(See Police Gazette , 1885, page 165.) Uttering a forged cheque to G. M. Ross, at the Bank of New Zealand, Queenstown: A warrant has been issued by the Arrowtown Bench for the arrest of William Johnston, alias Tom Carroll, for this offence. Amended description: Irish, between thirty-five and forty years years of age, about 5 feet 6£ inches high, medium compact build, thin face, very dark full beard whiskers and moustache; wore dark coat, moleskin trousers, and heavy watertight boots; carries a tent-swag. He was at Miller’s Flat, between Queenstown and Arrowtown, on the 6th ultimo, and then said that he intended going to the Crifiel Diggings. He had a liver-and-white-coloured dog (a cross between a spaniel and retriever) with him, and, when travelling, the dog carries a billycan or some other article. The blank cheque was taken from the dwelling of Timothy Collins, near Skipper’s Point, near whose house the offender lived in an old hut for a few days about a week before the forged cheque was uttered; and on the day on which it was uttered he was seen near Queenstown in company with John Collins, a son of Timothy Collins, from whose house the blank cheque was taken. Offender is very fond of speaking of the good qualities of his dog.

During the night of the 26th ultimo, at Gisborne, some picket-fencing, the property of W. Brassey, was wilfully pulled down and damaged to the extent of about £1 10s.; and a gate, the property of H. E. Kenny, was taken off its hinges and damaged to the extent of about £l.

On the 23rd or 24th ultimo, at Lawrence, a pane of glass, value 125., was maliciously broken in one of the windows of the dwelling of Margaret Stewart.
