Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

A nor, name unknown, is charged with stealing, on the 28th ultimo, from a till in the shop of Fung Name, High Street, Christchurch, about 10s. in silver and copper. Description: About fourteen years of age, about 4 feet high, light complexion, fair hair; dressed in light-tweed suit and white-straw hat with blue ribbon. Identifiable.

On the Ist instant the dwelling of William Storer, at West Eyreton, Canterbury, was broken into, and the following stolen: A silver lever hunting watch, No. 63647, “Peterson and Co.” on dial; value £6. Stolen on the 26th ultimo, from the person of Joseph Winter, at Aratapu, Auckland, a silver lever hunting watch, No. 335 or 353, “Bussell and Sons, makers, London and Liverpool,” on dial; a gold albert chain, long-link pattern, connected by small twisted links, a gold band round each end of links, a small dark spot near the end of cross-bar; value £ls. Stolen about the 23rd ultimo, from a bedroom in the New Zealander Hoi el, Manners Street, Wellington, a nearly-new pair of men’s elastic-side boots, size 7, pegged, high-heels, heel rand toe plates, “ E. Hoskins ” stamped on soles ; the property <£>f John Hartigan ; value £1 ss. Identifiable.

Stolen during the night of the 27th ultimo, from Brett and Johnston’s Hotel, Nornmnby, a double-cased silver lever hunting watch, makers Bussell and Sons, London, No. 6355, E.J.B. faintly inscribed with a penknife on the outside and inside of back case ; and a silver albert chain with patent spring, square links about f inch long with two small round links between, connected by rope-patlern bars, one of the caps of bar at one end of chain broken off and loading of lead exposed; the property of Edward James Blake; value £ll 10s. Stolen on the 31st ultimo, from the person of Walter Burrell, at Ashburton, a cheque for £lO, drawn by Donald Potts in favour of Walter Burrell, four £1 notes, and a pawn ticket issued by H. 11. Davis, Christchurch, for 18 dvvt. 16 gr. of gold ; cheque and ticket identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man known as George, the Jew, a Tasmanian, about fortyfive or fifty years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, stout square build, dark whiskers.

Stolen on the Ist inslant, from the dining-room of the Alliance Hotel, Oamaru, a silver lever hunting watch, maker Ehrardt, No. 41718, value £5; four £1 notes, and one pound in silver ; the property of John Melnery. Watch identifiable.

Stolen between 10 aud 11 a.m. on the 6th instant, from the dwelling of Michael Britt, Ware Pori Street, Wellington, a pair of white-cotton socks, a pair of military socks, a new flannel undershirt, an old meerschaum pipe, crooked stem and amber mouthpiece, a hole in bottom of bowl; a pound of tobacco, tea, sugar, and a piece of bacon ; value £1 103. Socks, flannel, and pipe identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, who was seen coming from the house with a bundle under his arm. Description: Looked like a labourer, about thirtyfive years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, medium build, fair complexion, sandy hair, beard, whiskers, and moustache ; dressed in light-coloured trousers and vest, white shirt, and Scotch cap with peak, no coat. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 6th instant, from the shop-window of Graves and Fleming, Manners Street, Wellington, a blue diagonal-cloth paget coat with black-silk-covercd buttons, back lined with black Italian, sleeves lined with white-twill cotton, blue-striped fernpattern, Goldberg Bros, and Co. and Australian coat-of-arms stamped on inside of sleeves, an inside right-breast and two outside pockets ; value £2 4s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the sth instant, from a till in the store of Frederick Bills, at Porirua, two pounds in silver and five shillings in, copper.

Stolen on the 29th or 30th ultimo, from the dwelling of Frank Haukey, at Clydesvalc Station, Otago, a £lO note, a £5 note, and £1 in notes. James Keenan, a boy employed on the station, suspected.

Stolen on the 25th ultimo, from a bedroom in the Duke of Marlborough Hotel, Hassell, a purse containing eight £1 notes, supposed on the Bank of New Zealand, a Christmas card, and a valentine; the property of John Gardiner. Purse, card, and valentine were subsequently found by the police in the water-closet of the hotel.

On the morning of the Ist instant the store of Charles Bell, at Churchill, Waikato, was broken into, and the following stolen: About twelve single blankets, twelve tweed coats, twelve pairs of drill trousers, twelve flannel under-shirts, twenty-four cotton shirts, twenty-four pairs of tweed trousers, a piece of white flannel, a piece of red flannel, two pieces of white calico, twelve pairs of boots, four or five pieces of print, twelve tweed vests, two bags of loaf-bread, 301 b. of tobacco, eighteen dozen boxes of matches, four or five 50-lb. bags of flour, a bag of sugar, a number of pocket-knives, a few tomahawks, 53 yards of black alpaca, four or five spades, about seventy-two twopenny postage-stamps, and about thirty or forty penny duty-stamps; value about £9O. Identification doubtful. Maoris suspected.

Between the Ist October last and the 25th ultimo the dwelling of Nina McKenzie, Ileriot Row, Dunedin, was broken into, and the following stolen: A large gold-mounted oval cameo brooch, St. George and the dragon pattern; a pair of gold-mounted cameo ear-rings, female’s-head pattern ; a ladies’ gold neck-chain, small round-link pattern; a gentlemen’s gold albert guard, long-link pattern; a ladies’ gold ring with emerald in centre and small diamond on each side, a ladies’ gold ring with sapphire in centre and pearl on each side, and a ladies’ gold ring with five pearls ; value £25. Identifiable.

Stolen during the night of the 31st ultimo, from the bedroom of Thomas Broderick, Devon Street, New Plymouth, nine sovereigns. Suspicion attached to James Thompson, who was the only person who slept in the room with complainant. Description : A German, about tw r enty-four years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, fair hair and complexion, small fair moustache and goatee; wore blue coat, grey-tweed trousers and vest, black billycock hat, and elastic-side boots.

Stolen on the 31st ultimo, in the Union Hotel, Willis Street, Wellington, a silver lever hunting watch, maker’s name Cootes and Co., Christchurch, No. 48868; the property of Henry Williams; value £ll 10s. Identifiable.
