Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

Between the 14th and 21st ultimo the whare of William Manes, Upper Selwyn, was broken into, and the following stolen: A pair of elastic-side boots, size 7, about half worn ; a pair of light-tweed trousers and vest, size 5, nearly new; a white shirt with gilt studs in sleeves; a double-breasted oil-cloth coat, a hole at back sewn with black thread ; a dark-tweed vest, with moleskin back and sleeves, about half worn; a double-breasted dark-brown coat, stain from paint on one side ; and a pair of white Kaiapoi flannel drawers, patched at knees; value £4 4s. Identifiable.

On the morning of the 22nd ultimo the dwelling of John Valentine Smith, Opaki, near Masterton, was burglariously entered, and clothing and blankets, value between £ls and £2O, stolen. The offenders (supposed to be two men) were heard in the house, from which they escaped when an alarm was given, leaving the blankets and clothing tied in a sheet, and a mask outside the window through which they entered the house.

Stolen on the 17th ultimo, from the dwelling of Edward J. Scott, Beresford Street, Auckland, a half-crown, a white shirt, large size, marked E.S. or “E. Scott” below front; a large new sheet, and a dish towel; value 17s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 18th ultimo, from the dwelling of Sarah Rowe, Cross Street, Newton, Auckland, three white shirts, 3 yards of calico, and 4 yards of flannel; value £l. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 19th ultimo, from the dwelling of Charles Clark, Knikoura, Hawke’s Bay, a gold cameo brooch and earrings in morocco-leather case, the photograph of complainant and one of his sons in back of brooch ; value £B. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 12th ultimo, from the dwelling of Thomas Joseph Murphy, Devon Street, New Plymouth, an open-faced silver patent lever watch, maker’s name not known, supposed number 34035, very thick glass ; and a gold albert guard, about 18 inches long, twisted pattern, reddish bone cross attached ; value £lO. On the Bth ultimo the dwelling of Robert McLaughlin, at Grey town, was broken into, and a £5 note and 2s. 4d. in silver and copper stolen.

Stolen about the 30th September last, from the dwelling of Joseph Cornish Helmore, Fendaltown, near Christchurch, a gold necklet, small old-fashioned snake pattern, attached to which was a gold locket with three turquoise stones, two white cameo buds mounted in gold with three turquoises set in each bud, pendant; value £lO. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Norah Flynn, who was then a servant in the house. Description : Irish, twenty-three years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, stout build, fresh complexion, dark hair, good-looking She is at present living in Peterborough Street with a contractor, named Buckley.

Stolen between the 6th and Bth ultimo, from the office of George Charles Bowman, at Reefton, a cash-book, a ledger, and a share-register-book; the property of the Union Gold-Mining Company ; value about £5. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 17th or 18th ultimo, from the shop-door of Ernest Alfred Garnet, Cashel Street, Christchurch, five orangetree walking-sticks, round knobs, a tin ferrule on each, an indent in the knob of one, which is identifiable; value 12s. 6d.

Stolen dui-ing the night of the 11th ultimo, from a bedroom in the West Coast Hotel, Charleston, a £5 note and four £1 notes ; the property of Charles Bessant.

Stolen on the 12th September last, from the store of G. W. Owen and Co., Awhitu, Auckland, a day-book, a ledger, two memorandum-books, a petty-cash-book, and a money-order-book. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 16th ultimo, from the dwelling of David Stewart, Taupiri, Auckland, a £L note and lls. in silver.

On the morning of the 15th ultimo the hotel of William Hare, Main Road, South Dunedin, was broken into, but nothing was stolen.

Stolen on the 29tli September last, from the shop of Martha Crust, corner of Dowling and Smith Streets, Dunedin, a showglass, about 18 inches long by 3 inches in diameter, containing about 14 lb. of lollies; value 7s.

Stolen on the 20th ultimo, from the hut of Robert Stewart, Deborah Bay, near Port Chalmers, a small red-and-black bedrug, value £l, and 10s. in silver. Rug identifiable. Suspicion attached to John Gillies, a native of the colony, sixteen years of age, 5 feet high, medium build, fresh complexion, dark eyes, black curly hair; dressed in dark-tweed sac-coat, trousers, and vest, and grey-tweed hat. He is supposed to have gone to Dunedin or Green Island.

Stolen on the 23rd or 24th ultimo, from the person of George Smith, while drunk, at Christchurch, an American hunting lever watch, No. 1176060, small round-link silver albert guard attached, and a whitish-leather pocketbook containing a£s note and about nine £1 notes. Watch and pocketbook identifiable.

Stolen between 7 p.m. on the 22nd and 2 p.m. on the 23rd ultimo, from a desk in the Morning Herald office, Princes Street, Dunedin, about £6 in silver; the property of the Morning Herald Newspaper Company.
