Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

George Fleming is charged with stealing, between the 19th and 21st instant, from the dwelling of William Sargison, at St. Leonards, near Dunedin, a silver lever hunting-watch, makers Rotherham Brothers, London, No. 8338, value £5, an imitationgold chain, snake-pattern, value 2s. 6d., attached; a gentlemen’s 9-carat-gold finger-ring, with dark-brown stone, value £1; and about 4s. in small silver coins. Watch and ring identifiable. Description: Irish, eighteen years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, rather slight build, fresh complexion, brown hair, thin face, full eyes ; dressed in dirty-brown-moleskin clothes and cheese-cutter cap. The watch and ring were seen in hi 3 possession.

On the 17th instant the dwelling of George Fisher, Poverty Beach, Alexandra, Otago, was broken into, and the following stolen: A ladies’ gold ring, with white stone surrounded by several other stones; a white-metal brooch, eagle-pattern; a purse containing Is. 6d., three calico chemises, a white-flannel undershirt, two calico pillowslips, two crochet-needles, one wire, the other bone ; a nightdress, a calico slip-body, a holland apron, 5 yards of black braid, a door-key, five bars of soap, some washing soda, a geranium, and a fuchsia; value £4. Identifiable, except money, soap, soda, geranium, and fuchsia.

Stolen on the 19th instant, from the dwelling of William Long, Maitland Street, Dunedin, two cape-down pillows, with white-calico cases, fastened with three buttons, and a white turkish towel ; value 15s. Pillowcases identifiable.

Between 8 p.m. on the 12th and 8 a.m. on the 14th instant the shop of Andrew Young, at Greytown, was entered (supposed by a skeleton-key), and the following stolen : Twelve yards of dark-grey Scotch tweed, 25 yards of dark-grev Mosgiel tweed, and eight white shirts, sizes 13 and 14£ inches; value £l4 7s. Identifiable, except shirts.

Between 11 p.m. on tlio 12fch and 8 a.m. on the 14th instant the store of Messrs. M. Caselberg and Co., at Greytown, was entered (supposed by a skeleton-key), and the following stolen : Three pairs of women’s lace-up boots, size 6; two pairs of children’s lace-up boots with copper toe-plates, size 9; one pair of children’s lace-up boots, No. 8 size; one pair of children’s liigh-leg boots, No. 8 size ; six pairs of women’s strong elasticside boots, sizes 5 and 6; three pairs of youths’ strong laceup boots, five dozen men’s merino and lamb’s-wool socks, plain and striped; one dozen men’s undershirts, one dozen woollen and merino drawers, six dozen ladies' white-cotton hose, four pieces of dark winsey, between 30 and 40 yards in each piece ; two pieces long-clotli, 32 inches broad; six men’s Crimean shirts, three and a half pairs of grey blankets, a scarlet blanket, two pairs white fancy blankets, nine pairs of men’s tweed trousers and vests, No. 5 size ; nine pairs of men’s tweed trousers and vests, No. 7 size ; two pairs of trousers, No. 5 size ; two pairs of men’s trousers, No. 3 size; two pieces of white flanuel, 30 to 40 yards in each piece ; four bags of sugar, and two and a half dozen men’s white Kaiapoi flannel under-shirts ; value £BO 10s. Identification doubtful. Messrs. Caselberg and Co. offer £25 reward for the arrest and conviction or the offender or offenders, and the recovery of the goods stolen, or in proportion to the value of the goods recovered.

Stolen about the 20th January last, from the dwelling of Frederick Tibbet, at Wade, near Auckland, four silver eggspoons, old-fashion pattern, S.T. in monogram engraved on handles ; value £3. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to John T. Smith, who was in Mr. Tibbet’s employment at the time the spoons were stolen. Description: A native of the colony, twenty years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fair hair, no hair on face, ugly features, slovenly gait; wears his hat over eyes.

The double-barrel gun stolen from the tent of Charles Beadle, at Seacliff, has been recovered, and William Sutherland arrested for the offence by Constable E. P. Bird, Hawksbury Police, and sentenced to fourteen days’ labour.

Breaking into and stealing from the dwelling of John Motion, Beach Grove, Auckland: Edward Wilson, Edmund Wilson, John Mclntosh, and John Irvin, boys under fourteen years of age, have been arrested for this offence by Constables John Bernard and Henry Clai’k, Auckland Police. The two Wilsons have been sentenced to two months’ labour each; the sentence in Mclntosh’s case has been deferred ; and the charge against Irvin has been withdrawn.

Stealing Bateen print from the shop of Frederick William Bills, at Otaki: Huhana Wirihana has been arrested for this offence by Constable Henry H. Carr, Otaki Police, and fined £2 45., four times the value of the property stolen, and 16s. costs. Fine and costs paid.

Stolen on the 14 instant, from a till in the bar of the Railway Hotel, Invercargill, a£l note; the property of Michael Griffin.

Stolen between the Bth and 10th instant, from the dwelling of John Eccles, at Whaugarei, a leather purse with clasp, containing two £1 notes, a sovereign, anil five half-sovereigns. Purse identifiable.

Stolen on the 9th instant, from the person of Maggie Baker, in Dunedin, a ladies’ gold ring set with a sapphire and diamonds, value £35; and a ladies’ gold ring set with pearls and diamonds, value £l2. Identifiable. The sapphire ring has been recovered, and traced to the possession of George Neill, arrested by Detective Alexander Henderson, Dunedin Police, and committed for trial.

Stolen on the 13th or 14th instant, from a box in the Albion Hotel, Maclaggan Street, Dunedin, a nearly-new pair of blackcloth trousers, and a white-linen shirt; the property of Thomas Leliej'; value £1 10s. Trousers identifiable.

Stolen on the Ist instant, from the shop of Alfred Gregory Bartlett, Queen Street, Auckland, a plain gold diamond ring; value £l4. Identifiable.

On the 18th or 19th instant the shop of Joseph Nathan and Co., at Bull’s, was broken into, and six £L notes, a halfsovereign, and about 10s. in silver stolen. One of the men employed in the store suspected.

Stolen on the lltli instant, from the swag of John Allen, in the bar of the Yaldhurst Hotel, Yaldhurst, five £1 notes on the Bank of New Zealand, two new woollen singlets, one white, the other blue, and two pairs of new white-twill drawers. Identification of singlets and drawers doubtful, money not identifiable. Suspicion attached to Thomas M. Marks, who opened the swag in the bar, and was seen taking something out of it. Description: English, a cook and labourer, sixty-six years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, stout build, ruddy complexion, very large red nose, grey hair beard whiskers and moustache; dressed in grey-tweed suit and soft black-felt hat. Stolen on the 10th instant, from the dwelling of A. W. Yenned, at Gisborne, an open-faced gold English three-quarter-plate lever-watch ; maker’s name not known ; AWV in Italian capitals engraved on outside of back ease ; value £3O. Identifiable.

Supposed stolen on the 18th instant, from the person of John Dixon Hayes, at Southbridge, a gentlemen’s 19-carat gold ring, elasped-iiands pattern, broken near centre, considerably worn ; “John D. Hayes” engraved on inside ; value £5 Identifiable.

Between 9.30 p.m. on the 13th and 7 a.m. on the 14th instant the store of Messrs. McDonald Brothers, City Road, Roslyn, near Dunedin, was broken into, and a £5 note, thirteen £1 notes, eight half-sovereigns, and £5 in silver stolen.

Between 11 pun. on the 12th and 8 a.m. on the 13th instant the shop of Gaston Ernest Do, George Street, Dunedin, was broken into, and about 4s. or ss. in silver and a ladies’ silk umbrella stolen ; value 12s. 6d. Identification of umbrella doubtful.

About 2 a.m. on the sth instant an attempt was made to break into the dwelling of William Sargeant, at North Invei - - cargile Suspicion attached to Frederick Middleton. (For his description, &c., see Police Gazette, 1880, page 143.)

Stolen on the 20th or 21st ultimo, from a box in the City Hotel, Christchurch, a ladies’ silver hunting Geneva watch, gilt with gold, a small spot on outside case, maker’s name and number not known, value £3 ; and fifteen £L notes ; the property of Daisy Harrison. Watch identifiable.

Stolen between the 22nd ultimo and 4th instant, from the dwelling of Jacob Jaanson, at Porirua, a brass Geneva hunting watch, a brass chain, long-link pattern, part of a gold pendant attached, value £2 55.; and a set of studs, engraved gold fronts and mother-of-pearl backs; value £l. Identifiable, except studs.

Stolen on the 14th instant, from the dwelling of John Warren, at Onelninga, four £1 notes and four half-sovereigns.

Getrick left Arrowtown for Lawrence in April last. Description : A native of New Jersey, fifty-five years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, grey hair, small grey side whiskers and moustache, chin shaved, round-shouldered, slouching gait ; dressed in faded light-grey-tweed suit, trousers strapped.

Stolen on the 19th instant, from the shop-door of Messrs. Kirkpatrick, Glendenning, and Co., Princes Street, Dunedin, two girls’ white-fur jackets, lined with red cashmere, deep-fur fringe at bottom ; value 19s. Identifiable.

Between 11.20 p.m. on the 22nd and 7.15 a m. on the 23rd instant the watchmaker’s shop of Charles Phillips, West Quay, Waitara, was broken into, and the following stolen : A silver English lever hunting-watch, No. 64132; an open-faced silver Geneva watch, silver dial, No. 25039, makers’ names not known; an American lever watch, with glass back, through which works can be seen, maker’s name and number not known ; two silver rings, one plain, the other with heart; a gold ring with small buckle engraved thereon ; a ladies’ gold chain, long square-link pattern; a gold-mounted greenstone pendant, a silver-mounted greenstone pendant, three common-plated lockets, a brooch made of a silver 50-cent. piece, pin broken off, and a gentleman’s gold ring broken in centre ; value £24. Identifiable.
