Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

William Mybrae is charged, on warrant issued by the Auckland Bench, with stealing, on the 4th instant, from the dwelling of James Longbottom, Albert Street, Auckland, a pair of opera-glasses, since recovered ; value PI 10s. Description : English, a tailor, fifty years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, medium build, grey beard, whiskers, and moustache; fond of drink. He is supposed to have gone to Hamilton, Otahuhu, Onehunga, or Papakura.

Burglariously entering the Golden Ago Hotel, Cromwell, the property of Charles McKenna. —A warrant has been issued for the arrest of J lines Hogan for this offence. Description : Irish, a labourer, thirty-three years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, sallow complexion, black hair, hazel eyes, scar on right temple. He was sentenced at Clyde on the 17th December, 1880, to twelve months’ labour for being illegally on premises. (See Police Gazette, 1881, page 181.) He has been traced towards Black’s.

Stolen on the 27th ultimo, from the dwelling of Thomas Bain, Kawarau Elat, Cromwell, a box containing £i and several games ; value over £5. The box has since been found, broken open, on the Nevis Road. James Hogan, referred to in the preceding paragraph, suspected.

On the morning of the 29th ultimo the Nevis Hotel, Nevis, the property of Thomas O’Connell, was burglariously entered, and two bottles of raspberry vinegar and some bottles of whiskey stolen. James Hogan suspected.

Stolen during the night of the 28th ultimo, from a bedroom in the Railway Hotel, Pleasant Point, Canterbury, an American silver lever hunting-watch, maker’s name and number not known, pin of bow missing; the property of Henry Powell; value £lO. Identification doubtful.

Between the 12th and 19th instant a hut at Left Hand Branch, Inangahua River, was broken into, and a very old double-barrel gun, left hammer new, stock broken at triggerguard, and tied with a piece of wire, value £4, and an old Terry’s single-barrel breech-loading rifle, screw of breech miss-

ing, value £5, stolen ; the property of Maria Green. Identifi able.

Stolen on the 15th instant, from the dwelling of Sawin Frank, Queen Street, Auckland, six £1 notes and £1 10s. in silver.

On the 16th instant the dwelling of the Rev. Alfred Owen Williams, Mount Eden Road, Auckland, was broken into, and the following stolen : £23 in gold and notes, a few shillings, a gold ring with two rubies and a diamond, a silver locket and chain, marked E.H.; a large silver war-medal for Battle of Copenhagen, presented to the Rev. H. Williams ; two gold brooches, five silver brooches, small size, six small silver forks with head-and-bust crest, six large silver forks with crest, a sugar-tongs, a silver spoon, marked M.C.; a silver pickle-fork with ivory handle, five large size plated forks, and six silver egg-spoons with crest; value about £3O. Identifiable, except money.

Stolen on the stli instant, from a bedroom in Mrs. Moore’s boarding-house, Hamilton West, a red-morocco purse, containing a £1 note, a half-sovereign, a few shillings in silver, and a brass shirt-stud ; the property of Matthew Walsh. Purse and stud identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, supposed to be a colonial, about thirty years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fair complexion, slightly pockpitted ; dressed in dark coat, light-tweed trousers, round quilted hat, and patentleather slippers. Supposed to have gone to Auckland.

Stolen on the 13th instant, from the Pier Hotel, Picton, a pint-and-a-half bottle of draught brandy, with part of capsule torn off; the property of Newth and Andrews ; value Vs. 6d.

Stolen on the 10th or llth instant, from the office of the jE 'vening Star newspaper, Bond Street, Dunedin, about 14s. in silver and ss. in copper; the property of George Bell.

Stolen on the 10th instant, from the bar of the Army and Navy Hotel, Queen Street, Auckland, a till containing a £1 note, a half-sovereign, between £1 10s. and £2 in silver, an albert guard, and two keys ; the property of Hugh R. Jones. The till and contents, except the money, have since been recovered.

Stolen on the 6th instant, from the shop of May Haines, Queen Street, Auckland, seven £1 notes, five sovereigns, four half-sovereigns, between £1 15s. and £2 in silver, a receipt for £8 from McArthur and Co., and a theatre dress-circle ticket. Receipt identifiable.

On the 9th instant the dwelling of John Biglow, Edinburgh Street, Ponsonby, Auckland, was broken into, and the following stolen : Two £1 notes, a sovereign, a half-sovereign, some silver and copper; a ladies’ double-cased gold Geneva watch, number and maker’s name not known, a ladies’ long gold chain, snake pattern, value £ls; a white-silk coat, a white-silk handkerchief, grape pattern, several small reels of coloured silk thi’ead, a brass necklace, broad-plait pattern, and a brown-silk watchguard ; value £1 15s. Identifiable, except money.

Stolen between the 9th and 16th instant, from the Club Hotel, Blenheim, three white blankets, three hair-brushes, a oomb, and a towel; the property of William Clark ; value £3. Blankets and towel identifiable.

Stolen between the 12th and 15th instant, from the dwelling of John Smith, Matheson’s Road, Phillipstown, a tin cashbox, about 12 by 6 inches, brown colour, no handle, containing a few letters and some bills, 2s. in copper, and two shoe-brushes; value 9s. 6d. Identifiable, except money. Suspicion attached to John Stavely, English, a sculleryman, about thirty-five years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, stout build, brown hair, thin light beard, whiskers, and moustache, very long features; wore light coat and trousers, and soft-felt hat; lame. Supposed to have gone to Christchurch.

On the 14tli instant the dwelling of George Tuck, Caledonian Road, St. Albans, near Christchurch, was broken into, and the following stolen : Three £L notes, an old silver open-faced Geneva watch, maker’s name and number not known, glass split and dial cracked, value 10s.; a gold brooch, about f inch long by inch wide, pearls round edge, two or three missing, value 10s.; lib. of t.ea, and about 15lb. of sugar; all value about £4 Bs. Watch and brooch identifiable. Suspicion attached to Mary Dell, Scotch, about forty years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, ruddy complexion, brown hair; wears brownwincey dress and plaid shawl. She lives in Kilmore Street, •Christchurch.

Stolen on the llth instant, from the tent of Thomas Quinlan, at the railway works, near Fairlie Creek, Canterbury, a post-office savings-bank book, issued at Timaru on the 27th ultimo, No. 2925, £l2 to credit; and a leather purse with three steel clasps and three pockets, containing £2 Bs. 6d. in notes and silver. Bank-book and purse identifiable.

Stolen between the 9th and 12th instant, from the dwelling of Richard Galway, Tai Tapu, near Christchurch, about fourteen £1 notes, and an old brown purse with brass clasp and three compartments, containing a £1 note and 2s. in silver. Purse identifiable. Suspicion attached to Henry Bebren, a German, twenty-six years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, stout build, brown hair, beard, whiskers, and moustache, bow-legged, fond of drink. He went towards Lincoln.
