Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

During- the night of the 4th instant the store of W. Common and Co., at Gisborne, was broken into, and the following stolen: A cash-box, about 10 inches long by 6 inches wide and deep, containing £9 10s. in notes, gold, and silver; a cheque on the Bank of New Zealand, Gisborne, for £ll 95., drawn by Susan De Costra in favour of W. Common and Co. or beai’er; a cheque on the Bank of New Zealand, Gisborne, for £5 48., drawn by W. O. Skeat in favour of W. Common and Co. or bearer; a cheque on the Bank of New Zealand, Gisborne, for £l, drawn by W. Adair in favour of W. Common and Co. or bearer ; a cheque on the Bank of New Zealand, Gisborne, for £ls, drawn by S. C. Caulton in favour of W. Common and Co. or bearer ; a cheque on the Bank of New Zealand, Auckland, for £1 12s. Bd., drawn by Thornton, Smith, and Firth, indorsed “W. Common and Co.; ” a cheque on the Bank of New South Wales, Gisborne, for £2O, drawn by Henry Pollen in favour of Mr. Matthewson ; and sundry agreements, papers, &c. Cheques identifiable.

Supposed stolen during the night of the 6th instant, from the person of Kenata Tihore, at Gisborne, a yellow-leather pocket-book-purse, containing twelve £1 notes. Purse identifiable.

Stolen on the 11th or 12th instant, from the Commercial Hotel, Waverley, a drovers’ double-breasted black oilskin-coat, very large size, large bone buttons, buttons off right side, a large patch of glaze worn off at back; the property of William Holly ; value £1 15s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 10th instant, from the Wellington Hotel, Tuam Street, Christchurch, eight ivory bagatelle-balls (three white, three streaked white and brown, one dark blue, and one brownish with a piece chipped off) ; the property of Elizabeth Fuchs; value £1 10s. Identifiable.

The paget-coat, the property of John T. Oakden, stolen from the Royal Hotel, Milton, has been recovered, and traced to the possession of James Anderson, alias Hughes, arrested by Detective Alexander Henderson, Dunedin Police, and sentenced to two mouths’ labour.

Stolen on the 31st ultimo or Ist instant, from the shop of Charles Albert Gaze, at Wanganui, a silver brooch about I 3 inches long, pattern two diamonds overlapped, chased, plain edges, small oval place for photograph at back, the glass of which is broken ; and a pair of earrings to match brooch ; value £l. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 2nd or 3rd instant, from the Commercial Hotel, Palmerston North, about six dozen table and dessert knives with ivory handles, “Johnston, Western Works, warranted good,” stamped on blades; also a small flag with C. J. in centre ; the property of John Walkeley ; value £9. Identification doubtful. Suspicion attached to Charles Butler, who was employed as cook in the hotel. Description : Supposed English, a cook, about thirty-years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, slight build, fair complexion, high cheek-bones, prominent nose, small whiskers, and light moustache, chin shaved. He left Palmerston North on the morning of the 3rd instant by train for Wanganui.

Stolen on the 2nd instant, from the shop-door of Daniel Maher, at Lyttelton, a pair of light-tweed trousers and vest, and a dark check-pattern tweed vest; value £1 4s. fid. Identification doubtful.

On the morning of the 31st ultimo the dwelling of George Fletcher, Hagley Park Road, Rieearton, was broken into, ana a

hoys’ soft black-felt hat, size 6f, C.A.F. marked with ink on inside of leather band, value 65., stolen. Identifiable. The offender left an old brown-tweed hat in the house.

Stolen between the Ist and 4th instant, from the dwelling of Mary Collins, at South Dunedin, a silver lever hunting-watch, maker Barnes, number not known, a black spot on inside of case, silver albert chain attached ; value £5 10s. Watch identifiable. Suspicion attached to Charles Fibber, English, a cabdriver, thirty-four years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, stout build, dark complexion, brown whiskers and moustache turning grey ; wore dark trousers and vest, and black wide-awake hat.

On the 2nd instant the w r hare of Emma Timuera, at Omahu, Hawke’s Bay, was broken into, and the following stolen : Twenty £1 notes on the Bank of New Zealand, dated Wellington, Ist January, 1880, numbered from 1629901 to 1629921, or from 1629922 to 1629941. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 31st ultimo, from the dwelling of Edward Griggs, Lome Street, Auckland, a sovereign and three halfsovereigns.

Stolen on the 30th ultimo, from the bar of the New Caledonia Hotel, Symonds Street, Auckland, two £1 notes, two halfsovereigns, about £1 in silver, about 10s. in copper, an openface silver lever watch, maker Barnwell, Liverpool, No. 8361; an open-face silver Geneva keyless watch, maker’s name and number not known ; a pawn ticket for leather, a gentlemen’s gold ring with black stone with white mark through it, an imitation-diamond ring, and a number of letters, &c.; the property of John Smith ; value £lO. Identifiable except money.

Stealing shoes, &c., from the shop of James Rhodes, at Patea. —A pair of the kid shoes aud the prunella boots have been traced to the possession of Peter Jansen, arrested by Sergeant John Donovan, Patea Police, and sentenced to one month’s labour.

Stolen on the 31st ultimo, from the Papakau Hotel, Oamaru, a brown waterproof-coat, light-brown lining, small straps on cuffs and neck ; and a pair of brown-kid gloves ; the property of William Frederick Thirle ; value £3 9s. Goat identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man known as “ Bill,” Irish, a labourer, thirty-eight years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, medium build, dark complexion, dark hair, beard, whiskers, and moustache, mark under left eye; carried a large blue-blanket swag with calico tent on outside. Supposed to have gone to Waimate or Timaru.

Stolen on the sth or 6th instant, from the dwelling of Emma Ellis, Bristol Right-of-way, Cumberland Street, Dunedin, a pair of ladies’ plain-leather elastic-side boots, size 4, nearly new ; value Bs. 6d. Identifiable.

Stolen between the 2nd and 4th instant, from the person of George Beattie, while drunk, at Christchurch, an open-face gold lever watch, No. 18319, no maker’s name, a long-link plain gold chain with gold compass and square attached ; value £SO. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 11th ultimo, from the dwelling of Mary Shanks, Manchester Street North, Christchurch, a dark-brown morocco case lined with purple velvet, a gold stripe round edge, containing a pair of oblong gold earrings and a gold oval brooch with small gold neck-chain attached ; value £7. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Frederick Rose, a native of the colony, thirteen years of age, about 3 feet 10 inches high, stout build, fair hair and complexion ; wore dark-tweed coat and vest, coloured-moleskin trousers, and soft drab-felt hat.

Supposed stolen about the loth July last, from the kitchen of the College, Wellington, an open-face silver horizontal watch, No. 29086, maker’s name not known ; the property of Ellen Maher; value £3. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 22nd or 23rd ultimo, from the person of Peter Gardner Campbell, at Dunedin, a silver lever hunting-watch, makers G. and T. Young, Dunedin, No. 3001, value £BS a yellow-leather puree, 6 by 4 inches, liued with blue silk

“Andrew Campbell” written with ink on inside, and about £4 14s. Watch and purse identifiable. On the morning of the 23rd ultimo Campbell was found dead in Ross’s Right-of-way, off the Octagon. The works of the stolen watch were handed to the police on the Ist instant by John Deanner, a raggatherer, -who said he found them on the 28th ultimo among rubbish at the bottom of Stuart Street. Deanner and Annie Lockwood, with whom he lives, who offered the works for sale, were charged with stealing them, but were discharged.

Supposed stolen on the 13th or 14th instant, from the person of Lars Olsen, at Carterton, a £lO note, a £1 note, and about £1 in silver.

Stolen on the 9tli instant, from the Provincial Hotel, Upper Hutt, two grey-tweed single-breasted vests, fasten with hooks and eyes ; a pair of grey-tweed trousers, no buttons in front; a Crimean shirt, dark-check pattern, a hole in left breast; and three light-grey single blankets; the property of Charles E. Shortt; value £1 ss. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Harry Gavine, English, a bushman, twenty-seven years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, fair complexion, grey eyes, brown hair, beard, whiskers, and moustache; wore blue paget-coat, moleskin trousers, Crimean shirt, grey-tweed hat, and watertight boots; respectable appearance. Supposed to have gone to the Wairarapa.

Stolen on the Bth instant, from the office of Messrs. Chapman and Strode Princes Street, Dunedin, a black-twill waterproof coat, with plaid lining rather faded, L.M. marked on inside below collar; the property of Lorenzo Moore ; value £L. Identifiable. A Chinaman suspected.

Stolen between the 27th and 29th ultimo, from the store of Alfred Townsend, at Gladstone, Invercargill, a cross-cut saw and two bags of chaff; value 12s. 6d. Identification doubtful.

A man who gave his name as Richard Martin, which is believed to be fictitious, is charged with stealing, between the 20th and 27th ultimo, from the dwelling of George Hewlett, Tweed Street, Invercargill, an overcoat, since recovered ; value £5. Description : Supposed English, about forty-five years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, rather stout build, very thin fair beard ; wore brownisli-tweed coat. Identification doubtful.

Between the Ist and 31st ultimo the dwelling of Alfred Tourner, at Stratford, was broken into, and the following stolen: Three spades, one with long new ash-handle with only one rivet, one of the other two broken at back ; twelve iron wedges, two steel wedges, a Canadian axe with notch on top of handle, a 6-lb. axe, WGB on both sides of iron ; an old timber maule, rings battered ; two picks, one with part of point off; three billhooks, two with axe-handles ; a crowbar, a shingleknife, two mattocks, two hoes, an american patent potato-digger, two garden-rakes, a new adze, an old adze used for grubbing, several planes stamped AAW, a round camp-oven, about 13 inches in diameter, a slight crack in lid; about 150 lb. of bacon and hams, three large milk-dishes, a saw, an american hammer, half of claw broken off; a number of chisels, gouges, bradawls, and gimlets, a compass and square, all marked mi; and a quantity of clothing and other articles ; value £2O. Identifiable, except bacon, hams, and clothing.

Stolen on the 9th instant, from the person of Emily Sirncox, at Upokongaro, near WaDganui, a red morocco-leather purse with elastic band, containing a half-sovereign, 2s. 6d. in silver, and a cheque on the Bank of New Zealand, Wellington, No. 71576, dated about the sth instant, drawn by W. 11. Siincox, of Otaki, in favour of E. Simcox or bearer. Purse and cheque identifiable. Maoris suspected.
