B. Rogers, alias Frisco, is charged, on warrant issued by the Auckland Bench, with having on the 7th instant, at Auckland, uttered to Thomas E. Carter a forged cheque for £ls 10s., drawn on the National Bank of New Zealand in favour of B. Rogers, and purporting to be signed by M. Schmidt, junior. Description: A German, a bushman, about thirty years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, medium build, dark complexion, dark hair beard and moustache, little or no whiskers; wore a good dark-tweed suit, and soft black-felt hat. He purchased a fiddle and case for £5 6s. from Mr. Carter, and in payment uttered the forged cheque, and received a cheque from Mr. Carter for the balance, £lO 4s. He is supposed to have gone to Mercury Bay.

John Bbown is charged, on warrant issued by the Dunedin Bench, with having on the 2nd instant uttered to Janies Liston, of the Douglas Hotel, George Street, Dunedin, a forged cheque for £4 55., drawn on the Colonial Bank of New Zealand, Outrarn, and purporting to be signed by James Shand. Description: Between forty-five and fifty years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, medium build, pale complexion, blue eyes, fair hair beard whiskers and moustache, turning grey, whiskers cut short; dressed in light-grey tweed paget coat, light-grey tweed trousers and vest, and white soft-felt hat. He also uttered another forged cheque for £4 16s. He is believed to be identical with William Harper, described in the next paragraph.

William Harper is charged, on warrant issued by the Balclutha Bench, with having on the 2nd instant, at Balclutha, obtained £1 10s. from George Reach by means of a valueless cheque. Description ; Supposed to be an American, a carpenter (said he was an agent for the Mutual Provident Insurance Company), fifty years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, rather stout build, fresh complexion, fair hair, sandy beard whiskers and moustache, turning grey; dressed in dark jacket, dark trousers and vest, rather shabby, white shirt, elastic-side boots, and hard black-felt hat; sometimes wears an overcoat; fond of drink. He left Balclutha on the 2nd instant by train, supposed for Dunedin, and had in his possession a hard leather bag. There are likely to be other

charges preferred against this offender, who is believed to be identical with William J. H. D. Harper, sentenced at Timaru, on the 12th December, 1877, to twelve months’ labour, for forging and uttering. (See Police Gazette, 1878, page 152.) He is also believed to be identical with John Brown, described in the preceding paragraph.

Arthur Walker is charged, on warrant issued by the Wellington Bench, with having, on the 4th September and the 29th November last, at Wellington, embezzled £2 9s. and £4 19s. 6d., the money of James McLaren Miller, coalmerchant, by whom he was employed to sell coal and to collect the proceeds. Description: English, a clerk and commercial traveller, about thirty-three years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, stout-set build, legs inclined to bandy, small straight nose, rather small eyes, fair hair, and small fair moustache ; face bears traces of intemperate habits; wore dirty grey-tweed suit (paget coat), and round black-felt hat; slovenly appearance. It is supposed that ho left Wellington on the 30th ultimo by the barque “ Sophia R. Luhrs ” for Newcastle, New South Wales.

On the morning of the 28th ultimo, at Gap Road, Southland, eight dozen lemonade bottles, the property of Richard James, value £2 Bs., were maliciously broken.

Between the 31st ultimo and 2nd instant, at Milburn, near Milton, Otago, an opossum rug, a suit of clothes, a blanket, a portmanteau, a waterproof coat, and a shirt, value £ls, the property of Alexander Weatherspoon, were maliciously cut up in his dwelling and rendered useless. He occupied a room over the stable of Mr. McDonald, by whom he was employed as ploughman.

Charles White is charged, on warrant issued at Dunedin, with disobeying a summons to appear at the office of the Official Assignee in Bankruptcy, at Dunedin, on the 14th instant. Description: English, a commission agent, fortyfive years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, slight build, lightbrown hair, largo light-brown beard whiskers and moustache; wears spectacles; usually wears dark frock-coat, grey-tweed trousers and vest, and black belltopper hat. He was in business as a commission agent in Dunedin for several years, and recently became bankrupt. It is believed that he will endeavour to leave the colony.

(See Police Gazette, 1884, page 2.) Charles Madden, charged on warrant with having embezzled money, the property of Messrs. Cullen and Herbert, has been arrested by Sergeant John Rooney, Balclutha Police, and remanded to Tapanui.

On the 13th instant, at Hurunui, a set of buggy-harness, value £7, the property of a Mr. McLean, of Waikari, was maliciously cut with a knife in several places in the Hurunui Hotel stables.
