Extract from Victoria Police Gazette.

(From Gazette, 1885, page 257.)

(See New Zealand Police Gazette , 1884, pages 176 and 177.) Murder, etc. —Murder of Maria Cook and her infant daughter near Edenhope : Information has been received by the Nhill Police that a man answering the description of Robert Cook was killing rabbits on the Avoca Run, Sturts, Bilabong, about twenty-two miles from Wentworth, New South Wales, about twelve months ago. The man in course of conversation said his name was Cook, and that his friends resided at Lawloit; that on coming over from Mount Gambier to Horsham in a trap his wife died, and that he subsequently sold the horse and trap at one of the mining centres. The name of the place cannot be remembered, but it is supposed to be Sandhurst. It is thought that the man referred to was known on the station as Murphy, not as Cook, and that he left Avoca Run for Piroo. Nothing was known on the station regarding the Horsham murders, as it is reported newspapers rarely reached the stations there. Robert Cook’s photograph has been shown to the person supplying the above information, and he identified it as that of the man who was rabbiting on the Avoca run. It is also said the man referred to was lame or stiff of one leg.—o. 4481, 14th September, 1885.

By Authority: George Didsbgby, Government Printer, Wellington.—lßßs.
