Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

Stolen on the 16th instant, from the person of John McEaughan, while asleep in the Lyttelton Hotel, Lyttelton, seven £1 notes on the Bank of New Zealand.

The silver watch and chain stolen from the dwelling of Charles Alfred Richardson, at Wanganui, have been recovered, and traced to the possession of a boy named Thomas Buckley, arrested by Detective Lionel D. Benjamin, Wanganui Police, and sentenced to six strokes with a birch rod.

Between the 18th and 20th instant the shop of Matthew Smith, at Kensington, near Dunedin, was broken into, and the following stolen: ss. in silver; a composition Geneva lever hunting-watch, value £1; a composition hunting lever watch, with minute-hand off, value 165.; an open-faced fancy lever watch, embossed case, jewelled in eight holes, value £1 55.; two or three glaziers’ knives, value 35.; several painters’ brushes, value about £1 ; a sable stripper, value 10s.; a grainers’ thumb-piece, value Is. 6d.; a box of German toy-games, value Is.; a pair of pincers, value Is. Cd.; a glass diamond, value £1 155.; a gilders’ knife and tip, value 9d. Watches, toy-box, diamond, and gilders’ knife identifiable.

Stolen between 8 p.m. on the 20th and 6 a.m. on the 21st instant, from the hut of Joseph Ward, at Orari Flat, Canterbury, two £lO notes, Nos. 8787 and 9662 ; two £5 notes, Nos. -505 and 2 2224 or u 29698 ; four £1 notes, and 2s. 9d. in silver, u u

Notes with numbers known identifiable. Suspicion attached to Patrick Keleher, who was left in the hut during complainant’s absence. Description : Irish, twenty-one years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, medium build, dark complexion, dark hair and moustache, little or no beard or whiskers; dressed in light coat, snuff-coloured trousers, soft black-felt hat with cord for band, and watertight boots tied with twine ; carried a black rug with rod stripes. He went towards Coldstream and Ashburton on the morning of the 21st instant. He may go to Kaiapoi, where his father lives.

Duncan, Pahautanui Police, in possession of Peter Hansen, who was arrested for stealing it, but the charge was dismissed. Hansen said he purchased the watch from James Cunningham.

Stolen on the 11th instant, from the dwelling of Robert Stanley, at Foxton, four £1 notes.

Stolen on the 16th or 17th instant, from the office of William Asher, Filleul Street, Dunedin, a wooden revolvercase, 13 by 8 inches, with brass plate on top, containing one of Adams’s five-chambered muzzle-loading revolvers, a bulletmould, an oil-can, a screwdriver, and a few spare nipples; value £4 10s. Identifiable.

Between the 14th and 15th instant the premises of Arthur Smith, Walker Street, Dunedin, was broken into, and about twenty door-keys and four lamp-globes, value £l, stolen.

Stolen on the 15th or 16th instant, from the shop-door of John Taylor, Rattray Street, Dunedin, a white-linen shirt, size 14J inches, plain front, value 95.; a black-silk necktie, value Is. 6d.; and a pair of French patent braces, with white and blue stripes, value 2s. 6d. Identifiable. -

Stolen on the 17th instant, from the person of Emma Smart, on board the steamer “Doric,” at Wellington, a brown-leather purse with clasp, containing a sovereign, two half-sovereigns, ss. 6d. in silver, two cards bearing the addresses of Mrs. Mills, Mill House, Caversham, County Kent, England, and Mrs. Thorndon, care of Mrs. Smerdon, Auckland. Identifiable, except money.

On the 13th instant the shop of William Henry Lennon, Reid Road, South Dunedin, was broken into, and the following stolen : Two sixpenny pieces, about 3s. in coppers, half a tin of Scotch-mixture lollies, a tin of peppermint lollies, half a tin of conversation lollies, some lemon-peel, and fib. of tobacco. The tins had Hatton, King, and Co.’s brand thereon, and “Lennon ” written on the top of each.

Between 7 p.m. on the 20tli and 7 a.m. on the 21st ultimo the shop of Tobias Henry Kcesing, Victoria Street, Auckland, was broken into, and the following stolen : Two dozen aluminum pencilcases, 1| inches long, a small ring on end of each; two dozen aluminum pencilcases, 2& inches long, plain pattern; a dozen kauri-gum ornaments inlaid with shells and moss ; eleven silver thimbles, some plain and

some ridged at bottom; seven gilt rings with imitation diamonds in claw-setting; seven silver-plated rings, plain hoop pattern, set with red and black stones; six nickel silver-plated clocks, 6 by 4 inches ; a small wooden-cased clock, and a quantity of other gilt and plated jewellery; value £7. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to William Price, English, a cab-driver, about thirty-six years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, stout build, ruddy complexion, brown hair, short brown whiskers and moustache, chin likely shaved; wore grey-tweed suit and hard black-felt hat. He left Auckland on the 21st ultimo for Sydney.

Stolen on the 14th or 15th instant, from the drill-shed at North Dunedin, a claw-hammer, a tomahawk, and a socket chisel; the property of Alexander Hunter; value Bs. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 10th or 11th instant, from the premises of Rachel Grieve, Bluespur, near Lawrence, an English-made saddle, about half worn, half lined and stuffed, knee-pads covered with colonial-made material, holes cut with a knife in stirrup leathers, oval stirrup irons, and an old slit-leather girth, value £7 10s.; also a side of green bacon, about 301 b. weight, value £2. Saddle identifiable.

Stolen about the 15th instant, from off a fence at Riccarton, near Christchurch, a nightdress, a chemise, and a slip-body, marked “ C. E. Deans;” a nightdress, a chemise, and a pair of ladies’ drawers, marked “ Jane Deans;” two or three pairs of boys’ white-calico drawers, marked “ Deans;” about ten or twelve pairs of childrens’ twilled-calico drawers with frilling round band, a child’s chemise, a nightdress, two pairs of ladies’ drawers, three chemises, and a white crochet antimacassar ; the property of John Deans. Identifiable.

Stolen between the lltli ultimo and 12th instant, from a yard in Short Street, off Heriot Row, Dunedin, a 20gallon copper boiler; the property of George Young ; value £2.

Stolen during the night of the 4th instant, from the saleyard of William Alexander Brown, Lichfield Street, Christchurch, a spring-cart, outside painted dark green, which colour is faded, inside painted white, name-plate taken off off-side, and two of the nails by which it was fastened drawn out and two other nails driven in, step-board cracked in several places, maker Berg ; value £ll. Identifiable.
