Deserting Wives and Families, &c.
William Barnes is charged, on warrant issued by the Timaru Bench, with failing to pay 10s. per week for the support of his son, Joseph Barnes, at Southerton, near Timaru, since the 22nd February last. Description: English, a blacksmith, about thirty-five years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, slight build, dark complexion, blue eyes, thin features, dark hair, beard, whiskers, and moustache. Ho left Timaru by steamer in February last for Port Chalmers, accompanied by his son, about six years of age.
Eruera Turangapito is charged on warrant of commitment to gaol for one month’s imprisonment, issued by the Turakina Bench, in default of paying £5 fine and costs, for making use of obscene language at Wangaehu on the 2nd ultimo. Description : A Maori, about forty years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, stout build, well made, small w'hiskers and moustache, tattooed on face; dresses well; speaks English. Supposed to have gone to Taupo. He is also charged, on warrant issued by the Wanganui Bench, with making use of threatening language towards Fanny Davy on the 2nd ultimo at Wangaehu. He was summoned to appear at the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Turakina, on the 7th instant, to answer this charge, but he did not appear.
Hezekiah Mann is charged, on warrant issued by the Auckland Bench, with disobeying an order, since the 30th June last, to pay 7s. 6d. per week towards the support of his two children in the Auckland Industrial School. Description: Irish, a sawyer, age not stated, 5 feet 6 inches high, stout build, sandy beard, whiskers, and moustache. He is supposed to have gone to Whangarei or Northern Wairoa.
(See Police Gazette, 1881, page 144.) Thomas Lacy, charged on warrant with disobeying an order to pay £1 per week towards the support of his wife, has been arrested by the Port Albert Police.
Joseph Thomas is charged, on warrant issued by the Gisborne Bench, with deserting his wife and children at Gisborne since October last. Description : A Cornishman, a carpenter, about thirty years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, slight build, small features, fair complexion and hair, usually wears
small fair beard, but he is said to be clean-shaved now. In June last he was boarding at the Blue Posts, Victoria Street, Auckland.
Charles Davis is charged, on warrant issued by the Christchurch Bench, with deserting his wife at Ashburton since about January last. Description : A German, a labourer and sailor, forty years of age, about 6 feet high, stout build, fair complexion browned with the sun, long features, blue eyes, brown hair, large brown beard, whiskers, and moustache, active appearance, erect gait; speaks good English. He was seen iu Christchurch about three months ago.
Puke Puke is charged, on warrant issued by the Whakatane Bench, with using threatening language towards Constable Thomas Addis, at Whakatane, on the 9th July last. Description : A Maori, about twenty-seven year’s of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, heavy features, forbidding appearance, no tattoomarks on face. He was summoned for the offence, but did not appear.
