of paying a fine of £2 and costs for being drunk. Description: English, a butcher, twentyeight years of age, 5 feet G inches high, slight build, dark complexion, dark hair moustache and goatee ; wore dark coat, grey-tweed trousers, and drab soft felt hat. He was seen near Kakaramea on the 15th instant, but is now supposed to be in the neighbourhood of Woodville. He may go to Auckland.
