(From Gazette, 1884, pages 1409, 1410, 1411,1431, and 1432.) Conditions for Trout-fishing in Nelson.

Wh. F. DRUMMOND JERYOIS, Governor.

IN pursuance of the powers and authorities vested in him by “The Salmon and Trout Act, 1867,” His Excellency the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand doth hereby make the following regulations for the Provincial District of Nelson:—

1. Any holder of a license as hereinafter mentioned may fish with rod and line for trout in each river or stream iii the Provincial District of Nelson which flows into Blind Bay, from the first day of October, one thousand eight hundred and eighty-four, to the thirty-first day of March, one thousand eight hundred and eighty-five, both inclusive, but only between the hours of five o’clock in the morning and ten o’clock in the evening.

2. Licenses to fish with rod and line in the said waters will be issued under the hand of the Secretary of the Nelson Acclimatisation Society, at Nelson, and for every license a fee of ten shillings will be charged. 3. No license shall authorize any person other than the person named therein to fish, and that only with rod and line.

4. Any person fishing without a license, or any person who shall, on demand of any person holding and showing a license, or on the demand of any ranger, police officer, or constable, fail to produce and show to such person, ranger, police officer, or constable his license, shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding twenty pounds. 5. All trout not exceeding seven inches in length taken by any person fishing as aforesaid shall be immediately returned alive into the water ; and any person convicted of infringing this regulation shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding twenty pounds sterling, and his license shall thereupon become void.

6. Except as aforesaid, no person shall fish or use any net or other engine, instrument, or device for taking fish in any lake, river, or stream within the above district; and all persons offending against this regulation shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding fifty pounds. 7. Any person who puts, throws, or places, or allows to be put thrown, or placed, into any lake, river, or stream in the said district, any dynamite or other explosive substance, or any matter or liquid deleterious to fish, shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding one hundred pounds. 8. These regulations shall come into force as from the date hereof.

Conditions for Trout Fishing in North Canterbury

IN pursuance of tho powers and authorities vested in him by “ The Salmon and Trout Act, 1867,” His Excellency the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand doth hereby make the following regulations for that part of the Provincial District of Canterbury lying to tho north of the Rangitata River:—

1. These regulations shall come in force from the date of the publication thereof in the New Zealand Gazette. 2. Licenses to fish for trout in all the rivers, streams, and lakes in the Provincial District of Canterbury north of the Rangitata River will be issued under the hand of the Secretary of the Canterbury Acclimatisation Society, at Christchurch, and for every such license a fee of twenty shillings will be charged: Provided it shall not be obligatory upon the said Secretary to issue a license. 3. Every such license shall entitle the person named therein to fish in any of the said rivers, streams, and lakes from the fifteenth day of October in any year until the fifteenth day of April in the year following inclusive, between the hours of five a.m. and ten p.m. only, but no such license shall confer any right of entry upon the land of any person without his consent; and any person fishing or attempting to fish or take any salmon or trout except during the abovementioned period shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding fifty pounds. 4. Every such licenso shall entitle the person named therein to fish with one rod and line, and with the bait or devices authorized by these regulations only ; and any person who shall use any ground-bait, or any net (except a landingnet) or other engine, instrument, or device not expressly authorized by these regulations, or shall use or employ either of the methods known as “ cross-line fishing ” or “ strokehauling,” or any other unsportsmanlike device, or shall use as bait salmon-roe, fish-roe, or any bait prepared with any chemical or medicated dressing whatever, for taking fish in any of the said rivers, streams, or lakes, shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding fifty pounds; and every such net or other engine, instrument, or device used contrary to these regulations shall be forfeited. 5. Any person fishing without a license, or any person who shall on the demand of any ranger, constable, or officer of the Acclimatisation Society, fail to produce and show to such ranger, officer, or constable Iris license, or the contents of his creel or bag, or the bait used by him for taking fish, or any person who shall on demand of a person holding and showing a license fail to produce and show to such person the license (if any) held by him, shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding twenty pounds. 6. No person shall use or fish with or place on any hook or other device used for taking trout any bait of any kind or description whatever, except the following: Natural and artificial fly, natural and artificial minnow, silveries, beetles, grasshoppers, spiders, caterpillars, the larva: of the cadisfly and worm. Any person found infringing this regulation shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding fifty pounds. 7. Every trout not exceeding eight inches in length, taken by any person, shall be immediately returned alive into the water from which the same is taken; and any person infringing this regulation shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding twenty pounds. 8. Any person who shall put, throw, or place, or allow to be put, thrown, or placed, into any river, stream, or lake in the said Provincial District of Canterbury, any poisonous, deleterious, or noxious material, with intent to destroy any fish therein, shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding one hundred pounds. 9. No person shall buy, sell, or expose or offer for sale, or shall fish for the purpose of obtaining, any salmon, trout, perch, or tench, in order to make sale of tho same or any part thereof for a period of two years from the date of the publication of these regulations in the Neiu Zealand Gazette;

and any person infringing tliis regulation shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding fifty pounds. 10. If any person shall be convicted of any offence against these regulations the license of the offender shall thereupon become void.

Conditions for Trout-fishing in Waitaki .

IN pursuance of the powers and authorities vested in him by “ The Salmon and Trout Act, 1867,” His Excellency the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand doth hereby make the following regulations for the County of Waitaki: — 1. Any holder of a license may fish with rod and line for trout in all the streams and lakes within and forming the boundaries of the County of Waitaki from the first day of October, one thousand eight hundred and eighty-four, to the thirty-first day of March, one thousand eight hundred and eighty-five, both inclusive. 2. Licenses to fish with rod and line in the above district will be issued under the hand of the Secretary of the Waitaki County Acclimatisation Society, at Oamaru, and for every license a fee of twenty shillings will be charged. 3. No license shall authorize any person other than the person named therein to fish, and that only with rod and line.

4. Any person fishing without a license, or any person who shall, on demand of any person holding and showing a license, or on the demand of any ranger, police officer, or constable, fail to produce and show to such person, ranger, police officer, or constable his license, shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding twenty pounds. 5. IN exercise of the powers vested in me by “ The Animals Protection Act, 1880,” I, William Francis Drummond Jervois, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, do hereby declare that, from and after the date hereof, the imported birds known as skylarks ( Alauda arvensis), chaffinches (Fringilla ccelebs), and blackbirds ( Turdus merula) may be taken or killed in the County of Selwyn. TN exercise and pursuance of the powers and authorities vested in him by “ The Salmon and Trout Act, 1867,” His Excellency the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, by and with the advice and consent of the Executive Council of the said colony, doth hereby order and declare that salmon, young salmon, salmon fry, trout, young trout, and trout fry, together with all other salmonidse and whitefish which have been introduced into the said Colony of New Zealand, shall bo and are hereby protected; subject, however, to the operation of such open seasons for fishing for and taking such fish as the Governor may from time to time declare by regulations to be made under the said Act or any amendment thereof.

Condition for Trout-fishing in Southland,

IN pursuance of the powers and authorites vested in him by “ The Salmon and Trout Act, 1867,” His Excellency the Governor of the Colony of Now Zealand doth hereby make the following regulations for the District of Southland :

1. Any holder of a license as hereinafter mentioned may fish with rod and line for trout in the Orawia, Oreti, Makarewa, Otamita, Eyre, and Mataura Rivers, and their tributaries, from the fifteenth day of October, one thousand eight hundred and eighty-four, to the thirty-first day of March, one thousand eight hundred and eighty-five, both inclusive.

2. Licenses to fish with rod and line in the said rivers and streams will be issued under the hand of the Secretary of the Acclimatisation Society, at Invercargill, and for every license a fee of twenty shillings will be charged. 3. No license shall authorize any person other than the person named therein to fish, and that only with rod and line.

4. Any person fishing without a license, or otherwise than as above, or any person who shall, on demand of any person holding and showing a license, or on the demand of any ranger, police office, or constable, fail to produce and show to such person, ranger, police officer, or constable his license, shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding twenty pounds. 5. All trout not exceeding seven inches in length, taken by any person fishing as aforesaid, shall be immediately returned alive to the river or stream ; and any person convicted of infringing this regulation shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding twenty pounds sterling, and his license shall thereupon become void. 6. Except as aforesaid, no person shall fish or use any net or other engine, instrument, or device for taking fish in any lake, river, or stream in the Counties of Fiord and Wallace, and of Southland to the west of the Mataura River ; and all persons offending against this regulation shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding fifty pounds. 7. Any person who puts, throws, or places, or allows to be put, thrown, or placed, into any lake, river, or stream in the said counties, any dynamite or other explosive substance, or any matter or liquid deleterious to fish, shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding one hundred pounds. 8. These regulations shall come into force as from the date hereof.

Conditions for Trout Fishing in South Canterbury

IN pursuance of the powers and authorities vested in him by “ The Salmon and Trout Act, 1867,” His Excellency the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand doth hereby make the following regulations for that part of the Provincial District of Canterbury lying to the south of the Rangitata River:—

1. These regulations shall come in force from, the date of the publication thereof in the New Zealand Gazette ,

2. Licenses to fish for trout in all the rivers, streams, and lakes in the Provincial District of Canterbury south of the Rangitata River will be issued under the hand of the Secretary of the South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society, at Timaru, and for every such license a fee of twenty shillings will be charged: Provided that it shall not be obligatory upon the said Secretary to issue a license. 3. Every such license shall entitle the person named therein to fish in any of the said rivers, streams, and lakes from the fifteenth day of October in any year until the fifteenth day of April in the year following inclusive, between the hours of five a.m. and ten p.m. only, but no such license shall confer any right of entry upon the land of any person without his consent; and any person fishing or attempting to fish or take any salmon or trout except during the abovementioned period shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding fifty pounds. 4. No person shall use or fish with or place on any hook or other device used for taking trout any bait of any kind or description whatever, except the following: Natural and artificial fly, natural and artificial minnow, silveries, beetles, grasshoppers, spiders, caterpillars, the larvae of the cadisfly and worm. Any person found infringing this regulation shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding fifty pounds. 7. No person shall buy, sell, or expose or offer for sale, or shall fish for the purpose of obtaining, any salmon, trout, perch, or tench, in order to make sale of the same or any part thereof, for a period of two years from the date of the publication of these regulations in the New Zealand Gazette; and any person infringing this regulation shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding fifty pounds. 10. If any person shall bo convicted of any offence against these regulations the license of the offender shall thereupon become void.
