Deserting Wives and Families, &c.

Benjamin Boswell is charged on warrant (Bench by whom issued not stated) with deserting his wife and five children, at Ashburton, since about August, 1880. Description: English, a labourer, about forty years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, medium build, slightly stooped, thick dark-brown beard, whiskers, and moustache ; addicted to drink. He wrote to kis wife from Timaru in April last.

Samuel Laird is charged, on warrant issued by the Waimate Bench, with deserting his wife and three children, at Waimate, since the end of September last. Description : Irish, a carpenter, twenty-seven years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, medium build, dark-brown beard, whiskers, and moustache, hazel eyes ; wore dark-tweed Mosgiel sac-coat, dark-tweed trousers and vest, hard black-felt hat, and new elastic-side boots. It is said that he is now clean-shared except moustache. He may assume the name of Wilkie. He was seen in Dunedin lately, where he has worked at his trade.

Henry Stanton, alias Stanley, is charged, on warrant issued by the Christchurch Bench, with disobeying a summons to appear at the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Christchurch, on the sth ultimo, to answer a cha ge of neglecting to support his illegitimate child by Mary Le Vavasour. Description: A native of Cornwall, a labourer, twenty-two years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, medium build, fresh complexion, blue eyes, fair hair and small fair moustache, smart active appearance; dressed in light-tweed suit. He left Lyttelton on the 7th September last by the barque “ Island City ” for Sydney.

plexion, lai’ge blue eyes, ratlier long visage; dressed in long black-cloth jacket -with large buttons and pockets at back, black dress with flounces, black-straw hat with brownish feather, double frill white lace round neck, plain gold ring, and elasticside boots. She left the child with a Mrs. McCaffry, Cargill Road, South Dunedin. A woman answering her description, who gave the name of Elizabeth Norris, called at the Benevolent Institution Office, Dunedin, on the 22nd September, and asked for assistance ; she had a child in her arms, and has not been heard of since.
