Deserting Wives and Families, &c.
(See Police Gazette, 1883, page 189.) The warrant issued by the Rakaia Bench for the arrest of William Jones, for deserting his wife and family, has been cancelled.
(See Police Gazette, 1883, page 189.) William Hurley, charged on warrant with deserting his wife, has been arrested by Constable Patrick Maher, Waikaia Police, remanded to Invercargill, and ordered to pay £1 10s. per month towards her support.
James Tollins is charged on warrant of commitment to the Patea Gaol for forty-eight hours’ labour, issued by the Patea Bench, in default of paying £1 fine and 7s. costs, for being drunk at Manutahi on the 6th instant. Description: English, a bush-cook and labourer, forty-five years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, slight build, a long tuft of greybeard on chin, leans to the right side when walking; dressed in old grey suit and dark hat.
(See Police Gazette, 1883, page 165.) Samuel Haines, charged on warrant with deserting his wife and children, has been arrested by Constable Denis Mahoney, Christchurch Police, and discharged.
Robert Walsh is charged, on warrant issued by the Dunedin Bench, with deserting his wife, at Dunedin, since the 10th instant. Description : A native of London, a labourer, thirty-four years of age, but looks younger, about 5 feet 6 inches high, medium build, fair complexion, dark hair, sandy beard and moustache, cheeks shaved, MG on back of right hand; may be wearing a dark suit or dark coat and grey trousers. He left Port Chalmers on the 10th instant by the steamer “ Ilauroto,” for Sydney, accompanied by Ellen Cliadfield, a prostitute, a native of the colony, nineteen years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, slight build, fair hair and complexion.
