Deserting Wives and Families, &c.

Bichard Searl, alias Jack Stook, alias John Lock, alias Tom Jenkins, charged on warrant with neglecting to support his three children, has been arrested by Constable John Maher, Bangiora Police, and remanded to Lyttelton.

Bichard Serle, charged on warrant of commitment to gaol for one month’s labour, in default of paying £6 10s., due for the maintenance of his wife and family, has been arrested by Constable John Maher, Bangiora Police.
A warrant of distress has been issued by the Christchurch Bench against Arthur Wellington Palmer, alias Arthur Palmer, for disobeying an order to pay £1 10s. per week towards the support of his wife and family at Christchurch. Description : English, a woolsorter, forty-five years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, dark complexion, blue eyes, brown hair, beai'd, whiskers, and moustache, bald on top of head. He is identical with Arthur Palmer. (See Police Gazette, 1880, pages 134 and 208.) On the 10th January last he was £lO 13s. in avrear.
John Tiller is charged, on warrant issued by the Wellington Bench, with disobeying an order to pay £1 per week towards the support of his four children in the Burnham Industrial School. Description: English, a carpenter, thirtyone years of age, 5 feet 11£ inches high, medium build, sandy complexion, blue eyes, auburn hair and goatee. (See Police Gazette, 1880, page 176.) He is supposed to be at Timaru or Oamaru.
Edward Bees and John Johnson escaped from the Industrial School at Caversham on the 24th ultimo. Description: Bees is fourteen years of age, 5 feet high, fair complexion and hair; dressed in grey-tweed coat, dark check trousers, soft blackfelt hat spotted with paint, and large half-wellington boots. Johnson is thirteen years of age, 5 feet high, dark complexion, dark-brown hair, scar over left eye; dressed in grey-tweed coat, coloured-moleskin trousers, and soft black-felt hat.
Louis Francis Dunn is charged, on warrant issued by the Napier Bench, with deserting his wife at Waipawa since the 2nd December, 1878. Description: A native of London, a blacksmith, thirty-five years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, stout build, broad shoulders, dark complexion, dark hair, whiskers, and moustache, chin generally shaved. He was seen in Christchurch about a year ago.
A female child, about two months old, was found abandoned on the morning of the 18th ultimo in the deadhouse of the hospital at New Plymouth. The child was fairly clothed, looked healthy and well nourished. A parcel of clothing, which had been worn, was found near the child.
Edward Valentine Westerby is charged, on warrant issued by the Wellington Bench, with deserting his wife at Wellington since the 2nd ultimo. Description : A native of London, a shipwright, twenty-five years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, slight build, fair complexion, sharp features, red hair and moustache; when last seen wore blue pilot-cloth monkey-jacket, brown-moleskin trousers, round blue scotch cap, and blucher boots.
Henry William Dutton is charged, on warrant issued by the Wairaate Bench, with deserting his wife at Waimate since the 29th ultimo. Description : A barman and waiter (native country not stated), twenty-six years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, slight build, dark complexion, dark curly hair,
small dark moustache and beard, little or no whiskers, smart active appearance ; wore dark suit, white shirt with stand-up collar, black billycock hat, and light boots. He left Waiinate on the 29th ultimo for Oamaru, supposed with the intention of leaving the colony.
George William Price is charged, on warrant issued by the Christchurch Bench, with neglecting to provide his wife with adequate means of support at Christchurch since the 13th ultimo. Description: A native of London, a waiter and bottler, thirty-two years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, slight build, thin face, dark complexion, black hair, and small black moustache ; wore dark-tweed suit and soft blaek-felt hat. (See Police Gazette, 1879, page 177.) He is supposed to be at Governor’s Bay, Akaroa, or Southbridge, soliciting orders at hotels, &c., for Schwartz’s Australian wines.
