Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

Charles Smith is charged with stealing on the Ist ultimo from a dwelling at Nightcaps, Southland, a nearly-new red double blanket, theproperty of Thomas Phillips, value £110s; and a nearly-new blue double blanket, the property of Pierce Burns, value £ 110 s. Identifiable. Description: English, a labourer and rabbiter, about twenty-six years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, slight build, round-shouldered and slightly stooped, fresh complexion, fair hair, small fair beard whiskers and moustache, hoarse gruff voice, simple manner; dressed in dark-tweed coat, white-moleskin trousers, soft black-felt hat, and watertight boots; carried a swag. It is supposed he has gone to Wyndham or Queenstown.

Sydney Claxton is charged, on warrant issued by ibe Masterton Bench, with slealing, on the 17th ultimo, from a whare at Brancepeth Road, Taueru, about 3| lb. of nailrod tobacco and six dozen small boxes of matches ; the property of Henry Russell; value £1 4s. Identifiable. Description: Supposed English, a cook, about twenty-five years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, stout build, fair complexion, thin fair whiskers and moustache; wore dark thick coat and trousers, and heavy black broad-brimmed hat; carried his clothing, &e., in a sailors’ canvas bag. He was seen going towards Wbareama about the 20th ultimo.

The meerschaum pipe and case, stolen from the shop of Charles Bui tier, at Opuuake, have been recovered, and traced to the possession of Michael O’Haulan, for whose arrest a warrant has been issued by the Opunake Bench. Description : Irish, a labourer, usually employed driving horses, sixty years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, medium build, sallow complexion, small sunken eyes, grey hair, generally clean-shaved, lame; fond of drink; had been in the army. He was seen at Manaia on the Bth or 9th ultimo, and then said he was going to Patea to seek employment on Nathan’s contract.

Stolen on the 29th or 30th ultimo, from the dwelling of Robert Griggs, Adelaide Road, Wellington, a pair of dark diagonal trousers and a vest of same material, both nearly new; value £3. Identifiable.

Between the 14th and 21st ultimo the dwelling of John Berry, Hedgehope, Southland, was broken into, and an old leather bag, 6 by 4 inches, containing two £1 notes and a halfsovereign, stolen. Bag only identifiable. Suspicion attached to William J. Berry, complainant’s son.

Stolen between the 20th May last and the Ist ultimo, from a dwelling at Wairio, Southland, a gold albert chain, smalllink pattern, alternate links plain and fine gold wire, twisted, a small plain gold locket, with LOVE engraved on one side, attached; the property of Andrew Hall; value £B. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 4th instant, from the shop-door of R. A. Adams, at Patea, a pair of grey-tweed trousers, size 4, bound at bottoms with leather ; value £1 ss. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 26th ultimo, from the shop-door of James Mulligan, Colombo Street, Christchurch, a piece of black American-leather web, about 8 yards long by 4 feet wide, used for table-covers, &c.; value 14s. Identifiable.

Stolen about midnight on the 21st. ultimo, from the person of George M. Mclntosh while fighting with a man at Ashburton, a silver Geneva watch, maker Benson, London, No. 7084, steel guard attached, value £2 10s.; a£s note on the Bunk of New Zealand, and 17s. in silver. Watch identifiable. The guard has since been recovered. (See Police Gazette, 1833, page 111.) The watch stolen fiom the dwelling of Archibald Garrick, at Waihola, has been recovered, and traced to the possession of William Thomson, who has been arrested by Constable David Burnett, Mosgiel Police.

Stolen on the sth instant, from the shop of J. Hesseltine, at Tinwald, Canterbury, a pair of metal spurs, neck 2| inches long, steel rowels; value 10s. Gd. Identification doubtful.

Between the 27th May last and the 18th ultimo the dwelling of Mrs. Bettridge, at Halswell, Canterbury, was broken into, and the following stolen: A bath-towel, two smooth towels, a ladies’ nightgown, a girls’ nightgown, a bolster tick, about 4 yards of liolland, and some small pieces of calico; value £l. Nightgowns identifiable.

Stolen between the 6th and 17th ultimo, from the dwelling of Harper Lepper, Lepperton, Taranaki, a silver Geneva hunting-watch, maker’s name and number not known, gilt dial, mainspring broken, second-hand wanting, spring of case very weak, value £4 10s.; and a ham about 15 lb. weight, value 10s. Watch identifiable.

About 2.30 a m. on the 25th ultimo a man, name unknown* of whom no description can be obtained, attempted to break into the dwelling of Samuel Hales, Lismore Street, Lawrence.

On the 25th ultimo the dwelling of Thomas Mahon, FourChain Road, near View Hill, Canterbury, was broken into, and an English lever hunting-watch, No. 25774, maker’s name not known, stolen. Identifiable.

About the 23rd ultimo the dwelling of James Johnston, Kaukapakapa, Auckland, was broken into, and 4 cwt. of scraped kauri gum stolen ; value about £B. Some of it identifiable. Suspicion attached to Michael O’Brien, a gumdigger, about forty years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, very dark complexion, dark beard and whiskers ; dressed in old moleskin trousers, black sac-coat, and dark vest; has been in the army.

Stolen between tlie 16th and 18th ultimo, from a hut at Woodlands, or lost between there and Invercargill, a silver lever hunting-watch, maker Stanford, London, No. 160753; lIT scratched with a penknife on inside of cap ; the property of Harry Toomeys ; value £o 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 30th ultimo, from the shop-door of Gaston Ernest Do, George Street, Dunedin, two ladies’ black-cloth jackets, one trimmed with black fur, and the other with satin and braid round bottom ; value £1 13s. 6d. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 30th ultimo, from the shop-window of John Yates, George Street, Dunedin, 30 yards of black-silk velvet, 20 inches wide, yellow edge ; value £7 10s. Identification doubtful.

During the night of the 28th ultimo the office of the Pukeuri Junction Railway-station, near Oamaru, the property of the Government, was broken into, but nothing was stolen.
