Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

Stealing- money from the dwelling of Andrew Neilson, at Norfolk Road, near Inglewood.—Thomas Thompson, and not James Thompson, is believed to be the offender’s correct name. The warrant has now been issued for his arrest in that name. He is identical with Thomas Thompson, charged on warrant with embezzling £l, at Normanby, the money of his employer, William Lilly England.

A MAN, name unknown, is charged with stealing, about 10.30 p.m. on the 9th instant, in the shop of Reuben Hart, George Street, Dunedin, four hair watch-chains, sixteen “ gold-of-the-period” albert chains, a “ gold-of-the-period ” neck-chain, a cigar-holder, a scent-bottle, and a bottle of perfume, since recovered ; value £3. Description : About twenty years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark thin features; wore dark paget-coat and black wideawake hat. Identification doubtful. He was caught stealing the goods in the shop by Mrs. Hart.

On the 25th ultimo the dwelling of Matthew Notman, Pollock’s Settlement, Waiuku, Auckland, was broken into, and the following stolen : A gentleman’s open-face gold lever watch, “M. C. Notman, 1860,” engraved on back; a long gold chain, small-link diamond pattern (diamond on each link) ; a gold ring, with scotch thistle, band has been broken and soldered ; an open-face silver Geneva watch, number not known ; a long silver chain, long-link pattern, connected by two small links; a gold scarf pin, with blue stones, one or two stones missing ; a five-chambered muzzle-loading revolver, a double-barrel pistol with one hammer, two common brass taps, and several foreign coins; value £4O. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Richard and James Given, settlers at Pollock’s Settlement. Description : Richard is Irish, about thirty years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, stout build, dark beard, whiskers and moustache, slovenly appearance. James is Irish, about twenty-fours of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, medium build, small fair whiskers and moustache, chin shaved, smart active appearance.

Mks. F. Valentine is charged, on warrant issued by the Oamaru Bench, with stealing, on the 17th instant, from a dwelling at Oamaru, a Singer’s sewing-machine, four hairbottomed chairs, a chiffonnier, a washstand, a toilet table, seven folio illustrated volumes of Dickens’s works, and other goods ; the property of the Rev. Father Coleman ; value £25. Identifiable. Description: Supposed Irish, thirty-five years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, medium build, florid complexion, lightbrown hair. She is supposed to be identical with the wife of a tailor named McCluskey, who is believed to be residing in Christchurch. She is supposed to have gone to Christchurch or Timaru.

James Lindsay, charged on warrant with stealing a swag, Ac., the property of Alexander Ogilvie Lee, has been arrested by Constable Thomas Livingstone, Duntroon Police, and discharged, as the prosecutor had left the colony.

Stolen on the 17th instant, from the dwelling of John Dick, Octagon, Dunedin, a ladies’ white-fur muff, and a ladies’ small brown hand-bag containing about £1 18s. in silver; the property of Elizabeth Mascal; value £2 10s. Bag and muff identifiable.

Stolen between the Ist January last and the 18th instant, from the warehouse of Joseph Nathan, at Wellington, six billiard halls, two red and four white, small size (2 inches across) ; value £2 10s.

Stolen on the 6th instant, from the shop of Edward Kemp McLiskey, Dee Street, Invercargill, a pair of men’s new elasticside boots, size 10, sprigs in soles, heel-plates; value £1 ss. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 18t.h instant, from the shop-door of Ernest Do, George Street, Dunedin, about 12 yards of red-cardinal satin-cloth ; value 18s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 16th instant, from the shop-window of William Turnbull, at Lawrence, a double-breasted blue-pilot-cloth coat, lined with black plush, four black-horn buttons on each side,- value £1 Bs.

During the night of the 12th instant the dwelling of William Gibson Inman, at Riccarton, was burglariously entered, and the following Btolen : A cash-box containing papers and photographs, a money-box containing 2s. or 3s. in copper, a loaf of bread, and a piece of cake. The cash-box and the money-box with contents, except the coppers, have since been recovered ; they were found broken open in a paddock near Mr. Inman’s.

Stolen on the 15th instant, from the shop of Berry Cass, Colombo Street, Christchurch, two ladies’ black-cloth jackets trimmed with black satin and seaweed fringe, outside of cloth plain, the inside rough, black-silk buttons ; value £1 14s. Identification doubtful.

During the night of the sth instant, the office of Messrs. Kincaid and McQueen, Vulcan Foundry, King Street, Dunedin, was broken into, and an attempt made to break open a safe in the office with a large hammer and some chisels, which were taken from the workshop.

During the night of the 4th instant the shop of John Thomas Roughton, South Dunedin, was broken into, and a cash-box in the office burst open, sixpence in silver, sevenpence in coppex 1 , and two door-keys stolen.

Between 8 and 10 a.m. on the 4th instant the dwelling of John Boyce, at Ashley, was broken into, and a £1 note, ten balf-soyereigns, and s<.ven shillings in silver, stolen. Suspicion attached to a youth, name unknown, who was seen running up the railway-line from the direction of the house. Description: About eighteen or twenty years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, medium build, no hair on face, large mouth and lips; wore dark-tweed coat turning green, tweed trousers darker than coat, soft black-felt hat, large white muffler with dark spots, and nearly-new lace-up boots. He left Sefton by noon train on the 4th instant for Christchurch.

Stolen between the 6th and 11th instant, from the dwelling of Daniel B own, Wickliff Bay, Portobello, a half-sovereign £3 10s. in silver, and a black leather pocketbook with thre9 compartments and elastic band. Pocketbook identifiable.

Stolen on the 23rd July last, from the Kakaramea Hotel, Kakaramea, a rug with black, red, and yellow stripes; the property of James O’Sullivan; value 18s. Identification doubtful.

Stolen on the 3rd instant, from the dwelling of William Mulloy, at Kihikihi, Waikato, a small leather pocketbook containing a £5 note and a deposit-receipt for £SO on the Bank of New Zealand. Pocketbook and deposit-receipt identifiable. Suspicion attached to John Hunter, Scotch, a labourer, about fifty-six years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, stout build, grey hair and beard; wore dirty tweed coat and vest, white moleskin trousers, and old grey hat; swaggering gait; fond of drink. He left Te Awamutu on the 4th instant for Hamilton.

Stolen between the 18th and 23rd July last, from the dwelling of Neil Bollersleve, at German Gully, near Ross, a silver Geneva watch, number and makei’’s name not known, “ Anker, 15 rubies,” written on back of inside case; a gold signet ring with compass and square, and a set of common shirtstuds ; value £5 12s. Watch and ring identifiable.

Stolen on the 12th instant, from the shop of Thomas Austin, Victoria Street, Christchurch, a child’s new scarlet pelisse, trimmed with black velvet; value £1 4s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 16tli instant, from the shop of Nicholas English, Willis Street, Wellington, a single-breasted blue diagonal walking-coat, four buttons on front, small ticket-pocket with flap on right side, outside left breast-pocket, two back skirt-pockets, back lined with black quilted italian, about size 5, bound with worsted braid ; value £4. Identifiable.

During the night of the 9th instant the dwelling of the Rev. Ilenry Glasson, at Fendaltown, near Christchurch, was bi’oken into, and the following stolen: A small common grey-doeskin purse with one compartment, containing a half-sovereign, about £2 12s. in silver, two penny postage-stamps, and a penny receipt-stamp; nine 2-lb. loaves of bread. Purse identifiable.

Stolen between the Ist and sth instant, from the tent of Luke Taylor, at Waikouaiti River, a single-barrel breechloading kangaroo gun, very old fashion j value £1 ss. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Nicholas Harven, an Italian, a miner and labourer, thirty-two years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, medium build, fair hair, beard, and moustache, cheeks shaved.

Stolen on the 10th instant, from the shop of William Maine, Colombo Street, Christchurch, a pair of men’s lace-up boots with heel tips ; value 18s. 6d.
