Promotion.
Third-class Sergeant Arthur McKeown, No. 352, to be Firstclass Sergeant, for the zeal and ability displayed by him in securing the arrest of the murderer Tuhi, since sentenced to death and executed. Tns sum of £5 each has been awarded from tho Reward Fund to Constables James Connell, No. 1034; Waters Coleman, No. 1689; John Hickey, No. 840 ; Thomas Knowles, No. 1549; William McCarthy, No. 1509; Denis Murphy, No. 846 ; John Shearman, No. 1043; and George Taylor, No. 1487, Opunake Reserve Force, in recognition of their active and creditable conduct in the arrest, &c., of Tuhi, sentenced to death at the last sittings of the Supreme Court at Wellington, for murder.
The sum of £3 has been awarded from the Reward Fund to Constable Burnett, Green Island Police, in recognition of liis promptness in arresting John Smith, alias Thomas Hardy, who on the 18th ultimo escaped from the prison gang at the Dunedin Botanical Gardens.
The sum of £5 and £3 respectively has been awarded from the Reward Fund to Constable Robert Neill and Sergeant David Ramsay, Ashburton and Waimate Police, in recognition of the zeal and efficiency shown by them in the detection and prosecution of George Sunnaway, of Waimate, fined £4O on two charges of sly grog-selling.
The sum of £5 each has been awarded by John Gordon to Sergeant Adam Bissett and Detective Maurice Sullivan, Wanganui Police, in recognition of their services in the recovery of £145 stolen from him, and the arrest of Mary Osbourne, sentenced at the last sittings of the Supreme Court at Wanganui to twelve months’ labour for stealing the money, and Clara Harrison, sentenced to six months’ labour for receiving it.
The sum of £1 has been awarded by Mr. W. S. Rainie to Constable George Lawrie, Wellington Police, in recognition of
his services and assistance in putting a gentleman on board the steamer “ Rotomahana,” who was likely to lose his passage.
During the night of the 6th instant, at Norwich Quay, Lyttelton, a barbers’ pole, value £2, was maliciously wrenched off the front of George Ayers’s shop and broken.
