(See Police Gazette, 1882, page 74.) Herbert G. Lockwood, charged on warrant with obtaining £4 from William Hamley, by means of a valueless cheque, has been arrested by Detective Maurice Sullivan, Auckland Police, and sentenced to one month’s labour.

Sew King, charged on warrant with attempted bestiality at Waikaia, it is said was seen in Christchurch about a month ago, on his way to Greymouth, where he will likely call at the store of Ah Q.uine.

Thomas Coffey, charged on warrant with uttering a forged cheque to James Long Fleming, has been arrested by Detective John Neill, Christchurch Police, and committed for trial.

John Christopher Cuff, charged on warrant with uttering a forged promissory note to John Orson McArdell, at Invercargill, is a native of the Sandhills, Tasmania. He has two unmarried sisters living in Launceston, who arc remarkable for their size. He is known to Messrs. McCulloch and Campbell, auctioneers, Melbourne, and when in Melbourne stays with John Craik, livery-stablekeeper, Lamb Inn, Elizabeth Street. He rode several steeplechase races in Victoria about twelve years ago, and lived for a number of years with Mr. William Thomas Cox, Springvale Stud Farm, Joyce’s Creek, Newstead. He is well-known at Warrnambool, Northlake, Lamperdown, and Ballarat, and to Sergeant Grant, of the Victoria Police Force.

A man, name unknown, is charged with having, on the 9th ultimo, in the Prince of Wales Hotel, Christchurch, obtained £1 19s. Gd. and a drink from Frederick Fox by means of a valueless cheque. Description : Supposed English, about thirty years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, medium build, sandy beard whiskers and moustache. Identification doubtful. The cheque is on the Bank of New Zealand, Christchurch, No. 103, dated the Bth ultimo, and signed “ William Fraser.”

John Graham is charged, on warrant issued by the Lyttelton Bench, with uttering a forged cheque for £5, to William George Johnston, at Lyttelton, on the 3rd instant. Description: Scotch, about forty-five years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, medium build, dark hair beard whiskers and moustache turning grey; dressed in blue-serge suit and hat of same material. He left by the 10 a.m. train on the 4th instant for Christchurch. The cheque is on the Bank of New Zealand, Christchurch, and purporting to be signed “J. B. Craig.” He is supposed to be identical with William G. Graham, alias Daniel Mann, sentenced at Waipawa on the 23rd November last to six months’ labour for false pretences. J. B. Gray is charged, on warrant issued by the Christchurch Bench, with uttering a forged cheque for £6, drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Amberley, in favour of John Mahone, and purporting to be signed by J. W. Fraser to H. E. May,

in High Street, Christchurch, on the 2nd instant. Description : Supposed Scotch, about forty years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, medium build, dark complexion, dark hair beard whiskers and moustache turning grey; wore brown-leather leggings and grey-tweed cap with double peak. He purchased from Mr. May a pair of dark-grey heavy-twill tweed trousers, six pairs of lambs’-wool socks, two pairs of woollen drawers, two Crimean shirts, four yards of calico, and two swag-straps ; value £3 6s. 6d.; and received £2 13s. 6d. in cash, lie represented himself as a musterer from St. Helens Station, and indorsed the cheque “J. B. Gray.” He is believed to be identical with William G. Graham, alias Daniel Mann. (See Police Gazette, 1882, page 80.)

On the 23rd ultimo two large stones were maliciously placed on the railway-line at Oreti, Southland; the property of the Government.

JOhn Cragige is charged, on warrant issued by the Amberley Bench, with having, on the Ist instant, at Amberley, obtained goods and money, value £4 55., from W. S. Smith and Co., by means of a valueless cheque drawn on the National Bank, and purporting to be signed by John Frazar. Description : Scotch, about forty years of age, about 5 feet 9 inches high, dark complexion, dark hair, short dark beard and moustache, natural brown mark on back of one of hands; wore blueserge jacket, dark trousers, and black-felt hat. He indorsed the cheque “John Cragige,” which is believed to be a fictitious name. He is no doubt identical with the offender, William G. Graham, alias Daniel Mann.
